Preparation and electrical characterization of (PVC + KBrO3) polymer electrolytes for solid state battery applications

This paper presents results of studies on dc electrical conductivity and transference number measurements on potassium bromate (KBrO₃) complexed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films prepared by solution cast technique. Temperature dependence of dc electrical conductivity and transference number data indicated the dominance of ion type charge transport in these specimens. The magnitude of conductivity increased with increase in concentration of the salt and temperature. Using this (PVC + KBrO₃) electrolyte, solid-state electrochemical cells were fabricated, and their discharge profiles were studied under a constant load of 100 kΩ. Several cell profiles such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current, power density, and energy density associated with these cells were evaluated and were reported. The features of complexation of the electrolytes were studied by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of finite capacity discrete-time <Emphasis Type="Italic">GI</Emphasis>/<Emphasis Type="Italic">Geo</Emphasis>/1 queueing system with multiple vacations

This paper investigates a discrete-time single-server finite-buffer queueing system with multiple vacations in which arrivals occur according to a discrete-time renewal process. Service and vacation times are mutually independent and geometrically distributed. We obtain steady-state system length distributions at prearrival, arbitrary and outside observer's observation epochs under the late arrival system with delayed access and early arrival system. The analysis of actual waiting-time for both the systems has also been carried out. The model has potential application in high-speed computer network, digital communication systems and other related areas.     

Finite element computations of two-dimensional arterial flow in the presence of a transverse magnetic field

A finite element solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for steady flow under the magnetic effect through a double-branched two-dimensional section of a three-dimensional model of the canine aorta is discussed. The numerical scheme involves transforming the physical co-ordinates to a curvilinear boundary-fitted co-ordinate system. The shear stress at the wall is calculated for a Reynolds number of 1000 with the branch-to-main aortic flow rate ratio as a parameter. The results are compared with earlier works involving experimental data and found to be in reasonable qualitative agreement. The steady flow, shear stress and branch flow under the effect of a magnetic field have been discussed in detail.     

Enantiomeric synthesis of the key synthon of the oviposition-deterring pheromone of Rhagoletis cerasi L

A convenient and enantioselective synthesis of ethyl (8RS, 15R)-8-acetoxy-15-hydroxyhexadecanoate15 via a chemoenzymatic approach has been described. The salient features of the synthesis were operational simplicity, use of easily accessible materials, and excellent enantiocontrol via lipase catalyzed acetylation of 2-alkanol.     

Polyadic codes of prime power length

Polyadic codes constitute a special class of cyclic codes and are generalizations of quadratic residue codes, duadic codes, triadic codes, m-adic residue codes and split group codes, which have good error-correcting properties. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of polyadic codes of prime power length. Examples of some good codes arising from the family of polyadic codes of prime power length are also given.     

Optimization of lantadenes isolation and preparation of 22 β-hydroxyoleanonic acid

The lantadenes fraction from Lantana camara was isolated and transformed to the medicinally important intermediate 22β-hydroxyoleanonic acid. The compound was studied for hepatotoxicity using lantadene A as standard and found to be nontoxic. Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 4, pp. 357–358, July–August, 2006.     

On solving energy-dependent partitioned eigenvalue problem by genetic algorithm: The case of real symmetric Hamiltonian matrices

An energy-dependent partitioning scheme is explored for extracting a small number of eigenvalues of a real symmetric matrix with the help of genetic algorithm. The proposed method is tested with matrices of different sizes (30 × 30 to 1000 × 1000). Comparison is made with Löwdin’s strategy for solving the problem. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the GA-based method are analyzed     

Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides catalyzed by nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide

Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with epoxides to afford 3-alkyl indole derivatives at room temperature with moderate to good yields and high regioselectivity using nanocrystalline titanium(IV) oxide catalyst is described.     

Construction of spiro[5.5]undecanes containing a quaternary carbon atom adjacent to a spirocentre via an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and RCM reaction sequence. Total syntheses of (±)-α-chamigrene, (±)-β-chamigrene and (±)-laurencenone C

Starting from cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, a combination of an Ireland ester Claisen rearrangement and RCM reactions was exploited for an efficient construction of spiro[5.5]undecanes containing a quaternary carbon atom adjacent to the spirocentre and the methodology was extended to complete total syntheses of three chamigrenes.
