A tall space with a small bottom

We introduce a general method of constructing locally compact scattered spaces from certain families of sets and then, with the help of this method, we prove that if , then there is such a space of height with only many isolated points. This implies that there is a locally compact scattered space of height with isolated points in ZFC, solving an old problem of the first author.

     

Changes in the Solubility of β-Cyclodextrin on Complex Formation: Guest Enforced Solubility of β-Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes

The most common native host molecule, -cyclodextrin (cycloheptaamylose) is able toform inclusion complexes with a large variety of guestmolecules (or ions) of different size and shape. Theproperties of the included guest molecule are highlyinfluenced by the host-guest interaction, and thepractical usefulness of -cyclodextrin isdependent on these effects. These changes are mainlyinvestigated from the point of view of the guest andto a lesser extent from that of the host. In spite ofthis, the kind of guests and that of the host-guestinteractions during the formation of the inclusioncomplex seem to influence the properties of thehydrophilic domain of -cyclodextrin (i.e. thatof the supramolecule itself), too, and this effect canbe well demonstrated by the change of solubility ofdifferent -cyclodextrin inclusion complexes.This change can be best correlated with the solubilityof the guest as if the guest enforced its solubilityon the supramolecule.     

Petrov Types of Slowly Rotating Fluid Balls

Circularly rotating axisymmetric perfect fluid space-times are investigated to second order in the small angular velocity. The conditions of various special Petrov types are solved in a comoving tetrad formalism. A number of theorems are stated on the possible Petrov types of various fluid models. It is shown that Petrov type II solutions must reduce to the de Sitter spacetime in the static limit. Two space-times with a physically satisfactory energy-momentum tensor are investigated in detail. For the rotating incompressible fluid, it is proven that the Petrov type cannot be D. The equation of the rotation function can be solved for the Tolman type IV fluid in terms of quadratures. It is also shown that the rotating version of the Tolman IV space-time cannot be Petrov type D.
