Organic nanocrystals of the resorcinarene hexamer via sonochemistry: evidence of reversed crystal growth involving hollow morphologies

Nano- and micrometer-scale crystals of a self-assembled hexamer have been synthesized via sonochemistry. The application of ultrasonic irradiation afforded hollow rhombic-dodecahedral crystals of the C-methylcalix[4]resorcinarene hexamer. The formation of the hollow crystals is attributed to a reversed crystal growth mechanism heretofore described only in the synthesis of inorganic-based materials.     

Supramolecular chemistry under mechanochemical conditions: a small molecule template generated and integrated into a molecular-to-supramolecular and back-to-molecular cascade reaction

We describe the integration of a small-molecule hydrogen-bond-donor template into a cascade reaction that is comprised of a combination of molecular and supramolecular events. The cascade is performed mechanochemically and in the presence of μL amounts of water. The small-molecule template is generated (molecular) using water-assisted vortex grinding and is then used to assemble an alkene (supramolecular) to undergo an intermolecular [2 + 2] photodimerization reaction (molecular). The chemical cascade results in a cyclobutane photoproduct that we show serves as a building block of a hydrogen-bonded network with a topology that conforms to T-silica. Remarkably, the molecular–supramolecular–molecular chemical cascade occurs stepwise and entirely regioselectively within the continuous mechanochemical conditions employed.

Mechanochemistry is applied to molecular and supramolecular chemistry to support a template-directed photochemical reaction.     

Halogen-Bond Mediated [2+2] Photodimerizations: À la Carte Access to Unsymmetrical Cyclobutanes in the Solid State

The ditopic halogen-bond (X-bond) donors 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-di-I-tFb, respectively) form binary cocrystals with the unsymmetrical ditopic X-bond acceptor trans-1-(2-pyridyl)-2-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (2,4-bpe). The components of each cocrystal (1,2-di-I-tFb)·(2,4-bpe), (1,3-di-I-tFb)·(2,4-bpe), and (1,4-di-I-tFb)·(2,4-bpe) assemble via N···I X-bonds. For (1,2-di-I-tFb)·(2,4-bpe) and (1,3-di-I-tFb)·(2,4-bpe), the X-bond donor supports the C=C bonds of 2,4-bpe to undergo a topochemical [2+2] photodimerization in the solid state: UV-irradiation of each solid resulted in stereospecific, regiospecific, and quantitative photodimerization of 2,4-bpe to the corresponding head-to-tail (ht) or head-to-head (hh) cyclobutane photoproduct, respectively.     

Domination numbers of planar graphs

The problem of determining the domination number of a graph is a well known NP-hard problem, even when restricted to planar graphs. By adding a further restriction on the diameter of the graph, we prove that planar graphs with diameter two and three have bounded domination numbers. This implies that the domination number of such a graph can be determined in polynomial time. We also give examples of planar graphs of diameter four, and nonplanar graphs of diameter two, having arbitrarily large domination numbers. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Effects of exposure to seismic airgun use on hearing of three fish species

Seismic airguns produce considerable amounts of acoustic energy that have the potential to affect marine life. This study investigates the effects of exposure to a 730 in.3 airgun array on hearing of three fish species in the Mackenzie River Delta, the northern pike (Esox lucius), broad whitefish (Coregonus nasus), and lake chub (Couesius plumbeus). Fish were placed in cages in the 1.9 m of water and exposed to five or 20 airgun shots, while controls were placed in the same cage but without airgun exposure. Hearing in both exposed and control fish were then tested using the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Threshold shifts were found for exposed fish as compared to controls in the northern pike and lake chub, with recovery within 24 hours of exposure, while there was no threshold shift in the broad whitefish. It is concluded that these three species are not likely to be substantially impacted by exposure to an airgun array used in a river seismic survey. Care must be taken, however, in extrapolation to other species and to fishes exposed to airguns in deeper water or where the animals are exposed to a larger number of airgun shots over a longer period of time.     

Interactions of Pyrene-Labeled Silica Particles

Silica spheres were prepared by the St?ber method, and the method of labeling with pyrene, using aminopropylysilane as the linking agent, was optimized. Excimers between particles were formed when high concentrations of label were used. Both surfactant and polyelectrolyte addition were able to cause floc formation when added to suspensions of the silica, but only the surfactant changed the I(1)/I(3) ratio and diminished excimer formation.
