Naphthyl azomesogens with lateral chloro groups

A homologous series of azomesogens, 2″-[4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-2-chlorophenylazo] naphthalenes, with lateral chloro groups was synthesised. All the homologues synthesized exhibit enantiotropic nematic mesophase. The mesomorphic properties of the present series are compared with other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of lateral chloro group and its position on mesomorphism This paper was presented at the 10th National Conference on Liquid Crystals held at Bangalore, India during 9–11 October 2003.     

Coset extensions of <Emphasis Type=”Italic”>S</Emphasis>-sets

Summary Three weak variants of compactness which lie strictly between compactness and quasicompactness, are introduced. Their basic properties are studied. The interplay with mapping and their direct and inverse preservation under mappings are investigated. In the process three decompositions of compactness are observed.     

Inverse Problem for a Mathematical Model of Adsorption Dynamics

A mixed problem is considered for a system of partial differential equations modeling the process of adsorption dynamics. An existence and uniqueness theorem is proved for this problem, and the solution properties are investigated. The inverse problem is posed, involving the determination of the system coefficient given additional information about the solution. Search for a reliable methodology for PSD determination based on a combined molecular simulation-regularization-experimental approach: The case of PHTS materials

We present here a methodology for searching a robust pore size distribution (PSD) for adsorbent materials. The method is based on a combination of individual adsorption isotherms, obtained from Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations, a regularization procedure to invert the adsorption integral equation (Tikhonov regularization solved by singular value decomposition), and the needed experimental adsorption isotherm. The selection of several parameters from the available choices to start the procedure are discussed here: the size of the kernel (number of individual pores and number of experimental adsorption points to be included), the fulfillment of the Discrete Picard condition, and the L-curve criteria, all leading to find a reliable and robust PSD. The procedure is applied to plugged hexagonal templated silicas (PHTS), synthesized, and characterized in our laboratory.
