Glass transitions in hydrogen-bonded polymer complexes

Mutual precipitates of poly (N, N-dimethyl acrylamide) and poly (4-hydroxystyrene) were collected from dioxane, methanol, or acetone. The glass transition (T_g) temperatures of the precipitates are higher than the weight-average values. Clear films cast from dimethylformamide solutions have lower T_g values. Complexation also occurred between poly (ethyl oxazoline) and poly (4-hydroxystyrene) in dioxane and between poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) and poly (4-hydroxystyrene) in methanol. Again, the glass transition temperatures of the precipitates are higher than the values for the blend films. The ΔC_p values associated with the glass transitions of the complexes are smaller than those of the blends having the same compositions. Negative excess heat capacities of mixing have been observed for several precipitates.     

Equivalence of u–p and ζ–ψ formulations of the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations

This paper deals with the non-stationary incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for two-dimensional flows expressed in terms of the velocity and pressure and of the vorticity and streamfunction. The equivalence of the two formulations is demonstrated, both formally and rigorously, by virtue of a condition of compatibility between the boundary and initial values of the normal component of velocity. This condition is shown to be the only compatibility condition necessary to allow for solutions of a minimal regularity, namely H¹ for the velocity, as in most current numerical schemes relying on spatial discretizations of local type.     

A multigrid method for predicting periodically fully developed flow

The use of multigrid methods in complex fluid flow problems is still under development. In this paper a full multigrid procedure has been incorporated in a finite volume solution for predicting fully developed fluid flow in a streamwise periodic geometry. Steady computations in two-dimensional body fitted co-ordinates have shown considerable savings in computation time by this multigrid method.     

Clathrate formation in the tetraisoamylammonium propionate-water system

In this paper we examine clathrate formation in the tetraisoamylammonium propionate-water binary system. We have found formation of four polyhydrates, two of which are metastable over the whole temperature range studied. All polyhydrate crystals were isolated and their compositions and densities determined; for (i-C₅H₁₁)₄NC₂H₅COO·36.5H₂O, unit cell parameters were additionally found. The results are compared with data for tetra-n-butylammonium carboxylate polyhydrates, and the structure of the title compounds is suggested. It is confirmed that the isoamyl radical stabilizes the tetradecahedral void of the clathrate hydrate framework better than the n-butyl radical. Use of X-ray diffraction data in stereochemical studies of (−)-menthone reactions with aromatic aldehydes

X-ray diffraction analysis proved that the stereochemical configuration of interaction products of (−)-menthone with aromatic aldehydes (α,β-unsaturated ketones or β-hydroxyketones) depends on the generation conditions of intermediate enolate carbanions. In irreversible deprotonation of (−)-menthone with strong sterically hindered organometallic bases, products of interaction with aldehydes preserve the 1R,4S-configuration; in equilibrium conditions, 1R,4R-diastereomers of the corresponding α,β-unsaturated ketones are formed with high stereoselectivity. Determination of glycols by HPLC with refractive index detection

A simple and fast HPLC method for the determination of glycols is described. It is characterized by a reversed-phase separation using water as eluent and a refractive index detection. The method was applied to investigate the biodegradation of glycols in a laboratory activated sludge plant and to determine the content of glycols or alcohols in detergents. The detection limit is 4 mg/l ethylene glycol or propylene glycol in an aqueous sample.     

Comparison of four quantification methods for the determination of PCB in transformer oils

The analysis of PCB in transformer oils has been achieved with three HRGC/ECD based methods, proposed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC/TC 10), by the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN/TC 19/WG 22) and by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN 51 527). The same clean-up, described in the CEN/TC 19/WG 22, has been used for all the samples, allowing a comparison of the quantification procedure only. The total chlorine content has also been determined with X-ray fluorescence. These different methods of quantification are compared and their application for legislative purposes is discussed.Dedicated to Professor Dr Dieter Klockow on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

Raman spectroscopic investigations of the structure and phase transitions of liquid crystalline lead(II) alkanoates

Lead(II) alkanoates with even chain lengths from octanoate to octadecanoate have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. In the low frequency region, transverse and longitudinal acoustical modes (TAM, LAM) have been assigned. It was shown that LAM-1 is the vibration of the double chain with the node of the vibration in the Pb²⁺ layer. A fully extended conformation of the chains in the low temperature phase was confirmed. The frequencies and intensities of the LAMs as compared with those of the alkanes and the fatty acids led to an estimate of the force constant and polarizability of the Pb²⁺ -COO^- bond relative to the C-C bond. The defects at the chain ends were investigated in the ρ(CH₃) and v(CC) region. For the intermediate (CM) phase, both the Pb²⁺ layer distance reduction and the chain length independent enthalpy contributions can be attributed mainly to defects at the chain ends.     

Organometallic complexes with biological molecues,part 3. in vivo cytotoxicity of diorganotin (IV) chloro and triorganotin (IV) chloro derivatives of penicillin g on chromosomes of aphanius fasciatus (pisces,cyprinodontiformes)

In order to obtain a continuous source of mitotic metaphases, gill tissue of Aphaius fasciatus (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes) has been successfully employed. Results gathered after exposure of fish to R₂SnClpenG, R₃SnClpenGNa, to the parents R₂SnCl₂, R₃SnCl and to penGNa (penGNa = penicillinGNa; R = methyl, butyl and phenyl) suggest that both the parent organotin (IV) chloride and organotin (IV) chloropenG derivatives are toxic while penGNa exerts no significant toxic activity. Essentially, all of the chromosome abnormalities are classifiable as irregularly staining of chromosomes, breakages, side-arm bridges or pseudochiasmata.
