Asymmetric Pt(II)-catalyzed ene reactions: counterion-dependent additive and diphosphine electronic effects

[reaction: see text]. Catalysis of the glyoxylate-ene reaction by dicationic P2Pt(II) complexes is subject to anion-dependent additive effects. For [((S)-MeOBiphep)Pt](OTf)2 catalysts, acidic phenols such as 3-CF3-C6H3OH or C6F5OH provide substantial rate increases but do not affect the more active SbF6-based catalysts. Enantioselectivity and reactivity also increased with diphosphine basicity, with 4-t-Bu-substituted MeOBiphep ligands yielding the highest enantioselectivities.     

A fuzzy difference equation with an application

Difference equations arise in the modeling of many interesting problems. “Measurements” of data or specified information for an underlying problem may be imprecise or only partially specified. This motivates us to initiate a study of “fuzzy difference equations.” In this paper, we will formulate and solve a given difference equation in the fuzzy setting and give a general method for dealing with any first order difference equation.     

Pd(II) complexes of a sterically bulky, benzannulated N-heterocyclic carbene and their catalytic activities in the Mizoroki-Heck reaction

The bis(N,N′-diisopropylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene)Pd(II) complexes trans-[PdBr₂(ⁱPr₂-bimy)₂] (trans-1) and trans-[PdI₂(ⁱPr₂-bimy)₂] (trans-2) have been prepared in good yields by in situ deprotonation of the corresponding N,N′-diisopropylbenzimidazolium salt (ⁱPr₂-bimyH⁺X⁻) (A: X = Br, B: X = I) with Pd(OAc)₂ in DMSO at elevated temperature. Salt metathesis of trans-1 or trans-2 with AgO₂CCF₃ in refluxing CH₃CN afforded the novel mixed carbene-carboxylato complex cis-[Pd(O₂CCF₃)₂(ⁱPr₂-bimy)₂] (cis-3). This halo/trifluorocarboxylato ligand substitution can be regarded as a selective method for the synthesis of cis-configured bis(carbene) complexes. All compounds have been fully characterized by multinuclei NMR spectroscopies and ESI mass spectrometry. X-ray diffraction studies on single crystals of trans-1, trans-2 and cis-3 revealed a square planar geometry and a fixed orientation of the N-isopropyl substituents with the C-H protons pointing to the metal center to maximize rare C-H?Pd preagostic interactions. These interactions are also retained in solution as indicated by the large downfield shift of the isopropyl C-H protons in the ¹H NMR spectrum compared to those in precursor salts A or B. A preliminary catalytic study revealed that all complexes are highly active in the Mizoroki-Heck coupling of aryl bromides and chlorides. However, these complexes gave slower conversions as compared to catalysts with less bulky benzimidazolin-2-ylidenes. This is most likely due to the steric bulk of the ligands, which hamper a fast reductive formation of catalytically active Pd(0) species.     

Blockade of airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness by an angiopoietin-1 variant, COMP-Ang1

Inflammation of the asthmatic airway is usually accompanied by increased vascular permeability and plasma exudation. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang1) has potential therapeutic applications in preventing vascular leakage. Recently, we developed a soluble, stable, and potent Ang1 variant, COMP-Ang1. COMP-Ang1 is more potent than native Ang1 in phosphorylating the tyrosine kinase with immunoglobulin and epidermal growth factor homology domain 2 receptor in lung endothelial cells. We have used a mouse model for allergic airway disease to determine effects of COMP-Ang1 on allergen-induced bronchial inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness. These mice develop the following typical pathophysiological features of allergic airway disease in the lungs: increased numbers of inflammatory cells of the airways, airway hyper-responsiveness, increased levels of Th2 cell cytokines (IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13), adhesion molecules (intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1), and chemokines (eotaxin and RANTES), and increased vascular permeability. Intravenous administration of COMP-Ang1 reduced bronchial inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness. In addition, the increased plasma extravasation in allergic airway disease was significantly reduced by the administration of COMP-Ang1. These results suggest that COMP-Ang1 attenuates airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness, prevents vascular leakage, and may be used as a therapeutic agent in allergic airway disease.     

Fabrication of an open Au/nanoporous film by water-in-oil emulsion-induced block copolymer micelles

Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion-induced micelles with narrow size distributions of approximately 140 nm were prepared by sonicating the polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymer in the toluene/water (50:1 vol %). The ordered nanoporous block copolymer films with the hydrophilic P2VP interior and the PS matrix were distinctly fabricated by casting the resultant solution on substrates, followed by evaporating the organic solvent and water. The porous diameter was estimated to be about 70 nm. Here, we successfully prepared the open nanoporous nanocomposites, the P2VP domain decorated by Au (5+/-0.4 nm) nanoparticles based on the methodology mentioned. We anticipate that this novelty enhances the specific function of nanoporous films.     

Surface tension-driven self-folding polyhedra

We discuss finite element simulations and experiments involving the surface tension-driven self-folding of patterned polyhedra. Two-dimensional (2D) photolithographically patterned templates folded spontaneously when solder hinges between adjacent faces were liquefied. Minimization of interfacial free energy of the molten solder with the surrounding fluidic medium caused the solder to ball up, resulting in a torque that rotated adjacent faces and drove folding. The simulations indicate that the folding process can be precisely controlled, has fault tolerance, and can be used to fold polyhedra composed of a variety of materials, ranging in size from the millimeter scale down to the nanometer scale. Experimentally, we have folded metallic, arbitrarily patterned polyhedra ranging in size from 2 mm to 15 microm.     

Dinuclear PCP pincer complexes from Lewis acidic [Pd(OTf)(PCP)] and basic [Pd(4-Spy)(PCP)] (OTf = triflate; 4-Spy = 4-pyridinethiolate; PCP = (-)CH(CH(2)CH(2)PPh(2))(2))

The Lewis acidic pincer with a labile triflate ligand, viz. [Pd(OTf)(PCP)] (PCP = (-)CH(CH(2)CH(2)PPh(2))(2)) was prepared from [PdCl(PCP)] with AgOTf. It reacts readily with neutral bidentate ligands [L = 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) and 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf)] to give dinuclear PCP pincers [{Pd(PCP)}(2)(micro-L)][OTf](2) (L = 4,4'-bpy, 2; dppf,3). [PdCl(PCP)] also reacts with 4-mercaptopyridine in the presence of KOH to give a Lewis basic pincer with a free pyridine functional group [Pd(4-Spy)(PCP)]4. Its metalloligand character is exemplified by the isolation of an asymmetric dinuclear double-pincer complex [{Pd(PCP)}(2)(micro-4-Spy)][PF(6)] 6 bridged by an ambidentate pyridinethiolato ligand. Complexes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.     

Pd(II) complexes of N,S-heterocyclic carbenes with pendant and coordinated allyl function and their Suzuki coupling activities

3-(2-Propenyl)benzothiazolium bromide () provides a direct and simple entry to Pd(ii) complexes with N,S-heterocyclic carbene (NSHC) ligands functionalized with an allyl pendant with hemilabile potential. Addition of salt to Pd(OAc)(2) eliminates HOAc and affords the bis(carbene) complexes cis-[PdBr(2)(NHSC)(2)] (cis-, NSHC = 3-(2-propenyl)benzothiazolin-2-ylidene) and trans-[PdBr(2)(NHSC)(2)] (trans-) along with the monocarbene complexes [PdBr(2)(NSHC)] () and trans-[PdBr(2)(benzothiazole-kappaN)(NSHC)] () as minor side products. Salt-metathesis of cis- with AgO(2)CCF(3) yields the mixed dicarboxylato-bis(carbene) complex cis-[Pd(O(2)CCF(3))(2)(NSHC)(2)] (). Complexes cis-, trans- and were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopies, ESI mass spectrometry and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of complexes cis-, and have been determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Complexes cis- and as well as an in situ mixture of Pd(OAc)(2) and salt are active toward Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl bromides and activated aryl chlorides giving good conversions.

We also see that, if uniformly chosen at random, asymptotically almost all permutation graphs are connected.
