Interactions between magnetic nanoparticles can lead to superferromagnetic ordering, i.e. ordering of their magnetic moments at low temperatures. The use of a simple mean field theory, describing the temperature dependence of the order parameter is discussed. This model is found to give excellent fits to experimental results. In systems of particles with pure dipole interactions, the degree of ordering depends critically on the geometrical configuration of the particles. The application of superferromagnetic nanostructures for magnetic refrigeration is also discussed. 相似文献

Long-term, high resolution holographic storage has been achieved in side-chain liquid crystalline polyesters with high diffraction efficiency. The information can be completely erased by heating the film to about 80°C. The modular architecture of the polyesters permits a varition in the length of the main- and side-chains and the substituents of the azo chromophore. Each of these has a profound influence on the storage properties of the polyesters. In this article, we examine the influence of the length of the side-chains, the probe-beam-polarization dependence of the observed signal on the interface and the crystalline vs. amorphous nature of the films for optical storage. 相似文献

Rotational motion loses its coherence as a function of the nuclear internal excitation energy. The damping process does not proceed in a continuous fashion and scars of discrete rotational bands are found, inbedded in a background of damped rotational states, regardless whether the calculations are carried out using effective or “random” forces. The trade-off between traits in life-history strategies has been widely studied for sexual and parthenogenetic organisms,
but relatively little is known about the reproduction strategies of asexual animals. Here, we investigate clonal reproduction
in the freshwater planarian Schmidtea mediterranea, an important model organism for regeneration and stem cell research. We find that these flatworms adopt a randomized reproduction
strategy that comprises both asymmetric binary fission and fragmentation (generation of multiple offspring during a reproduction
cycle). Fragmentation in planarians has primarily been regarded as an abnormal behavior in the past; using a large-scale experimental
approach, we now show that about one third of the reproduction events in S. mediterranea are fragmentations, implying that fragmentation is part of their normal reproductive behavior. Our analysis further suggests
that certain characteristic aspects of the reproduction statistics can be explained in terms of a maximum relative entropy

In the present paper we propose to measure the index of refraction
for diatomic sodium molecules traveling through a cold helium gas. Theoretical
calculations of the index of refraction for this system are presented as a
function of the molecule velocity and atom gas temperature. Whereas previous
theoretical efforts to compute the refractive index have been concerned with
atomic systems and atomic matter waves, we extend the investigation to diatomic
molecules in the present work. To enable such calculations the potential energy
surface for the atom-molecule interaction is calculated ab initio, along with
the long range dispersion coefficients for the atom-molecule system. The full
close-coupled equations, describing the atom-molecule collisions, are solved
numerically to work out the influence of the collisions on the matter waves. We
investigate the sensitivity of the results upon changes and inaccuracies in the
potential energy surface. Several molecular rotational levels are included in
the present study, and the index of refraction is found to depend on the
rotational state. In addition, the index of refraction for atomic lithium
matter waves traveling through the cold noble gases helium and argon are
computed, motivated by a recent experiment with atomic lithium matter waves.
Different resonances (glory- and scattering resonances) are identified from the
results. Such resonances offer an important opportunity for the comparison of

Extensive calculations of the ground state properties of hydrogen chemisorbed on transition metal surfaces are presented. The calculations are performed using the effective medium theory. The results for the chemisorption energies on all the 3d, 4d and 5d metals presented are in good agreement with experiment. The trends along a particular row are shown to be dominated by the degree of filling of the d band. The full adiabatic potential energy surface is presented for a number of experimentally interesting systems, including H/Ni(111), H/Ni(110), H/W(100) and H/W(110). Equilibrium sites, bond lengths, vibrational frequencies and surface diffusion energies are deduced and compared with experiment. Again, agreement is good. The surface and adsorbate parameters determining those observables are discussed. It is shown that a simple canonical relationship exists between the perpendicular vibrational frequency and the metal-hydrogen bond length. This formulation, which is not based on pair potentials, should be useful as a first estimate of bond lengths from measured vibrational data. 相似文献

We generalize our recent approach to the reconstruction of phase dynamics of coupled oscillators from data [B. Kralemann et al., Phys. Rev. E 77, 066205 (2008)] to cover the case of small networks of coupled periodic units. Starting from a multivariate time series, we first reconstruct genuine phases and then obtain the coupling functions in terms of these phases. Partial norms of these coupling functions quantify directed coupling between oscillators. We illustrate the method by different network motifs for three coupled oscillators and for random networks of five and nine units. We also discuss nonlinear effects in coupling. 相似文献

We investigate a set of transparent organic LEDs (TOLEDs) with different organic capping layer (OC) thicknesses to understand the capping layer effect. We find that thickness variation of the OC strongly influences the emission properties of TOLEDs and exhibits different trends for top or bottom emission. The external quantum efficiency for the top side can be enhanced by a factor of 63%, but that of the bottom side only by 4% compared to a reference device without an OC. Additionally, we demonstrate that the introduction of the OC is an effective method to control the bottom-to-top emission ratio within a measured range from 2.87 to 6.05. 相似文献

We demonstrate a near-field Talbot-Lau interferometer for C70 fullerene molecules. Such interferometers are particularly suitable for larger masses. Using three free-standing gold gratings of 1 microm period and a transversally incoherent but velocity-selected molecular beam, we achieve an interference fringe visibility of 40% with high count rate. Both the high visibility and its velocity dependence are in good agreement with a quantum simulation that takes into account the van der Waals interaction of the molecules with the gratings and are in striking contrast to a classical moiré model. 相似文献
