The synthesis and chemical reactions of certain pyrazolo[1,5-a]-1,3,5-triazines

3-Aminopyrazole was utilized as a starting material for the preparation of certain pyrazolo-[1,5-a]-1,3,5-triazines. 4-Chloro-2-methylthiopyrazolo[1,5-a]-1,3,5-triazine was prepared and used for studies of nucleophilic displacement reactions, and it has been found that both the chloro and methylthio groups may be displaced by nucleophiles. By modifications of these procedures we have prepared the adenine, hypoxanthine, and xanthine analogs of the pyrazolo-[1,5-a]-1,3,5-triazine ring system. Electrophilic substitution occurs in the 8-position of this ring system. The methyl group was introduced into the 4-position by a novel ring opening and ring closing of the 1,3,5-triazine ring.     

4.50—Polarographic investigation of conformational changes of human serum albumin: Part I. Unfolding of human serum albumin by urea

The mechanism of the unfolding of human serum albumin by urea was studied using d.c. polarography. It was found that this reaction is a complex process which cannot be described in terms of a two-state transition model. As well as the Brdi?ka catalytic current we have also studied the reduction current of disulfide groups in native and denatured human serum albumin. The number of cystine residues accessible for electrode reduction in native and denatured protein was calculated. On the basis of these results a scheme for the unfolding of human serum albumin by urea is proposed.

Zusammenfassung Um der oft gehörten Meinung entgegenzutreten, die energetischen Wirkungsgrade lebender Organismen seien wesentlich höher als die technischer Verfahren, werden entsprechende Werte miteinander verglichen. Der sehr niedrige Wirkungsgrad der Photosynthese zusammen mit der kleinen Energiedichte der Sonnenstrahlung erzwang ab einer kritischen Größe die Aufspaltung in Energiesammler, die Pflanzen, und Verbraucher chemischer Energie, den Tieren. Dank den 10 mal höheren Wirkungsgraden in der Technik, lassen sich Solarmobile bauen, die von der auf sie fallenden Sonnenstrahlung angetrieben werden. Wegen des Multiplikationsgesetzes der Teilwirkungsgrade ergeben sich sowohl für die Speicherung der Sonnenenergie in den fossilen Brennstoffen wie in der Nahrungskette extrem niedrige Wirkungsgrade.

Efficiencies in the world of life and in engineering

One often hears the opinion, that the efficiencies in the world of life are higher than in engineering. To disprove this, many values of efficiency of corresponding processes are compared. The very low efficiency of photosynthesis in living plants together with the low density of solar radiation has led the world of life to split into collectors of energy, the plants, and consumers of chemical energy, the animals. Thanks to the ten times higher efficiencies of solar cells, it is possible, to produce solar mobiles, vehicles that move driven by solar radiation.

Coherent single pion production by antineutrino charged current interactions and test of PCAC

The cross section for coherent production of a single π^? meson in charged current antineutrino interactions on neon nuclei has been measured in BEBC to be (175±25) 10^?40 cm²/neon nucleus, averaged over the energy spectrum of the antineutrino wide band beam at the CERN SPS; this corresponds to (0.9±0.1) % of the total charged current \(\bar v_\mu \) cross section. The distributions of kinematical variables are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on the PCAC hypothesis and the meson dominance model; in particular, theQ ² dependence is well described by a propagator containing a massm=(1.35±0.18) GeV. The absolute value of the cross section is also in agreement with the model. This analysis thus provides a test of the PCAC hypothesis in the antineutrino energy range 5–150 GeV.     

Rapid synthesis of 2,5‐disubtituted 1,3,4‐thiadiazoles under microwave irradiation

The one pot, three‐components condensation of aromatic aldehydes, hydrazine and sulfur in ethanol under microwave irradiation provided symmetrically 3,5‐disubstituted 1,3,4‐thiadiazoles in high yields and good purity. This reaction must be conducted under pressure of hydrogen sulfide produced in‐situ. The structure of the compounds was confirmed by ¹H, ¹³C NMR, MS and elemental analysis.     

Metal clips induce folding of a short unstructured peptide into an alpha-helix via turn conformations in water. Kinetic versus thermodynamic products

Short peptides corresponding to two to four alpha-helical turns of proteins are not thermodynamically stable helices in water. Unstructured octapeptide Ac-His1-Ala2-Ala3-His4-His5-Glu6-Leu7-His8-NH(2) (1) reacts with two [Pd((15)NH(2)(CH(2))(2)(15)NH(2))(NO(3))(2)] in water to form a kinetically stable intermediate, [[Pden](2)[(1,4)(5,8)-peptide]](2), in which two 19-membered metallocyclic rings stabilize two peptide turns. Slow subsequent folding to a thermodynamically more stable two-turn alpha-helix drives the equilibrium to [[Pden](2)[(1,5)(4,8)-peptide]] (3), featuring two 22-membered rings. This transformation from unstructured peptide via turns to an alpha-helix suggests that metal clips might be useful probes for investigating peptide folding.     

π‐Facial Selectivity in the Formation of Tricarbonylchromium(0) Complexes of Estra‐1, 3, 5(10), 6‐tetraenes

The preparation of two η⁶‐estra‐1, 3, 5(10), 6‐tetraene tricarbonylchromium complexes 4 and 6 are described. In both cases only one stereoisomer can be isolated, in contrast to other estrane‐tricarbonylchromium complexes, where complexations are non‐stereoselective. X‐ray crystal structural analysis of 4 discloses that only the more sterically hindered β‐facial isomer is formed. It is assumed that the 6, 7‐olefinic moiety exerts a directive influence on the complexation.     

Observations on clear solution silicalite-1 growth by nanoslabs

Several research groups have reported the presence of nanometer-sized particles (nanoslabs) in clear solutions, which precipitate the crystalline MFI (ZSM-5) structure. Debate about the growth mechanism for Al-free ZSM-5 (silicalite-1) has revolved around growth by small silicate units (monomers, dimers, etc.) from solution vs growth by nanoslab addition. A model developed for precipitation of uniform sized colloids by addition of sub-colloidal precursor units has been adapted for this zeolite synthesis system. Parameter values were adjusted for the simulation results to match experimental observations from work reported previously, at least to the extent possible. The model involved the simultaneous solution of up to 6000 ordinary differential equations, and required computation times of up to 24 h. The results shed light on the crystal growth mechanism, but pose questions for further investigations of the nucleation mechanism.     

Intercalation of 1,2-Alkanediols into α-Zirconium Hydrogenphosphate

Intercalation compounds of α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · H₂O with 1,2-alkanediols (from C3 to C16) have been prepared by replacing 1-propanol in α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · 2C₃H₇OH with the desired 1,2-alkanediols by a treatment in a microwave field. It was found that the intercalates contain 1.5 molecules of diol per formula unit. The diol molecules are placed between the host layers in a bimolecular way with their aliphatic chains tilted at an angle of 51°. The diol molecules are anchored in the interlayer space by H-bonds. A mixed intercalate, containing 1,2-butanediol and 1,2-decanediol in a roughly equimolar ratio, is formed when the α-Zr(HPO₄)₂ · 2C₃H₇OH intercalate, suspended in a mixture of 1,2-butanediol and 1,2-decanediol, is exposed to microwave radiation. No new phase containing both types of the guest molecules was observed when the 1-propanol intercalate, suspended in a mixture of 1-propanol and 1,2-octanediol, is exposed to microwave radiation.
