Vibrational frequencies and infrared absorption intensities of 1,2-dibromoethane

Infrared and Raman spectra of 1,2-dibromoethane CH₂BrCH₂Br and CD₂BrCD₂Br were observed in the liquid state, and the fundamental frequencies were determined by comparison with those of related molecules. Infrared absorption intensities of fundament bands were measured in the liquid state, and the intensity data were interpreted on the basis of the valence-optical theory. From the converged value of a population ratio, the energy difference between the trans and gauche isomers was determined, which was in good agreement with the value obtained from the temperature effect of the IR spectrum.     

Effects of various thiol molecules added on morphology of dendrimer-gold nanocomposites

Interactions between poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM)-gold nanocomposites and alkanethiols and between the former nanocomposites and thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrons in ethyl acetate were investigated by adding alkanethiols, such as 1-propanethiol and 1,3-propanedithiol, and thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendrons, generations 0.5 and 2.5 (G0.5-SH and G2.5-SH). The PAMAM dendrimers with surface methyl ester groups used were generations 1.5 and 5.5 (G1.5 and G5.5). The mean particle sizes of PAMAM-gold nanocomposites were about 2.1 for G1.5 and 2.4 nm for G5.5. In both nanocomposite systems where 1-propanethiol and 1,3-propanedithiol were added, the mean particle size was about 4 nm, twice that of the systems where these thiols were not added. Increasing the addition of 1,3-propanedithiol made the average particle size smaller for both nanocomposites systems. To compare with alkanethiol, thiol-modified poly(amidoamine) dendron with a highly branched structure on one side was synthesized. Using G2.5-SH as a protective agent, dendron-gold nanocomposites with mean diameters of 3 to 4 nm were obtained. The difference in particle size was seen only when the combination of PAMAM-gold nanocomposites and thiol-modified dendron was less sterically dense, modified dendron (G0.5-SH). The mechanisms for morphology changes in the dendrimer-gold nanocomposites by the addition of these thiols are discussed.

Vibrational frequencies and linewidths of C-H stretching raman bands of organic molecules in aqueous solution

Isotropie Raman spectra of the symmetric C—H stretching bands of several organic molecules are measured in the neat liquid and in solvents including water. The linewidths are interpreted on the basis of the vibrational dephasing model, and intermolecular interactions between the solutes and solvents are discussed.     

3-H-YDROXYRETINAL AS A CHROMOPHORE OF Drosophila melanogaster VISUAL PIGMENT ANALYZED BY HIGH-PRESSURE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY

Abstract— The chromophore of the visual pigment of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster was studied by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Oxime derivatives of the chromophore were successfully analyzed with a more polar solvent than has been used for retinaloximes. A preceding monochromatic irradiation resulted in reversible interchanges in the amount among geometric isomers of the oximes that reflected the photointerconversion of rhodopsin and metarhodopsin of the peripheral photoreceptors (Rl-R6). Authentic all- trans -3-h-ydroxyretinal was used to identify the chromophore from metarhodopsin. Results demonstrated that the chromophore of the visual pigment in Drosophila is 3-h-ydroxyretinal as was proposed in larger flies.     

The surface activity of the lower homologues of n-alkylammonium chlorides in aqueous solutions. Effect of hydrophobic hydration

Summary The surface tensions of aqueous solutions ofn-alkylammonium chlorides (methyl to hexyl) have been measured at 25 °C. With methylammonium chloride the surface tension increased with concentration, whereas with ethylammonium chloride and higher homologues, the surface tension decreased with concentration. The results suggest that this transition is attributed to the effect of hydrophobic hydration. For propylammonium chloride and higher homologues, the relation between the surface tension lowering da and the concentrationC in the range of 0–10 dyne/cm, can be expressed by the equation; = AC + BC, whereA andB are constants. The surface tension coefficientB has been found to increase approximately twofold for each additional CH₂ group of alkyl chain.

Zusammenfassung Es wurden die Oberflächenspannungen wäßriger Lösungen vonn-Alkylammoniumchloriden (Methyl- bis Hexylammoniumchloride) bei 25 °C gemessen. Für Methylammoniumchlorid nimmt die Oberflächenspannung mit der Konzentration zu, aber bei allen höheren Homologen mit der Konzentration ab. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, daß dieser Übergang durch die hydrophobe Hydration bedingt wird. Für Propylammonium-chlorid und die höheren Homologen wird die Beziehung zwischen der Erniedrigung der Oberflächenspannung und der KonzentrationC in dem Bereich von 1 bis 10 dyn/cm durch die folgende Gleichung ausgedrückt: = AC + BC (A undB sind Konstanten). Es wurde gefunden, daß B für jede zusätzliche CH₂-Gruppe etwa um den Faktor 2 größer wird.

     

Accurate and rapid estimation on spectral interferences in routine analysis by ICP-AES: use of mutual interference coefficients

A practical method to estimate spectral interferences and to select optimum analytical lines in ICP-AES is suggested. Depending on the matrix composition and the amounts of the analyte, the analytical lines suffering from little interferences and the limit of determination can be determined from calculation using spectral interference coefficients. For this calculation, the spectral interference coefficients, which are defined as apparent mass of the analyte equivalent to the spectral interference from unit mass of the interferent, are obtained experimentally for 639 emission lines of 68 elements. There is a good correlation between the coefficients obtained on two spectrometers having different resolutions.     

Determination of glutamate-pyruvate transaminase activity in blood serum with a pyruvate oxidase/poly(vinyl chloride) membrane sensor

Pyruvate oxidase (E.C. 1.2.3.3.) is immobilized by adsorption on a wet PVC membrane. Glutamate-pyruvate transaminase activity (5–1600 IU l^?1) in serum is determined by a pyruvate oxidase sensor consisting of the immobilized pyruvate oxidase coupled to a platinum electrode for measuring hydrogen peroxide, after an l-alanine—α-ketoglutarate reaction. The assay requires ?60 s, and has a precision of 2–3%. Endogenous pyruvate should not interfere if measurements are made > 30 s after starting the reaction.
