Application of water as a solvent in microwave-assisted extraction for analysis of PCBs and CBzs in fly ash

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorobenzenes (CBzs) are two classes of dioxin precursors formed in municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs); they produce negative health effects similar to those of dioxins. Reducing the analytical time required for determining the concentrations of these compounds in MSWIs is important for quickly evaluating their importance and assessing associated health risks. In the present study, water is used as a safe and environmentally friendly solvent in microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) for PCB and CBz analyses. MAE is compared with traditional Soxhlet extraction (SE) to determine the extraction efficiencies. The evaluation of extraction efficiencies shows that MAE has a high extraction efficiency compared with that of SE when water content is lower than 60%. Furthermore, the extraction time and organic solvent consumption are reduced with MAE compared with SE.     

Approaches toward High‐Mannose‐Type Glycan Libraries

Asparagine‐linked (N‐linked) sugar chains are widely found in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER), which has attracted renewed attention because of its participation in the glycoprotein quality control process. In the ER, newly formed glycoproteins are properly folded to higher‐order structures by the action of a variety of lectin chaperones and processing enzymes and are transported into the Golgi, while terminally misfolded glycoproteins are carried into the cytosol for degradation. A group of proteins related to this system are known to recognize subtle differences in the high‐mannose‐type oligosaccharide structures of glycoproteins; however, their molecular foundations are still unclear. In order to gain a more precise understanding, our group has established a strategy for the systematic synthesis of high‐mannose‐type glycans. More recently, we have developed “top‐down” chemoenzymatic approaches that allow expeditious access to theoretically all types of high‐mannose glycans. This strategy comprehensively delivered 37 high‐mannose‐type glycans, including G1M9–M3 glycans, and opened up the possibility of the elucidation of structure–function relationships with a series of high‐mannose‐type glycans.     

Staphylionosides A-K: megastigmane glucosides from the leaves of Staphylea bumalda DC

Chemical investigation of leaves of Staphylea bumalda DC., collected in the suburbs of Hiroshima City, afforded 11 new megastigmane glucosides, named staphylionosides A-K (3-13), along with two known megastigmane glucosides (1, 2). The relative structures were elucidated from spectroscopic evidence, and the absolute structures of the aglycones were determined by means of the combination of beta-D-glucosylation-induced shift-trends and the modified Mosher's method.     

Application of intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cyclic addition of azide and olefin; construction of (pyrrolidine-2-ylidene)glycinate and glycinamides

Oxopropyl E-(pyrrolidine-2-ylidene)glycinamide (5c) and allyl E-(pyrrolidine-2-ylidene)glycinate (5d) were effectively synthesized from 2,3,5-tri-O-benzyl-4-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl(TBDMS)-D-arabinal (7) using intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cyclic reaction of azide and olefin as a key reaction. These results proved this cyclic reaction should be applicable for the synthesis of various (pyrrolidine-2-ylidene)glycinate and glycinamide. In addition, the development of a synthetic route for the precursor of an unsaturated cyclic dehydro amino acid involved in azinomycins (carzinophilin) using relating glycinate, methyl E-(pyrrolidine-2-ylidene)glycinate (5a) was described.     

Application of capillary electrophoresis to the analysis of inorganic ions in environmental samples

A comprehensive review is presented of the state-of-the-art of capillary electrophoresis for application to the analysis of inorganic species, mainly ions, in environmental samples. This brief review covers the developments principally in sensitivity and matrix interference for the determination of inorganic ions in the following samples: drinking, mineral, surface, and ground waters, rainwater, snow, seawater, brine and waste waters, aerosol, and others. References published mainly from 1995 to 1997 were summarized in this review.     

Measurements of 127I M?ssbauer spectra for iodine compounds

127I M?ssbauer spectra of good quality were obtained at 20 K using a Zn127mTe source produced by high flux neutron irradiation of 66Zn-126Te at reactor core. The M?ssbauer spectra for KI and some iodine(III) compounds with absorption intensity of about 5% suggest that the 127I M?ssbauer spectroscopy is useful in elucidating the bonding nature of the iodine compounds. Preparative method of the M?ssbauer source and experimental technique are reported in detail.
