Probing solute-solvent interaction in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids: A time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy study

Rotational diffusion of two organic solutes, coumarin153 (C153) and 4-aminophthalimide (AP) has been investigated in four ionic liquids (ILs), viz. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate (EMIMTFA), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate (EMIMESU), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMTFB) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate (EMIMTCB), as a function of temperature. Between the two probes, AP can act as hydrogen-bond-donor to the solvents having hydrogen bond acceptor ability. The results indicate that the rotational dynamics of C153 is mainly governed by the viscosity of the medium. On the other hand, the rotational motion of AP is found to be significantly hindered in the ILs depending on the nature of anions of the ILs. Rotational coupling constant values for AP in the ILs follow the order TFA?>?ESU?>?TCB?>?TFB. The slower rotational motion of AP in these ILs has been attributed to the specific hydrogen bonding interaction between AP and anions of ILs.

Effects of multiple blade interaction on the containment of blade fragments during a rotor failure

A finite element analysis is used to study the impact and the containment aspects of rotor blade fragments that are produced during a aircraft jet engine rotor failure. The impact and containment studies are performed on a ring-type containment structure and various fragment types are considered in this study. For each type of fragment, the ring thickness is varied incrementally and the ring response, residual kinetic energy level of the fragments, magnitude of impact forces and the overall containment or failure are determined. First, only a single fragment is considered and the rotor is assumed to contain no other blades. Next, the remaining blades are introduced and the effects of multiple collisions with the other blades on the containment are analyzed. The explicit, nonlinear finite element code Dyna3d is used for the numerical computations in this study and the results are compared with the experimental results performed on a T58 rotor at the spin facility of the Naval Air Propulsion Test Center.     

On some permutation binomials and trinomials over $$\mathbb {F}_{2^n}$$

In this work, we completely characterize (1) permutation binomials of the form \(x^{{{2^n -1}\over {2^t-1}}+1}+ ax \in \mathbb {F}_{2^n}[x], n = 2^st, a \in \mathbb {F}_{2^{2t}}^{*}\), and (2) permutation trinomials of the form \(x^{2^s+1}+x^{2^{s-1}+1}+\alpha x \in \mathbb {F}_{2^t}[x]\), where s, t are positive integers. The first result, which was our primary motivation, is a consequence of the second result. The second result may be of independent interest.     

Fuctionalization of Linear and Angular Phenothiazine and Phenoxazine Ring Systems via Pd(0)/XPhos Mediated Suzuki‐Miyaura Cross‐coupling Reactions

Chloro‐substituted phenothiazines and phenoxazines were successfully derivatized with phenylboronic and styrylboronic acids using Suzuki–Miyaura cross‐coupling reaction catalyzed by Pd(0)/XPhos for the first time in good yields. The protocol employed 4 mol% Pd and 7 mol% XPhos with K₃PO₄ in acetonitrile at 80°C. The reaction condition is compatible with carbonyl and unprotected N–H groups in substrates. Structural assignments were established by combined spectroscopic (UV, IR, ¹H, and ¹³C NMR), MS, and elemental analytical data.     

Synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and magnetic properties of homo- and heterodinuclear complexes of transition and non-transition metal ions with a new Schiff base ligand

Four homodinuclear complexes of Ni(II)-Ni(II), Cu(II)-Cu(II), Co(II)-Co(II) and Co(III)-Co(II) and five heterodinuclear complexes of Co(III)-Zn(II), Co(III)-Cu(II), Co(III)-Ni(II), Cu(II)-Zn(II) and Zn(II)-Cu(II) with the octadentate Schiff base compartmental ligand 1,8-N-bis(3-carboxy)disalicylidene-3,6-diazaoctane-1,8-diamine (H4fsatrien) have been synthesized. The complexes have been characterized with the help of elemental analyses, molecular weights, molar conductances, magnetic susceptibilities and spectroscopic (UV-vis, IR, ESR) data. Cryomagnetic data also helped to elucidate the structural features of the Cu(II) complexes.     

A Spirocyclohexyl Nitroxide Amino Acid Spin Label for Pulsed EPR Spectroscopy Distance Measurements

Site‐directed spin labeling and EPR spectroscopy offer accurate, sensitive tools for the characterization of structure and function of macromolecules and their assemblies. A new rigid spin label, spirocyclohexyl nitroxide α‐amino acid and its N‐(9‐fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) derivative, have been synthesized, which exhibit slow enough spin‐echo dephasing to permit accurate distance measurements by pulsed EPR spectroscopy at temperatures up to 125 K in 1:1 water/glycerol and at higher temperatures in matrices with higher glass transition temperatures. Distance measurements in the liquid nitrogen temperature range are less expensive than those that require liquid helium, which will greatly facilitate applications of pulsed EPR spectroscopy to the study of structure and conformation of peptides and proteins.     

Two-dimensional supramolecular assembly of phenylmercury(II) and cadmium(II) complexes with a tridentate thiohydrazone NNS donor ligand: Synthesis,coordination behavior and crystal structure

The reaction of phenylmercury(II) acetate and cadmium(II) acetate with a refluxed solution of diacetylmonoxime and morpholine N-thiohydrazide formed a novel phenylmercury(II) complex, [PhHg(Hdammthiol)] (1) and a cadmium(II) complex, [Cd(Hdammthiol)₂] (2), respectively (where H₂dammthiol is the thiol form of diacetylmonoximemorpholine N-thiohydrazone (Hdammth) formed by the condensation of diacetylmonoxime and morpholine N-thiohydrazide in the presence of phenylmercury(II) and cadmium(II) ions). The complexes were characterised by elemental analyses and spectral data (electronic, infrared and ¹H NMR) and also by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The X-ray crystallography shows that the phenylmercury(II) complex attained a tricoordinated distorted T-shaped structure, while the cadmium(II) complex attained a trapezoidal bipyramidal geometry. The phenylmercury(II) complex forms a two-dimensional sheet via C–H?O and O–H?N hydrogen bonding and also forms a two-dimensional supramolecular dimer, having C–H?π synthons. Intermolecular C–H?O and O–H?O hydrogen bonding of the cadmium(II) complex forms a two-dimensional supramolecular sheet along the bc plane and posses an impressively short intermolecular C(sp³)?O(sp³) contact.     

Photophysics of representative ketocyanine dyes: dependence on molecular structure

Spectral properties of a new fluorescent ketocyanine dye have been discussed. The energy of maximum absorption/fluorescence of the dye exhibits bathochromic shift with increasing polarity of the medium. Both dipolarity-polarisability and hydrogen bond donation interaction contribute to solvation of the dye. Study of fluorescence parameters points to existence of different emitting states of the dye for aprotic and protic solvents. While the emitting state is the (1)(π, π*) state for aprotic solvents, fluorescence supposedly take place from a different emitting state involving H-bond formation in the excited state in protic solvents. Fluorescence parameters of the dye have been compared with those for a structurally similar symmetric ketocyanine dye. The faster decay of the dye relative to its symmetric counterpart has been explained as due to an increase of nonradiative decay.
