Phase Diagrams of Semicrystalline Polymer–Crystalline Substances: Polyolefins–1,2,4,5-Tetrachlorobenzene

The full phase diagrams of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) mixtures with 1,2,4,5-tetrachlorobenzene (TeCB), including the solubility curve of TeCB in a solid polymer, were constructed by an optical method. The diagrams contain a eutectic point that corresponds to the situation when the crystallization of TeCB out of its solution in a polyolefin is accompanied by the crystallization of monomer units of the macromolecules. As a result, the polymer acquires a gel structure with crystallites as crosslinks and amorphous regions saturated with TeCB. It is demonstrated that the eutectic point position on the phase diagram can be used for ranking polymers with respect to their thermodynamic affinity to a solvent. For the studied systems, the affinity to TeCB was decreased in the order i-PP, HDPE, and LDPE. Direct experimental evidence was obtained that TeCB crystals can be dissolved in a solid polymer via a vapor phase mechanism, which leads to the polymer amorphization.     

Features of an InAsSbP epilayer formation on an InAs support by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy

Epitaxial layers in a system of InAs_1–x–ySb_yP_x solid solutions in the composition range of 0 < x < 0.72 were obtained on an InAs(001) substrate by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The layer-by-layer analysis of obtained structures by secondary ion mass spectrometry showed a gradient change in the composition along the growth direction. A dramatic change in the composition at the layer/substrate heteroboundary was observed for the quaternary InAsSbP solid solutions due to the presence of radicals of arsenic compounds in the gas phase. Upon MOVPE deposition on the InAs substrate in a system of InAsSbP solid solutions, the decrease in the solid-phase content of arsenium by less than (1–x–y) < 0.3 resulted in a suppression of the deposited layer gradientness, as well as suppressed fluctuations in the composition in the initial transition layer.     

Pulsed microwave-driven argon plasma jet with distinctive plume patterns resonantly excited by surface plasmon polaritons

Atmospheric lower-power pulsed microwave argon cold plasma jets are obtained by using coaxial transmission line resonators in ambient air.The plasma jet plumes are generated at the end of a metal wire placed in the middle of the dielectric tubes.The electromagnetic model analyses and simulation results suggest that the discharges are excited resonantly by the enhanced electric field of surface plasmon polaritons.Moreover,for conquering the defect of atmospheric argon filamentation discharges excited by 2.45-GHz of continued microwave,the distinctive patterns of the plasma jet plumes can be maintained by applying different gas flow rates of argon gas,frequencies of pulsed modulator,duty cycles of pulsed microwave,peak values of input microwave power,and even by using different materials of dielectric tubes.In addition,the emission spectrum,the plume temperature,and other plasma parameters are measured,which shows that the proposed pulsed microwave plasma jets can be adjusted for plasma biomedical applications.
