Galerkin method for optimal control of second‐order evolution equations

This paper presents the Galerkin approximation of the optimization problem of a system governed by non‐linear second‐order evolution equation where a non‐linear operator depends on derivative of the state of the system. The control is acting on a non‐linear equation. After giving some results on the existence of optimal control we shall prove the existence of the weak and strong condensation points of a set of solutions of the approximate optimization problems. Each of these points is a solution of the initial optimization problem. Finally we shall give a simple example using the obtained results. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis of paramagnetic BODIPY dyes as new double (spin and fluorescence) sensors

Paramagnetic pyrroline and 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine derivatives of BODIPY and their diamagnetic analogs have been synthesized and characterized as novel redox double sensor and cation sensitive reagents.     

Chern and Pontryagin Numbers in Perfect Symmetries of Spheres

The paper presents a procedure for constructing smooth actions of finite perfect groups on spheres with fixed point sets having certain prescribed properties (Theorem A); in particular, having any prescribed configuration of Chern and Pontryagin numbers (Corollary C). The main ingredients used are equivariant thickening and equivariant surgery.     

Time-resolved synchrotron X-ray study of crystalline phase transition in poly(aryl ether ketone ketone) containing alternated terephthalic/isophthalic moieties

Unique crystallization and melting behavior in poly(aryl ether ketone ketone) containing alternated terephthalic and isophthalic moieties were studied by time-resolved synchrotron x-ray methods. Recently, this material has been shown to exhibit three polymorphs (forms I, II, and III). In this work, we further investigated their distinctive thermal properties and found that form I is the dominating and the most thermally stable phase while form II is favored by fast nucleation conditions and is the least stable phase. On the other hand, form III represents a minor intermediate phase that usually coexists with form I and can be transferred from form II and to form I. Structural and morphological changes in form I have been followed by simultaneous wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD)/small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements during cold- or melt-crystallization and subsequent melting. In all cases, a larger dimensional change was found in the crystallographic a-axis than the b-axis during heating and cooling. This may be due to the greater lateral stress variation with respect to temperature along the a direction of the primary lamellae which is induced by either the formation of secondary lamellae or the preferential chain-folding direction in poly(aryl ether ketone ketone)s. During the phase transitions of form II ← III in the cold-crystallized specimen and form III ← I in the melt-crystallized samples, lamellar variables (long period, lamellar thickness, and invariant) obtained from SAXS remain almost constant. This indicates that the density distribution in the long spacing is independent of the melting in form II or III. For melt-crystallization, the corresponding changes in unit-cell dimensions and lamellar morphology during the annealing-induced low endotherm are most consistent with the argument that these changes are due to the melting of thin lamellar population. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Tablet disintegration monitored by magnetic resonance imaging

The disintegration of bromhexin tablets was monitored by magnetic resonance imaging. The fast imaging method FLASH with spoiling gradients was used to obtain images of the tablets in short time intervals. The rate of the disintegration depends on the preparation method, kind and percentage of the carrier (polyethylene glycol, lactose). Solid dispersion with slow evaporation of solvent yields materials with decreased dissolution rate. Increasing molecular mass of polyethylene glycol and its percentage content also hampers disintegration.

Minimizing Maximum Weighted Error for Imprecise Computation Tasks

We consider the problem of preemptively scheduling a set of imprecise computation tasks on m ≥ 1 identical processors, with each task T_i having two weights, w_i and w′_i. Two performance metrics are considered: (1) the maximum w′-weighted error; (2) the total w-weighted error subject to the constraint that the maximum w′-weighted error is minimized. For the problem of minimizing the maximum w′-weighted error, we give an algorithm which runs in O(n³ log²n) time for multiprocessors and O(n²) time for a single processor. For the problem of minimizing the total w-weighted error subject to the constraint that the maximum w′-weighted error is minimized, we give an algorithm which also has the same time complexity.     

The complete grapht-packings andt-coverings

The aim of this paper is to introduce the notions of floor and ceiling functions related to graph edge-decompositions intot mutually isomorphic parts. It is shown that, given any natural numbert, uniform and extremal t-packing andt-covering exist for each complete graph and each complete bipartite graph. Extremal in this context means that both a remainder and a surplus are absolutely minimum. In proofs, decompositions of multigraphs into matchings are involved. Open problems and conjectures are stated.
