4‐Benzoyl‐3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐1,4‐benzoxazine‐2‐carbonitrile: refinement using a multipolar atom model

The structural model for the title compound, C₁₆H₁₂N₂O₂, was refined using a multipolar atom model transferred from an experimental electron‐density database. The refinement showed some improvements of crystallographic statistical indices when compared with a conventional spherical neutral‐atom refinement. The title compound adopts a half‐chair conformation. The amide N atom lies almost in the plane defined by the three neighbouring C atoms. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by weak intermolecular C—H...O and C—H...π hydrogen bonds.

Van der Pauw method on a sample with an isolated hole

Explicit results of the van der Pauw method for a sample containing an isolated hole are presented together with experimental confirmation. Results of measurements and numerical analysis strongly suggest that four probe resistivities obey inequality similar in the form to the famous van der Pauw equation. The inequality seems to be valid for any sample with an isolated hole and contacts located on the same edge, however rigorous proof is not given. The inequality can be used for experimental detection of the sample quality.     

Syntheses and reactions of terpene β-hydroxyselenides and β-hydroxydiselenides

A convenient method for the synthesis of optically active trans-hydroxyselenides and trans-hydroxydiselenides from the bicyclic terpene group based on the reactions of sodium selenide or sodium diselenide with cis- and trans-(+)-3-carane, trans-(+)-2-carane and (?)-β-pinane epoxides is described. The corresponding cis-hydroxy and cis-methoxydiselenides were obtained in the reaction of sodium diselenide with β-hydroxy- and β-methoxytosylates. The influence of a hydroxy group at the β-position on the diastereomeric ratio of the products of the asymmetric methoxyselenenylation of styrene has been established by composition of the products, crystal structure analyses, and theoretical calculations using a DFT method on the B3LYP level (6-311G(d)).     

The effect of structure on the thermoresponsive nature of well‐defined poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) methacrylates) synthesized by ATRP

Statistical copolymers of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO₂MA) and tri(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO₃MA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) providing copolymers with controlled composition and molecular weights ranging from M_n = 8,300–56,500 with polydispersity indexes (M_w/M_n) between 1.19 and 1.28. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the copolymers increased with the mole fraction of MEO₃MA in the copolymer over the range from 26 to 52 °C. The average hydrodynamic diameter, measured by dynamic light scattering, varied with temperature above the LCST. These two monomers were also block copolymerized by ATRP to form polymers with molecular weight of M_n = 30,000 and M_w/M_n from 1.12 to 1.21. The LCST of the block copolymers shifted toward the LCST of the major segment, as compared to the value measured for the statistical copolymers at the same composition. As temperature increased, micelles, consisting of aggregated PMEO₂MA cores and PMEO₃MA shell, were formed.
