Aeroacoustics research in Europe: The CEAS-ASC report on 2010 highlights

The Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS) Aeroacoustics Specialists Committee (ASC) supports and promotes the interests of the scientific and industrial aeroacoustics community on an European scale and European aeronautics activities internationally. In this context, “aeroacoustics” encompasses all aerospace acoustics and related areas. Each year the committee highlights some of the research and development projects in Europe.This paper is a report on highlights of aeroacoustics research in Europe in 2010, compiled from information provided to the ASC of the CEAS.At the end of 2010, project X-NOISE EV of the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission has been launched as a continuation of the X-Noise series, with objectives of reducing aircraft noise and reaching the goal set by the ACARE 2020 Vision.Some contributions submitted to the editor summarizes selected findings from European projects launched before or concluded in 2010, while other articles cover issues supported by national associations or by industries. Furthermore, a concise summary of the workshop on “Aeroacoustics of High-Speed Aircraft Propellers and Open Rotors” held in Warsaw in October is included in this report.Enquiries concerning all contributions should be addressed to the authors who are given at the end of each subsection.     

A note on idempotents in finite AW*-factors

We prove that the value of the quasi-trace on an idempotent element in an AW*-factor of type is the same as the dimension of its left (or right) support.

     

Nested Heuristic Methods for the Location-Routeing Problem

The concept of ‘nested methods’ is adopted to solve the location-routeing problem. Unlike the sequential and iterative approaches, in this method we treat the routeing element as a sub-problem within the larger problem of location. Efficient techniques that take into account the above concept and which use a neighbourhood structure inspired from computational geometry are presented. A simple version of tabu search is also embedded into our methods to improve the solutions further. Computational testing is carried out on five sets of problems of 400 customers with five levels of depot fixed costs, and the results obtained are encouraging.     

Unambiguous identification of three beta-decaying isomers in 70Cu

Using resonant laser ionization, beta-decay studies, and for the first time mass measurements, three beta-decaying states have been unambiguously identified in 70Cu. A mass excess of -62 976.1(1.6) keV and a half-life of 44.5(2) s for the (6-) ground state have been determined. The level energies of the (3-) isomer at 101.1(3) keV with T(1/2)=33(2) s and the 1+ isomer at 242.4(3) keV with T(1/2)=6.6(2) s are confirmed by high-precision mass measurements. The low-lying levels of 70Cu populated in the decay of 70Ni and in transfer reactions compare well with large-scale shell-model calculations, and the wave functions appear to be dominated by one proton-one neutron configurations outside the closed Z=28 shell and N=40 subshell. This does not apply to the 1+ state at 1980 keV which exhibits a particular feeding and deexcitation pattern not reproduced by the shell-model calculations.     

Claisen-type addition of glycine to pyridoxal in water

The reaction between 5'-deoxypyridoxal and glycine in D2O buffered at pD 7.0 does not result in significant formation of the expected products of pyridoxal-catalyzed transamination or deuterium exchange of the alpha-amino protons of glycine, but rather gives a quantitative yield of the two diastereomeric products of the formal Claisen-type addition of glycine to 5'-deoxypyridoxal. The unexpected extensive formation of these products reflects the extraordinary selectivity of the 5'-deoxypyridoxal-stabilized glycine enolate toward addition to the carbonyl group of 5'-deoxypyridoxal in the protic solvent water.     

The length of harmonic forms on a compact Riemannian manifold

We study -dimensional Riemannian manifolds with harmonic forms of constant length and first Betti number equal to showing that they are -step nilmanifolds with some special metrics. We also characterize, in terms of properties on the product of harmonic forms, the left-invariant metrics among them. This allows us to clarify the case of equality in the stable isosytolic inequalities in that setting. We also discuss other values of the Betti number.

     

Production of biologically inert Teflon thin layers on the surface of allergenic metal objects by pulsed laser deposition technology

Allergic-type diseases are current nowadays, and they are frequently caused by certain metals. We demonstrated that the metal objects can be covered by Teflon protective thin layers using a pulsed laser deposition procedure. An ArF excimer laser beam was focused onto the surface of pressed PTFE powder pellets; the applied fluences were 7.5–7.7 J/cm². Teflon films were deposited on fourteen-carat gold, silver and titanium plates. The number of ablating pulses was 10000. Post-annealing of the films was carried out in atmospheric air at oven temperatures between 320 and 500 °C. The thickness of the thin layers was around 5 μm. The prepared films were granular without heat treatment or after annealing at a temperature below 340 °C. At 360 °C a crystalline, contiguous, smooth, very compact and pinhole-free thin layer was produced; a melted and re-solidified morphology was observed above 420 °C. The adhesion strength between the Teflon films and the metal substrates was determined. This could exceed 1–4 MPa depending on the treatment temperature. It was proved that the prepared Teflon layers can be suitable for prevention of contact between the human body and allergen metals and so for avoidance of metal allergy. Organically modified Pd-silica catalysts applied in Heck coupling

Pd-silica catalysts prepared by depositing Pd onto silica precursors modified by surface methyl or phenyl groups through the reduction of Pd2+ ions with surface Si-H functions exhibit high activity and selectivity in Heck coupling.
