Resonances in low-energy rare-gas atom scattering

Precise values of energies and widths of low-lying resonances in some rare-gas atom systems (Ar-Ar, Ne-Kr, Ne-Xe) are reported.     

Combination of three analytical techniques for speciation of Al in environmental samples

An analytical scheme is proposed which combines three speciation techniques for determination of particular Al species in soil extracts and percolating waters. A cation-exchange fast protein liquid chromatography — inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (FPLC-ICP-AES) procedure, a microcolumn chelating ion-exchange chromatography- atomic absorption spectrometry (MCC-ETAAS) technique and the 8-hydroxyquinoline spectrophotometric method (8HQ-spectrophotometry) were employed. The FPLC-ICP-AES procedure offers determination of Al³⁺ (retention time 4.5 min) and Al(OH)²⁺ species (retention time 4.0 min) which are separated from Al(OH)⁺ ₂ (retention time 1.5min). AlF²⁺ coelutes with Al(OH)²⁺ species, while Al(SO₄)⁺, AlF⁺ ₂ and negatively charged Al organic complexes coelute with Al(OH)⁺ ₂ species. The MCC-ETAAS technique enables determination of the sum of positively charged monomeric aqua- and hydroxy-Al species plus sulphate- and fluoro-Al complexes. Employing the 8HQ-spectrophotometry the sum of positively charged monomeric aqua- and hydroxy-Al species plus sulphato- and most of the labile organic Al species are determined. The sensitivities of these selected techniques were adequate for speciation of Al in the samples analyzed. On the basis of the specific selectivity of a particular technique various groups of Al species may be determined. Thus, the comparison of analytical data from complementary procedures provides more comprehensive information on Al species present in soil extracts and percolating waters.     

The frequency-domain method reveals the dimeric structure of Na,K-ATPase

Lucifer yellow and lissamine rhodamine sulfonyl hydrazine were used as the donor and the receptor, respectively, for Förster energy transfer measurements to determine the location of the subunit in the native Na,K-ATPase from pig kidney. It was found that (1) the subunits are located in one functional complex, i.e., the dimer ()₂ appears to be the functional complex of Na,K-ATPase, and (2) the subunits in the functional enzyme complex in the membrane are not located next to each other but are rather well separated. The distance between fluorophores covalently attached to the subunits was found to be 5.3 nm.     

Chiral 1,4-benzodiazepines—-XI: Kinetics of degenerate nucleophilic exchange of C(3)-hydroxy group

The rate for degenerate nucleophilic exchange (k_e) of the C(3)-OH group in the racemic compound 1 was determined in DMSO/H₂¹⁸O using mass spectrometry. Epimerization rates for diastereomers 15 and 16 were determined by polarimetry (k_ep) and NMR spectroscopy (k_r-c—for $\text{r}$ing-$\text{c}$hain tautomery). The ratio $\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{e}}\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{ep}}$ ~ 3.5 35° is close to that obtained for degenerate nucleophilic exchange of the C(3)-OMe group in the compound 1a ($\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{e}}\text{k}{}_{\mathrm{\alpha }}$ ~4, Refs. [3,4]). These data confirm the C(3)-OH substituted 1,4-benzodiazepin-2-ones lose the configurational identity of the C(3) chiral centre by both direct nucleophilic substitution of the OH group, and ring-chain tautomery processes.The synthesis of the diastereomeric compounds 15 and 16, and their chromatographic separation is described.     

Studium des gegenseitigen Einflusses der Bindungen in Thiocyanat-Kupfer(II)-Komplexen mit Methyl- und Dimethylpyridinen mittels Infrarotspektroskopie

The infrared spectra of thiocyanato-copper(II) complexes of the type Cu(NCS)₂ L ₂ with all isomeric picolines and lutidines (L) as well as those of the type Cu(NCS)₂ L ₃ withL=3- and 4-picoline, 3,4- and 3,5-lutidine were measured. The behaviour of the (CN) stretching vibrations of the Cu(NCS)₂ L ₂ complexes led to conclusions on the different kind of coordination of the NCS groups in dependence on the ligandL. The mutually conditioned strength of the Cu–NCS and Cu–N(L) bonds in the equatorial plane, especially in the presence of ligandsL with the steric effect, was determined from the frequency shift of the Cu–NCS and Cu–N(L) stretching vibrations with regard to the vibrations for Cu(NCS)₂(pyridine)₂.

Extraction of americium,lanthanides and some fission product elements by bidentate phosphonates

The extraction of Am, Eu, Ce(III), Zr(IV), and Sr from aqueous nitric acid— nitrate media by dibutyl N,N-diethylcarbamylphosphonate and dibutyl N,N-diethylcar-bamylmethylenephosphonate dissolved in carbon tetrachloride was studied. The trivalent actinide and lanthanide elements may be separated in certain aqueous phase acidity regions from Fe(III), Zr(IV), and Sr, whereas the separation of actinide elements from the lanthanide elements is poor. The extractant to metal ratio in the extracted complexes of Am, Eu, and Ce(III) is 3. The interferences in the extraction due to acidic impurities in the extracting agent are discussed.     

Electrochemical oxidation of formic acid at noble metals: Catalytic effects of foreign metal monolayers

The catalytic effects of a submonolayer of lead on noble metals have been shown and discussed in terms of a previously published model. A theoretical analysis of these effects is presented. It was demonstrated that foreign metal monolayers allow a determination of the true catalytic activity of electrodes in the case of self-poisoning reactions. A volcano-shaped curve for oxidation of formic acid on noble metal electrodes was obtained.     

Correction procedure for the electron microprobe analysis of porous materials

A correction method is proposed for the quantitative determination of stoichiometric ratios in porous materials by electron microprobe analysis. Analysis of this kind of material is complicated by an imperfect surface that can only be improved to some extent. The correction is based on a linear dependence (different for each element) of the analyses on a sum of weight concentrations of oxides. With this correction it is possible to use analyses affected by the imperfection of the surface with much better confidence compared to common normalisation. An example is presented for a series of ceramic superconductors Bi_2.1(SrCa)_2.9Cu₂O₈₊.     

Electrical properties of some crystalline salts of adenine

In the present paper we report the first experimental results on ac and dc conductivity and permittivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate and adenine sulphate measured at atmospheric and high hydrostatic pressures. For both materials ac conductivity is of ^s type, where:s 1·1· Room temperature dc conductivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate equals approximately 5×10^{–15 –1} cm^–1 with an activation energy of 0·86 eV; dc conductivity of adenine sulphate is less than 10^–16 cm^–1. On the basis of these measurements and those carried out at high pressure, it is concluded that conductivity of adenine hemisulphate hydrate is of electronic type.The authors wish to thank Dr. J. On distributions of antibaryons in\bar p-Nucleus inelastic collisions

In the framework of the dual parton model we calculate the spectra of secondary antibaryons in \(\bar p\) -nucleus non-annihilation inelastic interactions. We find that the number of antibaryons in the backward hemisphere in the \(\bar p\) -nucleon centre-of-mass frame can grow with the atomic number of the nucleus.
