Supramolecular nanocarrier of siRNA from PEG-based block catiomer carrying diamine side chain with distinctive pKa directed to enhance intracellular gene silencing

An siRNA nanocarrier formed through self-assembly of PEG-based block catiomer possessing two distinct amino groups with different pKa values in a side chain was developed. This design provided the carrier with a sufficient siRNA complexation and an assumed buffering capacity in the endosomes, allowing it to exhibit remarkable gene knockdown abilities as well as sufficient serum tolerability.     

The first bowl-shaped stable neutral radical with a corannulene system: synthesis and characterization of the electronic structure

[structure: see text] A bowl-shaped neutral radical with a corannulene system has been designed and synthesized for the first time as a stable solid in air. An unequivocal characterization of the electronic properties of the radical shows that an appreciable amount of spin delocalization extends onto the corannulene unit's curved surface.     

Application of a diphosphinidenecyclobutene ligand in the solvent-free copper-catalysed amination reactions of aryl halides

1,2-Diphenyl-3,4-bis[(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)phosphinidene]cyclobutene was used as an additive ligand in copper-catalysed amination reactions of halobenzenes with amines in the presence of base to afford the corresponding secondary or tertiary amines in good to excellent yields.     

Angular position of nodes in the superconducting gap of quasi-2D heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the ( +/- pi,+/- pi) directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first-order transition at H(c2), indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d(x(2)-y(2)), implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconductivity.     

All-optical image processing by means of a photosensitive nonlinear liquid-crystal film: edge enhancement and image addition-subtraction

We demonstrate two simple yet efficient all-optical image-processing techniques that use nonlinear photosensitive dye-doped nematic liquid-crystal films, namely, edge enhancement and image addition-subtraction operations. These films require no external bias and function at much lower optical powers and shorter response times than other conventional methods.     

Synthesis of substituted 3-iodopyrroles by electrophilic cyclization of propargylic aziridines

The electrophilic cyclization of propargylic aziridines is described. 3-Iodopyrroles having a variety of substituents were conveniently synthesized by the reaction of propargylic aziridines with iodine. The resulting substituted 3-iodopyrrole was further functionalized to the tri-substituted pyrroles with high efficiency.     

Stereoselective synthesis of cyclic hemiacetals from 4-formylbenzoates and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes using a sulfoalkyl-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst

N-Heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed transformation of 4-formylbenzoates and α,β-unsaturated aldehydes to cyclic hemiacetals is described. The reaction proceeded smoothly when the sulfopropyl-substituted imidazolium salt was used as the catalyst. Various substrates were converted to the corresponding cyclic hemiacetals in a stereoselective manner.     

Semiempirical Pm3 Quantum Mechanics Calculations of Carbohydrate Crystals

ABSTRACT

Miniature crystal models of six small carbohydrates were examined using the PM3 semiempirical quantum mechanics method. The minicrystal structures, consisting of 27 sugar residues, were optimized by the combined procedure of partial optimization and reconstruction of the model, while maintaining the original crystal symmetries. All of the minicrystals were successfully optimized without exhibiting a great increase in an energy at any reconstruction step. Some minicrystals showed a prolonged behavior of optimization cycles. A major source of structure change appeared to arise from hydroxyl group rotations wherein the largest movements mostly occurred in an early optimization stage. No significant deformations in geometry of either residues or hydrogen bonds were observed in the final minicrystal structures. The thermodynamic values calculated for the optimized minicrystals were in reasonably good agreement with the literature data. The present study indicated that the PM3 semiempirical method successfully predicted the basic features of intermolecular hydrogen bonding involved in a condensed system.     

Fragmentation reactions of optically active trisubstituted cyclopropylcarbinyl radicals.

Fragmentation reactions of optically active trisubstituted cyclopropylcarbinyl radicals and their application to the synthesis of natural products are described. Preparation of the optically pure substrates for radical fragmentation reactions was efficiently accomplished by lipase-mediated desymmetrization of sigma-symmetrical 3-substituted-1,2-cyclopropanedimethanols. In the presence of a radical stabilizing group, e.g., aryl, ester, or alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, the fragmentation occurs selectively to generate the radical on the alpha-carbon of the group and provide the optically pure alkene derivatives. These derivatives possess three chemically distinct functionalities, making them excellent chiral building blocks for the construction of biologically active molecules. The synthetic usefulness of the procedure developed here has been demonstrated by an application to the enantioselective synthesis of both enantiomers of the key intermediate, 4-(3,4-methylenedioxybenzyl)dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one (54), for the total synthesis of biologically active lignans.
