The decrease in the overall algorithmic complexity of the spin-echo effect

Recently Lloyd and Zurek studied the algorithmic complexity of the spin-echo effect and concluded that the overall complexity of spins together with the magnetic field grew slowly even during the rephasing stage. In this paper we show that, in contrast to their conclusion, the complexity decreases during the rephasing stage. We also clarify the origin of the disagreement.     

All-optical data-latch experiments for photonic access nodes in the photonic highway

A novel approach to direct access at the optical level is proposed. We conducted experiments on all-optical data-latch functions using bistable laser diodes (LDs) for all-optical droplinsert operation in a 50-Mbitls data highway.     

Synthesis,crystal structures and magnetic properties of Co particles encapsulated in carbon nanocapsules

Carbon-coated cobalt particles were produced by arc-evaporation of a Co-packed graphite rod in a modified fullerene generator. Cobalt particles grown were in an fcc phase, with a trace amount of hcp-Co. The particles were nominally spherical in shape, and typically 10–100 nm in diameter. Thickness and structure of outer carbon layers could be controlled by varying the relative area of a Co-packed hole drilled in the graphite rod. Saturation magnetization (M _s) and the coercive force (H _c) was measured between room temperature and 800°C for powder samples: Temperature dependence of the measured M _s was consistent with that for fcc-Co. The highest value of M _s of 160 emu/g at room temperature, nearly the same value for bulk fcc-Co, was obtained for Co particles covered with thin carbon layers. H _c varied from 600 Oe to 300 Oe, depending on the size of Co particles.

Thermosensitive copolymers having soluble and insoluble monomer units,poly(N‐vinylacetamide‐co‐methyl acrylate)s: Effect of additives on their lower critical solution temperatures

New thermosensitive polymers were synthesized by copolymerization between N‐vinylacetamide (NVA) and methyl acrylate whose homopolymers are soluble and insoluble in water, respectively. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the obtained copolymers ranged between 59 and 83 °C, and the LCST increased with an increasing NVA content in the copolymers. The effectiveness of various salts addition on lowering the LCST of the copolymer solutions followed Hoffmeister series. NaCl and Na₂SO₄ addition linearly lowered the LCST with an increasing salts concentration, and slopes of the lines were almost constant regardless of the copolymer composition. The effectiveness of alcohols with various alkyl chain lengths on lowering the LCST did not follow the viscosity B coefficient values of the alcohols, which was probably the result of preferential adsorption of the alcohols to the copolymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
