Synthesis of poly(isobutyl‐co‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) with 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenylporphinato platinum(II) moiety as an oxygen‐sensing dye for pressure‐sensitive paint

Pressure‐sensitive paint (PSP), which consists of luminescent molecules embedded in an oxygen‐permeable polymer, has been developed for use in wind‐tunnel experiments. To improve the PSP technique, a novel luminescent methacrylate monomer, 5‐[4‐(2‐methacryloyloxyethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]‐10,15,20‐triphenylporphinato platinum(II), was synthesized and copolymerized with isobutyl methacrylate and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate to produce a dye‐pendant copolymer ( 2 ). The introduction of 5,10,15,20‐tetraphenylporphinato platinum(II) (PtTPP) dye into 2 was confirmed by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and extended X‐ray absorption fine structure measurements. The extent of PtTPP dye incorporation in 2 was proportional to the molar fraction of the PtTPP‐pendant methacrylate monomer in the feed. The oxygen‐sensing property of 2 was compared with that of a PSP consisting of PtTPP dye embedded in poly(isobutyl‐co‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate). Although the simple mixture of PtTPP and poly(isobutyl‐co‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) showed a marked deviation from a single Stern–Volmer relation, novel copolymer 2 gave a highly linear Stern–Volmer plot. Rydberg states (n = 4–29) of azabicyclo [2.2.2] octane as studied by two-color fluorescence DIP and multiphoton ionization spectroscopies

Two-color fluorescence dip and multiphoton ionization (MPI) spectra have been observed for azabicyclo [2.2.2] octane in a supersonic jet. The spectra showed well-resolved structures consisting of five Rydberg series of n = 4–29. The five Rydberg series were assigned to s, p_z, p_xy, and two d orbitals. From the spectra obtained after exciting the molecule to various vibronic levels in the S₁ (3s) state, the Δν = 0 selection rule was obtained for the Rydberg-Rydberg transition. The same selection rule was found to be preserved also for the transition from the S₁ state to the ion. It was shown that the autoionization of the high Rydberg states to the ion is governed by Δν=?1. The existence of a very fast non-radiative channel was found for the Rydberg state from the ω₂ power dependence on the two-color MPI spectra.     

Transport of calcium and potassium ions in opposite directions in a liquid membrane system

A new type of 18-crown-6 derivative having two carboxylic acids on the side arms transported calcium and potassium ions in opposite directions across a dichloromethane membrane by pH control. Calcium and potassium ions were concentrated in the acidic and the basic phases, respectively. The presence of picrate ion in the acidic phase plays an important role in the transport of potassium ion from the acidic to the basic phase.     

SVL fluorescence and duschinskii effect in the S1 state of pyridine

SVL fluorescence spectra from principal bands in the S₁ state of pyridine h₅ and -d₅ were measured. A large displacement of the normal coordinate origin of v_6a and the Duschinskii rotation of v_10a and v_16a were established.     

Complexing ability of N-oligoethylene glycol monoaza crown ethers with sodium and potassium cations

N-Oligoethylene glycol monoaza crown ethers were prepared, and the notable effect of oxyethylene oxygen atoms of the side chain on complexing ability with sodium and potassium cations was confirmed.     

Synthesis of substituted thiacrown ethers via a bromoalkoxylation reaction

A variety of alkyl- or phenyl-substituted thia-crown ethers were prepared in two or three steps via bromoalkoxylation reactions of olefins. Dialkyl- and phenyl-substituted mono-and dithia-crown ethers were obtained as single compounds, whereas monoalkyl-substituted derivatives were a mixture of two positional isomers reflecting the isomeric mixture formation in the bromoalkoxylation reaction.
