Peracetylated cellulose: end group modification and structural analysis by means of <Superscript>1</Superscript>H-NMR spectroscopy

A homologous series of partially hydrolyzed celluloses (level-off-DP cellulose) with weight-average molecular weight (DP_w) < 150 were peracetylated and characterized by ¹H-NMR spectroscopy. The results demonstrate the utility of ¹H-NMR spectroscopy to assign the chemical shifts of all end groups of the peracetylated cellulose. On the one hand, the chemical shifts of all methine and methylene protons of the non-reducing terminal end group (TEG) as well as the - and -anomer of the reducing end group (REG) could be determined by two-dimensional NMR techniques (COSY-DQF) and by selective excitation of isolated proton signals (1D-TOCSY) of these end groups. On the other hand, the spectral resolution was high enough to determine the number-average molecular weight (DP_n) of peracetylated level-off-DP cellulose (LODP cellulose acetates) as shown in comparison with the data of gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This molecular weight determination of cellulose using end group analysis by means of ¹H-NMR spectroscopy was demonstrated for the first time. Furthermore, a specific modification of hydroxyls in end groups could be exemplified in case of 1-OH-deacetylation of the REG of peracetylated LODP cellulose.     

Aqueous chemistry of transition metals in oxidation state (I) in Nanodroplets

"Nanodroplets" consisting of a central ion surrounded by a solvation shell of water molecules provide an interesting medium for studies of aqueous transition-metal chemistry in the unusual oxidation state (I). While VI undergoes efficient, solvent shell dependent redox reactions to VII and VIII, the absence of any similar reactivity in aqueous CrI, Mn1, FeI, CoI, NiI, and CuI clusters is explained by a rapid precipitation of the corresponding single monochloride molecules from the nanosolutions.     

Dosimetry inside MIR station using a silicon detector telescope (DOSTEL)

The dosimetry telescope (DOSTEL) was flown on the MIR orbital station during October 1997-January 1998. The mission average contributions to the absorbed dose rates (in water) were 126 +/- 4 microGy/d and 121 +/- 13 microGy/d for the GCR and the SAA component, respectively. The mean quality factors (ICRP60) deduced from the LET-spectra are 3.5 +/- 0.2 (GCR) and 1.3 +/- 0.1 (SAA). Separate LET spectra and temporal variations of the absorbed dose rates and of the mean quality factors are presented for these two radiation components as well as for solar energetic particles of the November 6, 1997 event.     

Sur la phase initiale d'un écoulement laminaire non permanent en tube cylindrique circulaire

Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine Strömung nicht permanenten Charakters untersucht, die dem Entleeren eines zylindrischen Gefässes durch ein kreiszylindrisches Rohr entspricht.Die zeitliche Entwicklung einer Grenzströmung wird hervorgehoben. Versuchsergebnisse und rechnerisch ermittelte Werte sind in gutem Einklang.
