Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers with biodegradable chain extenders were synthesized and tested for mechanical performance and biocompatibility. The design of the TPUs was based on structural modification of a mechanically appropriate aromatic isocyanate‐based TPU. As the aromatic isocyanate was substituted with a less toxic but also less “hard” aliphatic isocyanate, the chain extender plays an important role on the mechanical properties. Here, the terephthalate ester chain extender was found to work better than hydroxyl ethyl lactate in providing polymers with mechanical properties similar to commercial aromatic isocyanate‐based TPUs. The polymers were degraded in aqueous solutions at elevated temperatures and compared to polylactic acid (PLA) to partially simulate biodegradation. The lactate‐based TPUs degraded about twice as fast as PLA while the terephthalate‐based TPU degraded much more slowly. The latter material was processed by electrospinning to give a tubular graft approximately the size of a large rat blood vessel. Initial results from implantation of these TPUs into rats are promising and indicate that biodegradation occurs and is likely beneficial to cell proliferation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we present a novel approach using surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy for the sequence‐specific detection of DNA utilizing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for the enrichment of the target molecules. To achieve fast and efficient binding of longer DNA strands, e.g. PCR products, the hybridization procedure is performed in solution. To further purify and enrich the DNA strands of interest, MNPs are used for their separation. Following the binding of the target DNA, a dye‐modified, short synthetic ssDNA is hybridized, which serves as label for the SERS detection. The SERS spectra are used to identify the bound molecules. The applicability of this approach was first tested with short synthetic oligonucleotides to evaluate its specificity. Afterward, the system was applied to detect PCR products amplified from DNA of specific agents of epizootic diseases. Sequences of the bacterium Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides small colony type (MmmSC), causing contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) were used as PCR targets. Background

Delirium increases morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs especially in the elderly. Serum anticholinergic activity (SAA) is a suggested biomarker for anticholinergic burden and delirium risk, but the association with cerebral cholinergic function remains unclear. To clarify this relationship, we prospectively assessed the correlation of SAA with quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) power, delirium occurrence, functional and cognitive measures in a cross-sectional sample of acutely hospitalized elderly (> 80 y) with high dementia and delirium prevalence.

Methods

61 consecutively admitted patients over 80 years underwent an extensive clinical and neuropsychological evaluation. SAA was determined by using radio receptor assay as developed by Tune, and standard as well as quantitative EEGs were obtained.

Results

15 patients had dementia with additional delirium (DD) according to expert consensus using DSM-IV criteria, 31 suffered from dementia without delirium (D), 15 were cognitively unimpaired (CU). SAA was clearly detectable in all patients but one (mean 10.9 ± 7.1 pmol/ml), but was not associated with expert-panel approved delirium diagnosis or cognitive functions. Delirium-associated EEG abnormalities included occipital slowing, peak power and alpha decrease, delta and theta power increase and slow wave ratio increase during active delirious states. EEG measures correlated significantly with cognitive performance and delirium severity, but not with SAA levels.

Conclusion

In elderly with acute disease, EEG parameters reliable indicate delirium, but SAA does not seem to reflect cerebral cholinergic function as measured by EEG and is not related to delirium diagnosis.  相似文献

We present a bifurcation analysis of a normal form for traveling waves in one-dimensional excitable media. The normal form that has been recently proposed on phenomenological grounds is given in the form of a differential delay equation. The normal form exhibits a symmetry-preserving Hopf bifurcation that may coalesce with a saddle node in a Bogdanov-Takens point, and a symmetry-breaking spatially inhomogeneous pitchfork bifurcation. We study here the Hopf bifurcation for the propagation of a single pulse in a ring by means of a center manifold reduction, and for a wave train by means of a multiscale analysis leading to a real Ginzburg-Landau equation as the corresponding amplitude equation. Both the center manifold reduction and the multiscale analysis show that the Hopf bifurcation is always subcritical independent of the parameters. This may have links to cardiac alternans, which have so far been believed to be stable oscillations emanating from a supercritical bifurcation. We discuss the implications for cardiac alternans and revisit the instability in some excitable media where the oscillations had been believed to be stable. In particular, we show that our condition for the onset of the Hopf bifurcation coincides with the well known restitution condition for cardiac alternans.  相似文献

The long-lived radio isotope 237Np is generated within the nuclear fuel cycle and represents a major hazard in the final disposal of nuclear waste. Related geochemical research requires sensitive methods for the detection of ultratrace amounts of neptunium in environmental samples. Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has proven to be one of the most sensitive methods for the detection of plutonium. A precondition for the application of RIMS to ultratrace analysis of neptunium is the knowledge of an efficient and selective scheme for optical excitation and ionization. Therefore, a multitude of medium to high-lying atomic levels in neptunium was located by applying in-source resonance ionization spectroscopy. By using excitation via six previously known first excited, intermediate levels of odd parity, a set of twelve so far unknown high-lying levels of even parity were identified and studied further for their suitability in resonant excitation/ionization schemes. Autoionizing resonances for efficient ionization of neptunium atoms were subsequently accessed spectroscopically. Altogether five resonance ionization schemes were investigated and characterized concerning their saturation behavior and relative efficiency. Applying a calibrated sample, an overall efficiency of 0.3% was determined.  相似文献

We extend the usual notion of fuzzy set in such a way that the elements of fuzzy sets again can be fuzzy sets. For such fuzzy sets of higher level the fuzzy set theoretic operations are generalized up to the notion of a fuzzy mapping. In our presentation of the results we use a suitable many valued logic, indicating in this way the close formal connections between fuzzy and classical set theory.  相似文献

We present a theoretical analysis of the structural properties and phase behavior of spherical, loosely cross-linked ionic microgels that possess a low monomer concentration. The analysis is based on the recently derived effective interaction potential between such particles [A. R. Denton, Phys. Rev. E 67, 011804 (2003)]. By employing standard tools from the theory of the liquid state, we quantitatively analyze the pair correlations in the fluid and find anomalous behavior above the overlap concentration, similar to the cases of star-branched neutral and charged polymers. We also employ an evolutionary algorithm in order to predict the crystalline phases of the system without any a priori assumptions regarding their symmetry class. A very rich phase diagram is obtained, featuring two reentrant melting transitions and a number of unusual crystal structures. At high densities, both the Hansen-Verlet freezing criterion [J.-P. Hansen and L. Verlet, Phys. Rev. 184, 151 (1969)] and the Lindemann melting criterion [F. A. Lindemann, Phys. Z. 11, 609 (1910)] lose their validity. The topology of the phase diagram is altered when the steric interactions between the polymer segments become strong enough, in which case the lower-density reentrant melting disappears and the region of stability of the fluid is split into two disconnected domains, separated by intervening fcc and bcc regions.  相似文献
