Studies to test the noxious effect of mercury ions on wheat germination and seedling growth showed that germination rate, shoot length, and fresh weights varied as a function of their concentration in the treatment solutions. At the same concentration, the radioactive mercury proved to be more harmful to the living seeds and seedlings. The detoxification action of glutathione for both radioactive and non-radioactive mercury was also followed. After a seven-day period of germination in the presence of the investigated compounds, the wheat plantlets were cut from the seeds, and their height, weight, and residual radioactivity were measured. The shoot length decreased from 8.1 (blank) to 4.6 cm (non-radioactive mercury) or even to 2.5 cm ((203)Hg), while glutathione had both an anti-toxic and an anti-radiotoxic effect (6.4 and 6.0 cm, respectively). The root weight of the lot decreased from 1.7 to 0.7 g and 0.4 g, respectively, while glutathione showed a healing action (1.5 and 1.7 g). The radioactive ions accumulated especially in roots (35.5 %), and less in shoots (11.2 %). Results were statistically validated.  相似文献

Bovine Type I collagen was investigated, building on a large scale computer model of a collagen fibril in water, and focusing on two stages of the leather manufacturing process. The effects of different salts (NaCl, CaCl(2), and Na(2)SO(4)) on the swelling behavior of collagen at low pH (the pickling process) were studied. The salts suppress the swelling of the fibrils at low pH and we find specific stabilizing influences for CaCl(2) and Na(2)SO(4), due to weak Ca(2+)/Cl(-) and strong SO(4) (2-)/lysine/arginine interactions, respectively. Using state-of-the-art sampling techniques, such as the metadynamics algorithm, to allow an efficient exploration of configuration space, we were able to investigate the effect of polyacrylate and poly(methyl acrylate) - two polymeric retanning agents - on the fibril. Both polymers interact with the ammonium groups on the surface, but polyacrylate shows significantly stronger interactions. We suggest that it is this stronger interaction that contributes to the reduced suitability of PAA as a tanning agent.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the first part of testing a novel electrospun fiber mat based on a unique macromolecule: polyisobutylene (PIB). A PIB-based compound containing zinc oxide (ZnO) was electrospun into self-supporting mats of 203.75 and 295.5 g/m2 that were investigated using a variety of techniques. The results show that the hydrophobic mats are not cytotoxic, resist fibroblast cell adhesion and biofilm formation and are comfortable and easy to breathe through for use as a mask. The mats show great promise for personal protective equipment and other applications.  相似文献

The present investigation describes the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles based on poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) intramolecularly cross-linked with diamine, 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine), using water-soluble carbodiimide. The aqueous colloid dispersions of nanoparticles were clear or mildly opalescent depending on the ratio of cross-linking, pH of the solution, and the molecular weight of PAA, finding consistent with values of transmittance between 3% and 99%. The structure was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and the particle size was identified by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements. It was found that particle size depends on the pH, and at a given pH, it was caused by the ratio of cross-linking and the molecular weight of PAA. Particle size measured by TEM varied in the range of 20 and 80 nm. In the swollen state, the average size of the particles measured by DLS was in the range of 35–160 nm.  相似文献
