Novel macroscopic BC3 honeycomb sheet

We have successfully grown a uniform BC₃ honeycomb sheet with high crystalline quality over the entire macroscopic area of the NbB₂ (0001) surface by carbon-substituted technique in a boron honeycomb. This is the first macroscopic uniform sheet of single-crystal BC₃ with a monolayer thickness. So far, only BC₃ micro-crystals with radii of a few nanometres were produced. The properties of the sheet have been investigated by using XPS, AES, LEED, STM, ARUPS and HREELS. All the experimental data and the theoretical calculations, which are concerning with atomic structure, chemical concentration, and phonon structure, indicated that the uniform BC₃ honeycomb sheet was grown in an epitaxial manner to the substrate lattice.     

Optically driven actuators using poly(vinylidene difluoride)

Optically driven actuators have a feature of a non-contact method supplied by light energy. A new method is proposed with three poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) cantilevers as the legs and a polymer film as the body. The PVDF cantilevers are coated with silver on one surface. When one side of the cantilever is irradiated by a laser beam, an electric field is produced along a cross-section of the cantilever by the pyroelectric effect and a mechanical displacement occurs by the piezoelectric effect. Its response time and its generated force are measured experimentally. Two types of optically driven actuators using PVDF film are proposed to move using different characteristics.     

Transverse mode control by manipulating gain distribution in a Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk

We demonstrated that transverse mode can be controlled by manipulating gain distribution in a Yb:YAG ceramic thin disk. Several elongated higher order transverse modes of a Hermite-Gaussian beam were observed when a straight-line-shaped gain region was created by using a diode laser output from an optical fiber. An orthogonally crossing pair of straight-line-shaped gain regions created with an additional optical fiber output resulted in the generation of a doughnut-shaped Laguerre-Gaussian beam. This implies that easy and quick switching of Hermite-Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian beams is possible without mechanical handling.     

The use of dsc to assess the stabilization of thermoplastic eucalyptus tar pitch fibers

During the production of pitch-based carbon fibers, oxidative thermal stabilization is an important intermediary step, because it permits the thermoplastic as-spun fibers to be rendered thermosetting. In the present work, DSC analyses are employed to assess the stabilization of eucalyptus tar pitch fibers. This is possible due to the pronounced differences noticed between DSC profiles of green and oxidized fibers, which reflect the changes that the fiber structure undergoes during stabilization. Mechanical Characterization Measurement of Polymer Material under Stress by Birefringence Microscope

Some polymer materials under tensile stress provide us interesting information. Internal structure changes of polymer materials must be observed by external stress. Birefringence shows the orientation characteristic in molecular orientation. A microscopic measurement system for birefringence distribution is proposed to analyze the relation between applied stress and birefringence distribution of an internal structure. Birefringence distributions of gelatin such as phase difference and azimuthal angle are shown in cases of loading and unloading stress as a demonstration. The phase difference increased nonlinearly with each process, and change of birefringence in the elastic domain was different from that in the plastic domain.     

Macroscopic single‐domain graphene sheet on Ni(111)

We observed in situ growth of a single graphene sheet on Ni(111) by low‐energy electron microscopy. The sheet was grown epitaxially beyond the steps on the substrate. The crystalline shapes of graphene islands were clearly seen; the straight edges of the island are crossed at either 60 or 120°, and the linear edges shifted perpendicular to the edge keeping the equilibrium shape. Graphene islands were united to form a single sheet without any grain boundaries and any wrinkles. The Ni substrate of several centimeters in size was covered with a single‐domain graphene sheet. Phosphoproteome Profiling Using a Fluorescent Phosphosensor Dye in Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis

We validated the novel PhosphoQUANTI SolidBlue Complex (PQSC) dye for the sensitive fluorescent detection of phosphorylated proteins in polyacrylamide- and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (PAGE and 2DE, respectively). PQSC can detect as little as 15.6 ng of ß-casein, a pentaphosphorylated protein, and 61.3 ng of ovalbumin, a diphosphorylated protein. Fluorescence intensity correlates with the number of phosphorylated residues on the protein. To demonstrate the specificity of PQSC for phosphoproteins, enzymatically dephosphorylated lysates of Swiss 3T3 cells were separated in 2DE gels and stained by PQSC. The fluorescence signals in these gels were markedly reduced following dephosphorylation. When the phosphorylated proteins in Swiss 3T3 cell lysates were concentrated using a phosphoprotein enrichment column, the majority of phosphoproteins showed fluorescence signals in the pI 4–5 range. Finally, we performed phosphoproteome analysis to study differences in the protein phosphorylation profiles of proliferating and quiescent Swiss 3T3 cells. Over 135 discernible protein spots were detected, from which a selection of 15 spots were identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF-MS). The PQSC staining procedure for phosphoprotein detection is simple, reversible, and fully compatible with MALDI TOF-MS.     

Confinement in carbon nanospace-induced production of KI nanocrystals of high-pressure phase

An outstanding compression function for materials preparation exhibited by nanospaces of single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) was studied using the B1-to-B2 solid phase transition of KI crystals at 1.9 GPa. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction examinations provided evidence that KI nanocrystals doped in the nanotube spaces of SWCNHs at pressures below 0.1 MPa had the super-high-pressure B2 phase structure, which is induced at pressures above 1.9 GPa in bulk KI crystals. This finding of the supercompression function of the carbon nanotubular spaces can lead to the development of a new compression-free route to precious materials whose syntheses require the application of high pressure.     

Shedding light on hidden reaction pathways in radical polymerization by a porous coordination network

A coordination network comprising 2-vinyltriphenylene was treated with AIBN at a high temperature, but the radical polymerization of the vinyl monomer was completely suppressed by spatial separation and otherwise hidden aerobic oxidation pathways are enhanced.
