Enantiomeric separations of cationic and neutral compounds by capillary electrochromatography with monolithic chiral stationary phases of beta-cyclodextrin-bonded negatively charged polyacrylamide gels

Enantiomeric separation by capillary electrochromatography with beta-cyclodextrin-bonded negatively charged polyacrylamide gels was examined. The columns used are capillaries filled with a negatively charged polyacrylamide gel, a so-called monolithic stationary phase, to which allyl carbamoylated beta-CD (AC-beta-CD) derivatives covalently bind. The capillary wall is activated first with a bifunctional reagent to make the resulting gel bind covalently to the inner surface of the fused-silica tubing. Enantiomeric separations of 15 cationic compounds were achieved using the above-mentioned columns and mobile phases of 200 mmol l(-1) Tris-300 mmol I(-1) boric acid buffer (pH 7.0 or 9.0) or 200 mmol l(-1) Tris-300 mmol l(-1) boric acid buffer (pH 7.0) containing an achiral crown ether (18-crown-6). Enantiomeric separations of two neutral compounds were also achieved using 200 mmol l(-1) Tris-300 mmol l(-1) boric acid buffer (pH 9.0) as a mobile phase. High efficiencies of up to 150,000 plates m(-1) were obtained. Both the within- and between-run reproducibilities of retention time and separation factor were good. The reproducibilities of retention time and separation factor for three different columns prepared from a different batch of monomers were acceptable. The gel-filled capillaries were stable for at least 3 months with intermittent use, utilizing the mobile phase of 200 mmol I(-1) Tris-300 mmol I(-1) boric acid buffer (pH 9.0).     

Fixation of a cholesteric helical structure by the photopolymerization of a cholesteryl derived monomer

A cholesteryl derived monomer was synthesized according to a conventional synthetic route; it exhibits a cholesteric phase above 129°C, and shows a red colour due to selective reflection in the cholesteric phase. Photopolymerization of the monomer was carried out at 135°C in the cholesteric phase. The helical structure of the cholesteric phase of the monomer was frozen by photopolymerization. A peak based on the selective reflection of the cholesteric phase was detected at 615 nm in the transmittance UV-Vis spectrum. Mixtures of the monomer with a binaphthyl derivative were prepared to control the selective reflection wavelength; they all also exhibited a cholesteric phase. The selective reflection wavelength of the mixture was dependent upon the ratio of the binaphthyl derivative in the mixture. This wavelength became shorter with increasing ratio of the binaphthyl derivative. The polymer films obtained by photopolymerization displayed almost the same selective reflection wavelength as the corresponding mixtures before photopolymerization. The selective reflection wavelength of the polymer films did not change up to about 250°C.     

Projective structures with discrete holonomy representations

Let denote the set of projective structures on a compact Riemann surface whose holonomy representations are discrete. We will show that each component of the interior of is holomorphically equivalent to a complex submanifold of the product of Teichmüller spaces and the holonomy representation of every projective structure in the interior of is a quasifuchsian group.

     

Measurement of natural plasma flow along the field lines in the scrape-Off layer on the JT-60U divertor tokamak

The plasma profile and parallel plasma flow in the scrape-off layer (SOL) were systematically measured using reciprocating Mach probes installed at the outer midplane and near the divertor magnetic null (x point) in the JT-60U tokamak with a single null divertor. For the ion vertical drift due to the toroidal magnetic field gradient (ion nablaB drift) directed towards the divertor, SOL plasma flow along the magnetic field lines away from the divertor ("flow reversal") was discovered at the midplane far from the divertor. A quantitative evaluation of the ion "Pfirsch-Schluter flow," wherein the parallel flow is naturally produced in a toroidal plasma, was consistent with the measurement.     

A<Subscript>4</Subscript> symmetry and lepton masses and mixing

Stimulated by Ma’s idea, which explains the tribimaximal neutrino mixing by assuming an A₄ flavor symmetry, a lepton mass matrix model is investigated. A Frogatt–Nielsen-type model is assumed, and the flavor structures of the masses and mixing are caused by the VEVs of SU(2)_L singlet scalars φ_i ^u and φ_i ^d (i=1,2,3), which are assigned to 3 and (1 ,1 ’,1 ”) of A₄, respectively. Possible charged lepton and neutrino mass spectra and mixing are investigated.     

Charged lepton mass matrix with democratic family mixing

By starting from a mass matrix with family-independent mixing (the so-called “democratic” family mixing) and by requiring some simple constraints on the additional mass terms, but without any small parameters, a mass relation which is in excellent agreement with experiment is derived for charged leptons.
