Video-Assisted Rigid Endoscopic Laryngosurgery: Application to Cases with Difficult Laryngeal Exposure

In some cases of microlaryngosurgery, laryngeal exposure with a direct laryngoscope is difficult because of a variety of reasons. In such cases, we now use a long rigid endoscope inserted into the side tube of the direct laryngoscope together with a video system. The lesion can be removed while the phonosurgeon observes the magnified images of the larynx on the video monitor. We describe the surgical procedure together with the preoperative and postoperative evaluation of vocal function in 13 patients with benign laryngeal lesions. A good surgical and vocal outcome was achieved in all cases. The method appeared to be useful for treating dysphonia in patients in whom it was difficult to expose the larynx with a direct laryngoscope.     

Electron spin resonance studies of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine liposomes containing soybean-derived sterylglucoside

The effects of soybean-derived sterylglucoside (SG) on the fluidity of liposomal membrane composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) were investigated compared with those of soybean-derived sterol (SS) and cholesterol (Ch) using an electron spin resonance spectrometer. Three kinds of liposomes were prepared in the molar ratio of DPPC/X=7/4, where X is SS, Ch or SG. The fluidity close to the polar head groups increased with an increase of temperature in the DPPC membrane containing SS, Ch and SG in the range 35 to 45 degrees C. Those near the hydrophobic end changed with an increase in temperature in liposomes containing SS, Ch and SG, which had a fluidizing effect on the DPPC membrane below the transition temperature (Tm, 41.9 degrees C) and a condensing effect over the Tm. The fluidizing effects of these compounds around 37 degrees C near the polar head group and the hydrophobic end increased in the following order: Ch < SG < or = SS and SS < Ch < SG, respectively. SG increased the fluidity of liposomal membrane dramatically above the Tm (35.4 degrees C). These results suggest that the high fluidity close to the hydrophobic end of the liposomal membranes around 37 degrees C, the decrease of Tm, and the sigmoidal nature of fluidity vs. temperature are important factors in the effectiveness of liposomes containing SG as a carrier of drugs.     

Stereochemical studies on the formation of melanin by monophenol monooxygenase

The oxidation of tyrosine by monophenol monooxygenase (tyrosinase: EC 1.10.3.1) to melanin has been studied by a combination of ultraviolet, circular dichroism, and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. It is demonstrated that the chiral intermediate (dopachrome) is generated stereoselectively in this enzymic reaction.     

Nanoscale soldering of metal nanoparticles for construction of higher-order structures

We demonstrated that platinum nanoparticles dispersed in pure water were "soldered" by gold into higher-order structures such as "nanowebs". In practice, gold nanoparticles in water containing the platinum nanoparticles were melted by irradiation of a pulsed 532-nm laser, which excites selectively the surface plasmon band of the gold nanoparticles, and the melted gold nanoparticles solder the platinum nanoparticles together into the nanowebs. Optical absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy together with electron probe microanalysis were employed to observe the structure of the nanowebs and to elucidate their formation dynamics.     

Syntheses of 3-acetoacetylaminobenzo[b]furan derivatives having cysteinyl leukotriene 2 receptor antagonistic activity

Novel 3-acetoacetylaminobenzo[b]furan derivatives having a modified triene system at the 3-position were synthesized starting with 3-aminobenzo[b]furans. The enol isomers, 3-[(3-hydroxybut-2-enonyl)amino]benzo[b]furans (), of the 3-acetoacetylaminobenzo[b]furans were obtained as stable isomers owing to formation of a hydrogen bonding between the enol hydroxyl group and the amidocarbonyl group. The planarity of the C-2 substituent through the C-3 side chain suggested the existence of a modified conjugational triene system in the enol compound. Cysteinyl leukotriene 1 and 2 receptor antagonistic activities for these compounds were evaluated. 2-(4-Cyanobenzoyl or ethoxycarbonyl)-3-[(2-cyano-3-hydroxybut-2-enonyl)amino]benzo[b]furans (, ) were moderately active.     

Liquid Phase Epitaxy of AlGaInP on GaAs Substrate Using AlGaAs Buffer Layer

Liquid phase epitaxial layers of AlGaInP were successfully grown on Al_0.9Ga_0.1 As buffer layer with varying aluminum melt composition. Epitaxial layers were characterised by using a scanning elelctron microscope, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence (PL) and Auger depth profile measurements. The shortest peak wavelength of PL spectra obtained in the samples was 630 nm at room temperature. It was found that the thickness of the AlGaInP layer is very small due to rapid change of aluminum in the melt composition.     

How are spin gap and pairing correlations of doped Mott insulators controlled by the geometry of the lattice structure?

Proposals to enhance the spin excitation gap and the pairing correlations in doped Mott insulators are reviewed. Design and tuning of flat dispersions near the Fermi level extend the critical region of the metal-to-Mott insulator transition thereby inducing stronger pairing instabilities. Several one- and two-dimensional decorated lattices are studied. We also discuss the tuning for stronger d-wave pairing instabilities in a microscopic model of high-T_c cuprates.     

Cable guns as a plasma source in a plasma opening switch

The characteristics of a plasma generated by cable plasma guns have been studied by a laser interferometer. Cable plasma guns are frequently used as a plasma source in plasma opening switches. In our experiments, the plasma source consists of eight coaxial cable guns mounted on the outer electrode of concentric coaxial electrodes. The reproducibility of the gun in subsequent shots is found to be better than 10%, and the gun-to-gun difference is less than 15%. Assuming a symmetry of eight guns, the contour maps of the electron plasma density are plotted as functions of time. The plasma density becomes maximum near the gun nozzle and near the inner coaxial electrode. The plasma density is low in the area between the coaxial electrodes during the early time of the discharge. At a later time, the plasma fills the space between the two guns more uniformly. Still photographs of the plasma luminosity show a good correspondence with the plasma density plots which were taken 10 μs after the discharge initiation. The plasma gun system is designed for use in a 400-kA inductive voltage adder with the inductive energy storage system     

Synthesis of extremely simplified compounds possessing the key pharmacophore units of taxol, phenylisoserine and oxetane moieties.

Straight chain compounds having a phenylisoserine unit and an oxetane ring at the alpha- and omega- position, respectively as extremely simplified analogues of taxol were prepared. None of these compounds showed promising tubulin inhibitory activity.
