Image printing on the surface of anti-biofouling zwitterionic polymer brushes by ion beam irradiation

A CMB monomer was polymerized on a glass plate with a surface-confined ATRP initiator containing a 2-bromoisobutyryl group. The glass plate modified with a PCMB brush was highly hydrophilic and showed a strong resistance against non-specific adsorption of proteins and cell adhesion. Upon ion beam irradiation, furthermore, the PCMB brush was ablated and a hollow space with a designed shape could be made to which HEK293 cells (from human embryonic kidney) and Hep G2 (from human hepatoma) cells non-specifically adhered, while no adhesion of these cells to the non-treated area on the brush was observed. The present results clearly indicate the usefulness of ion beam-printed patterns of anti-biofouling zwitterionic polymer brushes in the biomedical field.     

On mixed joint discrete universality for a class of zeta-functions. II

We investigate the mixed joint discrete value distribution and the mixed joint discrete universality for the pair consisting of a rather general form of zeta-function with an Euler product and a periodic Hurwitz zeta-function with transcendental parameter. The common differences of relevant arithmetic progressions are not necessarily the same. Also some generalizations are given. For this purpose, certain arithmetic conditions on the common differences are used.

     

Canonical quantization of the electromagnetic field with Dirac's monopoles

From a lagrangian theory of charge-monopole electrodynamics which uses strings but is free from Dirac's veto, a hamiltonian theory is derived which describes the interaction between electric and magnetic point particles and photons.     

Base promoted oxidative decarboxylation of ethyl phenylglycinate via oxaziridine

Base catalyzed decompositions of 2-(α-ethoxycarbonyl-benzyl)-3-phenyl-oxaziridines carried out in benzene in an atmosphere of oxygen yielded N-benzoyl benzamides along with ethyl phenylglyoxylate imine and benzaldehydes.     

High-performance gel filtration of water-soluble samples on polyvinyl alcohol columns

The chromatographic behaviour in aqueous solution of pullulans, polyethylene glycols, peptides and proteins with different molecular weights on newly developed polyvinyl alcohol columns (Asahipak GS column series: GS-310, GS-320, GS-510 and GS-520) has been investigated. Pullulans and polyethylene glycols eluted according to the gel filtration mode, so both series of compounds produced almost equal calibration curves for GS-310 and GS-320 and for GS-510 and GS-520; the exclusion limits on GS-310 and GS-320 and on GS-510 and GS-520 were found to be ca. 40,000 and 300,000, respectively. Peptides and proteins were found to adsorb slightly on the columns. However, the plots of the elution volumes against the logarithm of the molecular weights for many of the substrates tested gave rise to the linear calibration curves. Recovery of several crude proteins was also studied for the columns and high values were obtained (81–100%). The effects of changes in the flow-rate, temperature and concentration of electrolytes added to the eluents, on the retention of all four types of compound are also reported.     

Liftings and Mean Value Theorems for Automorphic L-Functions

A general mean value theorem for Dirichlet series, with a sharperror estimate near the boundary of the critical strip, is proved.Applications of this theorem to various automorphic L-functionsare discussed. Moreover, sharp upper bounds of mean square valuesof L-functions are obtained when they are attached to liftedforms, such as Doi–Naganuma and Ikeda lifts in the theoryof Siegel modular forms. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification11F66, 11M41.     

On the Freeness of 3-Arrangements

Hyperplane arrangements in a three-dimensional vector spaceare considered in this paper. A characterization of the freenessof such an arrangement is given in terms of the characteristicpolynomial and a restricted multiarrangement. Scars in nonintegrable and rational billiards

We numerically study quantum mechanical features of the Bunimovich stadium billiard and the rational billiards which approach the former as the number of their sides increases. The statistics of energy levels and eigenfunctions of the rational billiards becomes indistinguishable from that of the Bunimovich stadium billiard below a certain energy. This fact contradicts the classical picture in which the Bunimovich stadium billiard is chaotic, but the rational billiard is pseudointegrable. It is numerically confirmed that the wave functions do not detect the fine structure, which is much smaller than the wavelength.     

Active motion of a Janus particle by self-thermophoresis in a defocused laser beam

We study self-propulsion of a half-metal coated colloidal particle under laser irradiation. The motion is caused by self-thermophoresis: i.e., absorption of a laser at the metal-coated side of the particle creates local temperature gradient which in turn drives the particle by thermophoresis. To clarify the mechanism, temperature distribution and a thermal slip flow field around a microscale Janus particle are measured for the first time. With measured temperature drop across the particle, the speed of self-propulsion is corroborated with the prediction based on accessible parameters. As an application for driving a micromachine, a microrotor is demonstrated.
