Structures of americanol A and isoamericanol A having a neurotrophic property from the seeds of Phytolacca americana.

The structures of new neo-lignans, isoamericanol A (1) and americanol A (2) isolated from the seeds of Phytolacca americana have been elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data and then confirmed by chemical correlation with the previously known isoamericanin A (3) and americanin A (4). Isoamericanol A, americanol A, and americanin A have been found to enhance choline acetyltransferase activity at 10(-5) M in a cultured neuronal cell system derived from fetal rat hemisphere.     

Liquid chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis for screening of patients with cystinuria, and identification of cystine stone.

Analyses of amino acids in the urine of a normal human and of patients with heterozygous and homozygous cystinuria have been carried out, using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry with an atmospheric pressure ionization interface system. A kidney cystine stone was also analysed by this system. Very intense quasi-molecular ions ([M + H]+) of standard cystine, arginine, lysine and ornithine were observed on mass chromatograms as base peaks. Mass chromatograms of the urine samples from a normal human and from patients with heterozygous and homozygous cystinuria were easily distinguishable. The retention times in the mass chromatogram and mass spectrum of kidney stone cystine was almost the same as that of authentic cystine.     

Regional cerebral blood flow measurement in brain tumors

The regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) was determined on seventeen patients with brain tumors. Ring type single photon emission CT (SPECT) was used following intravenous injection of 133Xe. Case materials included eleven meningiomas and six malignant gliomas. Evaluation was performed with emphasis on the following points; Correlation of the flow data within tumors to the angiographic tumor stains, Influence of tumors on the cerebral blood flow of the normal brain tissue, Correlation between degree of peripheral edema and the flow data of the affected hemispheres. There was significant correlation between flow data within tumors and angiographic tumor stains in meningiomas. Influence of tumors on cerebral blood flow of the normal tissue was greater in meningiomas than in gliomas. There was negative correlation between the degree of peripheral edema and the flow data of the affected hemisphere. It has been concluded that the measurement of CBF in brain tumors is a valuable method in evaluation of brain tumors.

Radiation-induced emission from golden hamster embryo cells

Emission from high-energy-electron-irradiated golden hamster embryo (GHE) cells has been studied over the temperature range 12–300 K both by a one-shot-single-photon-counting method and by photocurrent measurements with an oscilloscope. Emission from the irradiated phosphate buffered saline (PBS) also has been studied. The emission spectra from PBS at 12 and 77 K show a maximum around 330 and 380 nm, respectively, which are the same spectra as those from irradiated pure H₂O. The emission from irradiated GHE consists of the new band at 480 nm in addition to the emission from H₂O. The 480 nm emission is observed at the temperature range of 12–300 K, though the emission at 300 K is much lower than that at low temperature. The 480 nm emission is ascribed to the transition from excited organic substances in GHE cells. The intensity of 480 nm emission at 300 K increases linearly with increasing irradiation-dose in the range of 11–600 Gy.     

Synthesis of ladder polymers containing polydiacetylene backbones connected with methylene chains and their optical properties

The polymers consisting of polydiacetylene (PDA) backbones were obtained from the novel monomer derivatives, R CC CC R′ CC CC R [where R =  (CH₂)₄OCONHCH₂COOC₄H₉, R′ =  (CH₂)_n ; n = 2, 4, 8] [4BCMU4A(n)], in which linear methylene chain is sandwiched between two diacetylene moieties by solid-state 1,4-addition reaction. The polymerization process was investigated in detail by using spectroscopic techniques such as solid-state ¹³C-NMR, visible absorption, and IR absorption spectra. It was estimated that the polymerization of 4BCMU4A(8) and 4BCMU4A(4) takes place by two consecutive 1,4-addition reactions to form two PDA backbones, which constitute the two poles of the respective ladders. The bridging methylene chain length in the monomer was found to play a vital role as far as the polymerization process is concerned. Thus, the monomers with eight or four methylene units could form the ladder–PDAs by a two-step process, whereas the monomer containing two methylene units could only undergo one-step of 1,4-addition reaction. Further, it was found that the crystallinity of the polymers depends on the methylene chain length in the monomers, 4BCMU4A(8) being the most crystalline of all. These structural features strongly affect their absorption spectra. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities (χ⁽³⁾) for these polymers were measured using third-harmonic generation method. Lipase‐Catalyzed Dynamic Kinetic Resolution of C1‐ and C2‐Symmetric Racemic Axially Chiral 2,2′‐Dihydroxy‐1,1′‐biaryls

We have discovered that the racemization of configurationally stable, axially chiral 2,2′‐dihydroxy‐1,1′‐biaryls proceeds with a catalytic amount of a cyclopentadienylruthenium(II) complex at 35–50 °C. Combining this racemization procedure with lipase‐catalyzed kinetic resolution led to the first lipase/metal‐integrated dynamic kinetic resolution of racemic axially chiral biaryl compounds. The method was applied to the synthesis of various enantio‐enriched C₁‐ and C₂‐symmetric biaryl diols in yields of up to 98 % and enantiomeric excesses of up to 98 %, which paves the way for new developments in the field of asymmetric synthesis.     

Calorimetric Investigation of Conversion to The Most Stable Subgel Phase of Phosphatidylethanolamine-water System

The conversion of either the gel or the liquid crystal phase to the most stable subgel phase in dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE)-water system at a water content of 25 mass% was studied by differential scanning calorimetry and isothermal calorimetry. The calorimetric experiments were performed for two samples depending on whether the thermal treatment of cooling to -60°C was adopted or not. In DSC of varying heating rate, exothermic peaks due to the partial conversion were observed at either temperatures just below the gel-to-liquid crystal phase transition at 50°C or temperatures where the liquid crystal phase is present as a metastable state. The enthalpies of conversion for both the gel and the liquid crystal phase were measured directly by the isothermal calorimetries at 47 and 53°C, respectively, where the exothermic peaks were observed by DSC and were compared with the enthalpy difference between the gel and subgel phases and that between the liquid crystal and subgel phases.
