Constructing fair sports league schedules with regard to strength groups

A single round robin tournament (SRRT) consists of n teams and a set of periods. Matches between the teams have to be scheduled such that each team plays against each other team exactly once and each team plays at most once per period. In order to establish fairness among teams, we consider a partition of the teams into strength groups. Then, the goal is to avoid matches where a team plays against extremely weak or extremely strong teams in consecutive periods. In this paper, we pick up two concepts ensuring different degrees of fairness and address several questions which remained open so far.

This communication describes the synthesis of 7-one (7H) cyclohepta[b]pyridine and some derivatives (6,8-dimethyl; 8-methyl; 8-ethyl….). These compounds have been obtained by condensation of ketones with 2,3-diformylpyridine.     

Optimization of an isotope dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method for the detection of endogenous estrogen metabolites in urine samples

A gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) method for the simultaneous quantitation of ten estrogen metabolites in human urine was optimized. The method consists of initial enzymatic hydrolysis of the estrogen conjugates using beta-glucuronidase followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE) on Sep-pak C18 columns and further sample purification by ion-exchange chromatography on QAE-Sephadex cartridges in the acetate form. QAE-Sephadex cartridges in the borate form were used to separate estrogens into two fractions: one fraction containing estrogens lacking vicinal cis-hydroxyls (Fr 1) and another containing estrogens possessing vicinal cis-hydroxyls (catecholestrogens; Fr 2). Finally, following O-trimethylsilyl ether derivatization, the estrogens were analyzed by GC/MS in the selected ion monitoring mode. Estrogens were quantitated using deuterated internal standards, which were added to the samples at the initiation of the work-up procedures. After addition to estrogen-low male human samples the standards showed good chromatographic linear response and reproducibility. A reduction in the number of steps and improvements in the robustness of the work-up procedures were achieved. The modified method described is less complex, amenable to use with commercially available SPE columns and fulfils all the reliability criteria, resulting in highly specific and accurate results.

Bipolar electrode depletion: membraneless filtration of charged species using an electrogenerated electric field gradient

We report a method for removing ions from aqueous solutions without the use of a membrane. The approach, which we call bipolar electrode depletion (BED), is based on the formation of an asymmetric electric field profile in a microchannel containing a bipolar electrode (BPE). The asymmetric field arises from local increases in conductivity caused by faradaic reactions at the BPE. We show how the asymmetric field can be used to deplete anions from a microchannel via a combination of electrophoresis and electroosmosis. We also apply this approach to filter an anionic species from a mixture of charged and neutral species being transported through a microchannel via electroosmosis. This technique could be utilized for desalination or filtration of any species possessing a net charge (e.g. heavy-metals, bacteria, proteins, or functionalized-nanoparticles).     

Loading,unloading and premarshalling of stacks in storage areas: Survey and classification

Problems of loading, unloading and premarshalling of stacks as well as combinations thereof appear in several practical applications, e.g. container terminals, container ship stowage planning, tram depots or steel industry. Although these problems seem to be different at first sight, they hold plenty of similarities. To precisely unite all aspects, we suggest a classification scheme and show how problems existing in literature can be described with it. Furthermore, we give an overview of known complexity results and solution approaches.     

Lower Bounds for Scheduling a Single Robot in a Job-Shop Environment

We consider a single-machine scheduling problem which arises as a subproblem in a job-shop environment where the jobs have to be transported between the machines by a single transport robot. The robot scheduling problem may be regarded as a generalization of the traveling salesman problem with time windows, where additionally generalized precedence constraints (minimal time-lags) have to be respected. The objective is to determine a sequence of all nodes and corresponding starting times in the given time windows in such a way that all generalized precedence relations are respected and the sum of all traveling and waiting times is minimized.We calculate lower bounds for this problem using constraint propagation techniques and a linear programming formulation which is solved by a column generation procedure. Computational results are presented for test data arising from job-shop instances with a single transport robot and some modified traveling salesman instances.     

The effect of topical anesthesia on vocal fold motion

The objective of this study was to determine if topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx affects vocal fold motion during dynamic voice evaluation with transnasal flexible endoscopy. Transnasal dynamic laryngeal examinations of 10 patients with no voice complaints were evaluated by five blinded fellowship-trained laryngologists. Each patient was examined before and after application of topical anesthetic. Reviewers rated briskness of right and left vocal fold movement and longitudinal tension on a visual analogue scale. Statistical comparisons were made between individual subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Inter-rater reliability was also assessed. No statistical difference was observed between subject scores before and after anesthetic application. Average intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.643 and 0.591 for pre- and postanesthesia scores, respectively. Application of topical anesthesia to the larynx and pharynx does not affect vocal fold motion.     

Complexity Results for Flow-Shop and Open-Shop Scheduling Problems with Transportation Delays

We consider shop problems with transportation delays where not only the jobs on the machines have to be scheduled, but also transportation of the jobs between the machines has to be taken into account. Jobs consisting of a given number of operations have to be processed on machines in such a way that each machine processes at most one operation at a time and a job is not processed by more than one machine simultaneously. Transportation delays occur if a job changes from one machine to another. The objective is to find a feasible schedule which minimizes some objective function. A survey of known complexity results for flow-shop and open-shop environments is given and some new complexity results are derived.     

Scheduling chains with identical jobs and constant delays on a single machine

In this paper we study the single-machine problem 1|chains(l), p _j = p|∑ C _j in which jobs with constant processing times and generalized precedence constraints in form of chains with constant delays are given. One has to schedule the jobs on a single machine such that all delays between consecutive jobs in a chain are satisfied and the sum of all completion times of the jobs is minimized.
