The effect of sulfur adsorption on the step structure of vicinal Mo(100) surfaces has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). STM was used for low densities of steps on a nominally flat (100) surface. LEED was used to study the more highly and regularly stepped (910), (911), and (28,4,1) oriented surfaces. Steps and the sulfur adsorbate were found to have a strong interaction. The presence and orientation of steps on the surface governed the formation of ordered domains of sulfur, and sulfur modified the structure of the steps on the surface. Both techniques show that monatomic steps predominate on the clean surfaces. When sulfur was adsorbed on the surfaces, however, steps coalesced to form groups of steps, double atomic height steps, and multiple height steps, depending on sulfur coverage and initial step density. The results are discussed in the framework of the theory of equilibrium crystal shape and provide information on how the Mo step-step interactions are affected by sulfur adsorption.  相似文献

Poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) are emerging as promising materials for a wide range of biomedical applications due to their potential for both hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, as well as the ease with which their properties can be tuned by the choice of monomers. The incorporation of pendant functional handles along the PEA backbone has the potential to further expand their applications by allowing the charge and hydrophilicity of the polymers to be altered, and facilitating the conjugation of active molecules such as drugs, targeting groups, and cell signaling molecules. Described here is a simple and versatile strategy based on orthogonal protecting groups, by which L ‐lysine and L‐ aspartic acid can be incorporated into several families of PEAs based on monomers including the diacids succinic and terephthalic acid, the diols 1,4‐butanediol and 1,8‐octanediol, and the amino acids L‐ alanine and L‐ phenylalanine. All polymers were thoroughly characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was demonstrated that the side chain protecting groups could be readily removed, allowing the pendant amines or carboxylic acids to be functionalized. In particular, the carboxylic acid groups on a polymer containing L‐ aspartic acid units were converted to N‐hydroxysuccinimidyl esters, providing a useful template for further derivatization. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present the first direct measurements of spatially and temporally resolved temperature and density profiles produced by nonlocal transport in a laser plasma. Absolutely calibrated measurements have been performed by Rayleigh scattering and by resolving the ion-acoustic wave spectra across the plasma volume with Thomson scattering. We find that the electron temperature and density profiles disagree with flux-limited models, but are consistent with nonlocal transport modeling.  相似文献

We present an economical dynamical control scheme to perform quantum computation on a one-dimensional optical lattice, where each atom encodes one qubit. The model is based on atom tunneling transitions between neighboring sites of the lattice. They can be activated by external laser beams resulting in a two-qubit phase gate or in an exchange interaction. A realization of the Toffoli gate is presented, which requires only a single laser pulse and no individual atom addressing.  相似文献

Pure rotational stimulated Raman scattering spectra containing nine strong spectral components were generated from a approximately 11 m long hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with hydrogen and pumped with nanosecond pulses having energies around 100-300 nJ. Observation of both transient and steady-state scattering threshold behavior is reported. Passage from the transient to the steady state is observed with a pulse as long as 14 ns. Convenient analytical expressions for energy and power threshold are deduced for the present configuration.  相似文献

Scattering of a dispersive wave by optical solitons is studied experimentally in photonic crystal fibers in cases when the soliton and the dispersive wave have either identical or orthogonal polarization states. Observations of new resonant frequencies are reported. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations and predictions from the recently derived wave vector matching conditions.  相似文献

Two fluid turbulence models, the drift wave based quasilinear 1.5D Weiland model and the electromagnetic global 3D nonlinear model CUTIE, have been used to account for heat pinch evidence in off-axis modulated electron cyclotron heating experiments in the Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project. Both models reproduce the main features indicating inward heat convection in mildly off-axis cases. In far-off-axis cases with hollow electron temperature profiles, the existence of outward convection was reproduced only by CUTIE. Turbulence mechanisms driving heat convection in the two models are discussed.  相似文献

We report a strongly anisotropic photonic crystal fiber. Twofold rotational symmetry was introduced into a single-mode fiber structure by creation of a regular array of airholes of two sizes disposed about a pure-silica core. Based on spectral measurements of the polarization mode beating, we estimate that the fiber has a beat length of approximately 0.4 mm at a wavelength of 1540 nm, in good agreement with the results of modeling.  相似文献
