Under an external magnetic field, new branches of spin- and charge-density waves have been studied in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system whose ground state has more than one Landau level occupied by electrons. The energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron system in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field and a weak lateral superlattice potential with square symmetry is composed of Landau bands with recursive internal subband structure. The Hall conductance in the minigaps is anticipated to be quantized in integer multiples of e(2)/h that vary erratically from minigap to minigap in accordance with a Diophantine equation. Hall measurements on samples with the requisite properties uncover this long searched for evidence of Hofstadter's butterflylike energy spectrum. 相似文献

We demonstrate an interference method to determine the low-energy elastic scattering amplitudes of a quantum gas. We linearly accelerate two ultracold atomic clouds up to energies of 1.2 mK and observe the collision halo by direct imaging in free space. From the interference between s- and d- partial waves in the differential scattering pattern we extract the corresponding phase shifts. The method does not require knowledge of the atomic density. This allows us to infer accurate values for the s- and d-wave scattering amplitudes from the zero-energy limit up to the first Ramsauer minimum using only the van der Waals C6 coefficient as theoretical input. For the 87Rb triplet potential, the method reproduces the scattering length with an accuracy of 6%. 相似文献

Polyglycerol nanogels (nPG) have a huge impact in biomedical applications as drug deliverer due to their high biocompability. For such nPG nanogels, particle degradation is widely used as drug delivery method. The knowledge of this degradation process is limited up to date. In this communication, a real time visualization of such a degradation process is presented for pH‐responsive nPG nanogels via atomic force microscopy (AFM) under ambient and in liquid conditions. The particle height plays a major role in the degradation process and decays exponentially in the beginning of this process. The particle width increases during the process indicating a “decross‐linking” step of the particles into their starting monomers. Measurements under ambient conditions confirm this assumption and provide further insight in the “decross‐linking” step of the nanogels into individual dendritic particles. The present work gives a detailed insight in the particle degradation process, which is essential for further progress for the development of new drug delivery systems.

This study addresses the effect of ionic strength and type of ions on the structure and water content of polyelectrolyte multilayers. Polyelectrolyte multilayers of poly(sodium-4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) and poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) prepared at different NaF, NaCl and NaBr concentrations have been investigated by neutron reflectometry against vacuum, H(2)O and D(2)O. Both thickness and water content of the multilayers increase with increasing ionic strength and increasing ion size. Two types of water were identified, "void water" which fills the voids of the multilayers and does not contribute to swelling but to a change in scattering length density and "swelling water" which directly contributes to swelling of the multilayers. The amount of void water decreases with increasing salt concentration and anion radius while the amount of swelling water increases with salt concentration and anion radius. This is interpreted as a denser structure in the dry state and larger ability to swell in water (sponge) for multilayers prepared from high ionic strengths and/or salt solution of large anions. No exchange of hydration water or replacement of H by D was detected even after eight hours incubation time in water of opposing isotopic composition. 相似文献

A novel, simple, and very efficient method to prepare hydrophobically modified gold particles is presented. Gold nanoparticles of different sizes and polydispersities were prepared. The diameter of the gold particles ranges from 5 to 37 nm. All systems were prepared in aqueous solution stabilized by citrate and afterwards transferred into an organic phase by using amphiphilic alkylamine ligands with different alkyl chain lengths. The chain length was varied between 8 and 18 alkyl groups. Depending on the particle size and the alkylamine, different transfer efficiencies were obtained. In some cases, the phase transfer has a yield of about 100%. After drying, the particles can be redispersed in different organic solvents. Characterization of the particles before and after transfer was performed by using UV/Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The effect of organic solvents with various refractive indices on the plasmon band position was investigated. 相似文献

The review addresses swelling of polyelectrolyte multilayers in water. Different models for the determination of the water content are compared. It is clearly shown that voids under dry conditions present cavities for water which contribute to the water content of the multilayer in the swollen state. This so-called “void water” does not lead to any changes in thickness but in scattering length density during swelling. The “swelling water” leads to both changes in scattering length density and in thickness. Depending on the preparation conditions like the type polymers, polymer charge density, ionic strength and type of salt the ratio of “void water” differs between 1 and 15 vol.% while the amount of “swelling water” is of several ten's of vol.%. 相似文献

We investigate the quantum Hall stripe phase at filling factor 9/2 at the microscopic level by probing the dispersion of its collective modes with the help of surface acoustic waves with wavelengths down to 60 nm. The dispersion is strongly anisotropic. It is highly dispersive and exhibits a roton minimum for wave vectors aligned along the easy transport direction. In the perpendicular direction, however, the dispersion is featureless, although not flat as predicted by theory. Oscillatory behavior in the absorption intensity of the collective mode with a wave vector perpendicular to the stripes is attributed to a commensurability effect. It allows us to extract the periodicity of the quantum Hall stripes. 相似文献

The spectra of edge magnetoplasma excitations in two-dimensional (2D) electron disks have been analyzed by the method of optical detection of resonant microwave absorption. The magnetic dispersion of an edge magnetoplasmon in samples with a high 2D electron density is found to be poorly reproduced by existing theoretical models. Analysis of the magnetic-field dependence of the linewidth of resonant microwave absorption for samples with various 2D electron densities shows that the inverse width of the main mode of resonant microwave absorption is universally proportional to the Hall resistance of 2D electrons. 相似文献
