Nuclear orbiting and anomalies in nuclear reactions

In this paper, we report our measurements of back-angle oxygen and carbon particle yields from ¹⁶O+⁸⁹Y, ¹²C+⁹³Nb reactions forming the same compound nucleus ¹⁰⁵Ag at the same excitation energy and spin distribution. We find anomalously large oxygen yield and entrance channel dependence at high excitation energies from ¹⁶O+⁸⁹Y reaction implying formation of a dinuclear orbiting complex. Possible connection between nuclear orbiting and fast fission is also discussed.     

Parallel, solution phase synthesis of dihydropyridine miticides via a versatile multicomponent reaction

A novel class of highly active dihydropyridine miticides was prepared using a multicomponent reaction process. The initial lead was rapidly optimized using solution phase parallel synthesis techniques and a positional scanning approach. Detailed structure-activity relationships were developed for the amino and carbonyl components of the molecule and used to select the best candidates for broad field testing. The chemistry, biology and toxicology of these compounds will be presented along with numerous structural variants of the reaction products.     

Phase and group velocity considerations for dynamic modulus measurement in anisotropic media

In anisotropic media, the direction of energy propagation does not necessarily coincide with the wave normal, i.e. the energy flux vector does not coincide with the wave normal. Since, experimentally, one measures group velocity not phase velocity, one must therefore be careful in interpreting ultrasonic wave speed measurements in anisotropic media. This is of particular importance in elastic property reconstruction where acoustic velocity measurements are used as the basis for determining anisotropic material properties. In this work, the consequences of energy flux deviation from the wave normal are considered for typical experimental geometries. Particular attention is devoted to developing appropriate relationships between the phase velocity and ultrasonic transit time measurements, as these relations are most useful for elastic property reconstruction. In all the cases considered, it is shown that the phase velocity can be directly calculated from appropriate time delay measurements.     

Single-strand strainwire technique: Extensions and refinements

This paper is the first of three papers on a refined internal strainwire technique. Availability of sensitive data-acquisition equipment has made possible a detailed investigation that resulted in reductions in both gage length and excitation voltage with little reduction in the quality of the information. The method of measuring internal strains by embedded lengths of strain-gage wire has been extended to the construction and evaluation of strain rosettes. Experimentally measured principal strains on an interior plane of a compressed square prism are comared for statistical and theoretical consistency.     

Experimental investigation of large-volume PIA plasmas atatmospheric pressure

Large-volume atmospheric-pressure plasmas have been the subject of previous research as a laboratory simulation of ball lightning, but measurements of the plasma properties have been unavailable. The present investigation employed a non-resonant microwave chamber with a 1000-W microwave-source operating at 2.45-GHz frequency to produce large volume (up to 0.8 L) plasmas that persisted after microwave shutoff. A Langmuir probe was used to measure electron density and temperature, and the highest values measured were 10¹⁰ cm^-3 at 0.67 eV, respectively. Plasma lifetimes after microwave shutoff were also measured, using both a photocell and a video camera, and were found to average 200 ms. A working hypothesis of the formation of shared electron orbitals in dense gas discharges is put forth to explain this phenomenon
