Zur colorimetrischen Bestimmung von Rheniumspuren

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, daß mit Hilfe von Fuchsin eine colorimetrische Bestimmung von Rhenium in Mengen von 1–10 g mit einer Standardabweichung von 0,1 g möglich ist. Ein Abtrennungsverfahren, bestehend aus Sublimation des Rheniums und dessen Extraktion mit Tetraphenylarsoniumchlorid gestattet die Anwendung der colorimetrischen Methode zur Erfassung von Rheniumgehalten von 10^–1 bis 10^–4% in Mineralien und technischen Produkten.Herrn Prof. Geilmann und Herrn Prof. Bock danke ich für anregende Diskussionen. Characterisation of humic substances using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry combined with size-exclusion chromatography

Humic substances were analysed by atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) and electrospray ionisation (ESI) mass spectrometry in positive and negative modes. Using APCI the average m/z range of humic substances was reduced 5-fold compared to ESI. High-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry revealed the formation of multiply charged molecules in the ESI mode. Moreover, it was possible to obtain daughter ion mass spectra of humic substances by nanospray tandem mass spectrometry. The size-exclusion chromatography elution profile of humic substances was highly influenced by the pH of the analyte solution. By contrast, the pH had no significant influence on the observed mass spectra of humic substances.     

Cyclotomic units over finite fields

Let ζ be a primitivesp-th root of unity for a primep>2, and consider the group Ω(ζ) of cyclotomic units in the ringR(ζ)=ℒ[ζ+ζ^-1]. This paper deals with the image of Ω(ζ) in the unit group ofR(ζ)/qR(ζ), whereq is a prime ≠p. In particular, it obtains criteria for this image to be essentially everything, and a lower bound on the density of primesp (withq fixed) for which it cannot be. These results have a direct bearing on previous work about units in integral group rings for cyclic groups of orderpq. Work supported in part by an operating grant from NSERC (Canada).     

Almost block independence and bernoullicity of ℤ d -actions by automorphisms of compact abelian groups

Summary We prove that a ^d -action by automorphisms of a compact, abelian group is Bernoulli if and only if it has completely positive entropy. The key ingredients of the proof are the extension of certain notions of asymptotic block independence from -actions to ^d -action and their equivalence with Bernoullicity, and a surprisingly close link between one of these asymptotic block independence properties for ^d -actions by automorphisms of compact, abelian groups and the product formula for valuations on global fields.Oblatum 20-X-1994     

2d-CUSUM for the detection of tendencies inherent in noisy bivariate data

Noisy analytical data dependent on 2 different variables (bivariate data) can be evaluated by an extended (2-dimensional) CUSUM-algorithm. Even at very high random fluctuations this 2d-CUSUM allows to detect long-term instationarities even from short series of measurements. The model of 2d-CUSUM as well as examples (distribution analysis, time-series analysis, treatment of calibration functions) are shown in this paper.Dedicated to Professor Dr. R. Development of a very low energy μ+ beam at PSI

At PSI we are investigating the technique of decelerating an existing very intense secondary beam of surface ⁺ (4 MeV) to an energy of 10 eV using appropriate moderators. These ⁺ can then be used as a source of a tertiary beam of low energy muons with tunable kinetic energy between 10 eV and 10 keV.With a 1000 A layer of solid Argon deposited on an Al substrate we obtain a moderation efficiency (with respect to the number of incoming surface ⁺) of the order of 10^–4.Results of our investigations and the present status of the project are presented together with future plans and possibilities.     

Observation of the early stages of growth and the formation of growth spirals in epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ thin films by AFM

Ultrathin epitaxial films of YBa₂Cu₃O_7– on SrTiO₃ prepared by Direct Current (DC) sputtering and pulsed laser deposition were imaged by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to follow the different stages of growth of the thin films. Series of films with thicknesses between 1.2 nm and 12 nm (1–10 monolayers of YBa₂Cu₃O_7–) were prepared under identical conditions, optimized with respect to electrical and structural properties, to obtain information on the mechanisms responsible for the formation of growth spirals which are commonly observed in films having a thickness of several 10 nm or more. It could be shown that few layers are formed by a layered growth mode where material is attached laterally to 2D islands which are only one c-axis unit cell in height. In a later stage of growth when about 8–10 layers have been formed, the growth process changes to a mode which is mediated by growth spirals. This could be directly monitored in the AFM images where different defect structures like vertically sheared growth fronts and dendrite-like terraces of stacked islands as well as the resulting growth spirals could be identified.     

On Liouville decompositions in local fields

In 1962 Erd\H{o}s proved that every real number may be decomposed into a sum of Liouville numbers. Here we consider more general functions which decompose elements from an arbitrary local field into Liouville numbers. Several examples and applications are given. As an illustration, we prove that for any real numbers , not equal to 0 or 1, there exist uncountably many Liouville numbers such that are all Liouville numbers.

     

AES investigations of the iron surface composition after laser irradiation under atmospheric conditions

The laser induced modification of iron surfaces with atmospheric species was investigated by means of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Different laser systems were used for irradiating iron samples in a wide range of the laser processing parameters up to small foci and ultra short pulses.A nitriding of iron connected with an oxidation of the near surface region was observed in the wavelength range between 193 nm and 10.6 m using large foci (0.1 cm²) and short pulses (10...1400ns). In case of small foci (7·10^–6cm²) with ns-pulses (50 ns) an enrichment of the iron melt with nitrogen and an advanced oxidation of the surrounding area of the laser spot were detected. When using shorter pulses (200 fs, 40 ps) no indications for a nitriding were found.
