Mesostructured organosilica with a 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium bridging unit: photoinduced charge separation in the organosilica framework

Polycondensation of 9-mesityl-10-methylacridinium-bridged organosilane in the presence of a nonionic surfactant yielded a mesostructured organosilica solid with a functional framework that exhibited long-lived photoinduced charge separation.     

Experimental observation of the bifurcation dynamics of an intrinsic localized mode in a driven 1D nonlinear lattice

Linear response spectra of a driven intrinsic localized mode in a micromechanical array are measured as it approaches two fundamentally different kinds of bifurcation points. A linear phase mode associated with this autoresonant state softens in frequency and its amplitude grows as the upper frequency bifurcation point is approached, similar to the soft-mode kinetic transition for a single driven Duffing resonator. A lower frequency bifurcation point occurs when the four-wave-mixing partner of this same phase mode intercepts the top of the extended wave branch, initiating a second kinetic transition process.     

The gonality sequence of a curve with an involution

If a curve X of genus g is a double covering of a curve C of genus h such that g ≥ 6h?3 ≥ 9, there is an explicit relation between the gonality sequences of X and C. In particular, it shows that X violates the slope inequalities if and only if C does. This provides new examples of curves X violating the slope inequalities.     

Eigenvalue distributions in matrix models for Chern-Simons-matter theories

The eigenvalue distribution is investigated for matrix models related via the localization to Chern-Simons-matter theories. An integral representation of the planar resolvent is used to derive the positions of the branch points of the planar resolvent in the large ?t Hooft coupling limit. Various known exact results on eigenvalue distributions and the expectation value of Wilson loops are reproduced.     

Synthesis of carbazole‐based light‐emitting polymers incorporating 2,5‐bis(phenylethenyl)‐4‐decyloxyanisole as collateral fluorophore

The Suzuki coupling polymerization between bis(carbazole) monomer ( CzDB ) and 9,9‐dihexylfluorene‐2,7‐diboronic acid was carried out to obtain PFCz‐PEDA0 having the number‐averaged molecular weight of 7000. The absorption and emission maximum wavelengths were observed at 344 and 408 nm, respectively. The quantum yield (QY) was relatively low (0.12) because of the photo‐induced electron transfer. Subsequently, CzPEDA ‐bearing 2,5‐bis(phenylethenyl)‐4‐decyloxyanisole (PEDA) segment sandwiched with 3‐bromocarbazole units was copolymerized to give PFCz‐PEDAn (n = 05, 10, 20, 35, and 50). The content of PEDA segment in polymer could be controlled by the monomer feed ratio. In CHCl₃ solution, the absorbance at around 400 nm became larger with one isosbestic point at 370 nm, and the emission peak at 448 nm became prominent with increasing the PEDA content. The QY of polymer was increased as the PEDA content, which was a consequence of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer from carbazole‐containing chromophore (energy donor) to PEDA fluorophore (energy acceptor). In spin‐coated film, the maximum QY was obtained in PFCz‐PEDA05 having the most appropriate molar balance of energy donor and acceptor units. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Communication: Synthetic Studies on Sialoglycoconjugates 25: Reactivity of Glycosyl Promoters in α-Glycosylation of N-Acetyl-Neuraminic Acid with the Primary and Secondary Hydroxyl Groups in the Suitably Protected Galactose and Lactose Derivatives

Development of an efficient α-glycoside synthesis of sialic acids is critically significant for the syntheses of sialoglycoconjugates, especially gangliosides which carry important biological functions¹ in biological systems. Previously, we demonstrated² a new α-glycosylation of sialic acids by use of dimethyl(methylthio)sulfonium triflate (DMTST)³ as the glycosyl promoter, the suitably protected glycosyl acceptors and the methyl 2-thioglycoside 1 of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) as the donor in acetonitrile under kinetically controlled conditions, and accomplished⁴ the syntheses of a variety of gangliosides and their analogs.     

Manifolds of almost nonnegative curvature

Angioarchitecture of tumors induced by two different cloned cell lines established from a transplantable rat malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

Angiogenesis, a biologic process whereby endothelial cells divide and migrate to form new blood vessels, is a key step in tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. In the present study, we investigated the differences in angioarchitecture between two different tumors induced by cloned cell lines (MT-8 and MT-9), derived from a transplantable rat malignant fibrous histiocytoma, by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts. During a 3-week observation period after implantation, the growth of MT-8 tumors appeared to be faster than that of MT-9 tumors. Histologically, MT-8 tumors were of the uniformly undifferentiated sarcoma type arranged in characteristic organoid structures, and MT-9 tumors showed a storiform growth pattern. In MT-8 tumors, neovascularization occurred by sprouting at postimplantation (PI) week 1, and the newly formed capillaries gradually became more tortuous. In MT-9 tumors, at PI week 1, the corrosion casts of newly formed capillaries mainly showed a wavy course but no finger-like outgrowths of capillaries were seen. At PI weeks 2 and 3, the sprouting was seen specifically in MT-9 tumors, forming basket-like structures and glomeruloid structures of capillaries. These results indicate that angiogenesis or angioarchitecture of MT-8 tumors is different from that of MT-9 tumors, depending on the differences in their tumor histology and by the features like absence or presence of basket-like structures and glomeruloid structures of capillaries.     

Chaotic Vibrations of a Cylindrical Shell-Panel with an In-Plane Elastic-Support at Boundary

This paper presents numerical results on chaotic vibrations of a shallow cylindrical shell-panel under harmonic lateral excitation. The shell, with a rectangular boundary, is simply supported for deflection and the shell is constrained elastically in an in-plane direction. Using the Donnell--Mushtari--Vlasov equation, modified with an inertia force, the basic equation is reduced to a nonlinear differential equation of a multiple-degree-of-freedom system by the Galerkin procedure. To estimate regions of the chaos, first, nonlinear responses of steady state vibration are calculated by the harmonic balance method. Next, time progresses of the chaotic response are obtained numerically by the Runge--Kutta--Gill method. The chaos accompanied with a dynamic snap-through of the shell is identified both by the Lyapunov exponent and the Poincaré projection onto the phase space. The Lyapunov dimension is carefully examined by increasing the assumed modes of vibration. The effects of the in-plane elastic constraint on the chaos of the shell are discussed.
