Piezoelectric relaxation in poly(γ-methyl-L-glutamate) at high temperature

Piezoelectric relaxation has been studied on elongated poly(γ-methyl-L-glutamate) films with the α-helical molecular conformation. Relaxation processes are observed near 0 and 100°C. Each process has a dual character composed of relaxational and retardational frequency dependences. The low-temperature process is ascribed to thermal motion of side chains. The high-temperature process, discussed in relation to the dielectric relaxation, is attributed to the ionic dc conduction connected with the two-phase structure of crystalline regions and the electrode polarization.     

Topological classification of unknotted ring defects

Unknotted ring defects in ordered media are classified in terms of the homotopy theory. It is also investigated what type of point defects will appear when a radius of the ring defect tends to zero.     

Copper(I) nitrile complexes,part III. Reversible olefin complex formation with acetonitrilecopper(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate

Summary Acetonitrilecopper(I) trifluoromethanesulfonate, CuTAN, reversibly forms liquid olefin complexes of composition olefin:CuTAN and olefin: (CuTAN)₂. The complex formation constants of CuTAN with cyclohexene in anisole have been studied based on the observation that CuTAN exists as a dimer in anisole.     

Parity violation in helium and cesium and the effect of electron-electron interaction

We investigate the parity violating effect in helium and cesium atoms due to the exchange of a Z⁰-meson between atomic electrons. It is found that this effect is negligible for both atoms in comparison with the contribution from the electron-nucleus interactions, if we take the neutral-current coupling between electrons as predicted by the SU (2) × U (1) theory and sin²θ_W ≈ 0.3.     

The effects of pH and ions on myelin figure formation in phospholipid-water system

Myelin figures were found to form at the main phase transition temperatures of several phospholipids for various ph values and Ca²⁺ concentrations. The optical observation of myelin figure formation provides a simple method of detecting the phase transition of phospholipids.     

Further studies on the ultraviolet graft copolymerization of maleimide by vapor-phase method

Graft copolymerization of maleimide onto polyethylene and ethyl cellulose films by using its sublimation vapor was carried out under ultraviolet irradiation in the presence or absence of air; the effect of air or additives on the grafting reaction and on the nature of the grafted films was investigated. The extent of grafting gradually approached a fixed value, in spite of the continuous ultraviolet irradiation. Air retarded the grafting reaction but did not suppress the reaction nor alter the final extent of grafting. Benzoquinone showed no inhibiting effect on the grafting. The grafted polymaleimide was found to be amorphous, even though ultraviolet irradiation produces a highly crystalline homopolymer in the solid phase as well as in the liquid phase. The results were discussed in comparison with those of the vapor-phase grafting under γ-ray irradiation; the reaction is attributed to the vapor–crystal equilibrium of monomer and to the formation of short-chain crosslinks.     

Thermal formation of triphenodithiazinequinone and triphenodiselenazinequinone

Thermal treatment of 2, 5-bis(2-thioanisidino)-3, 6-dichloro-1, 4-benzoquinone and its selenium derivative brought about demethylchlorination to give triphenodithiazinequinone and triphenodiselenazinequinone, respectively.     

Flow-injection determination of adenosine and inosine in blood plasma with immobilized enzyme columns connected in series and fluorimetric detection

A rapid and sensitive flow-injection method is described for the enzymatic determination of adenosine and inosine in human blood plama. Teflon columns prepared by packing adenosine deaminase. purine nucleoside phosphorylase, xanthine oxidase, uricase and horseradish peroxidase immobilized chemically on controlled-pore glass beads are connected in series in that order in the flow line. Hydrogen peroxide formed in the enzymatic conversion of adenosine and inosine is measured fluorimetrically after reaction with 3-(p-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid. Linear calibrations were obtained for 0.5–500 pmol of adenosine or inosine in hte 20 μl sample injected. Necessary deproteination routines are outlined.     

Magnetic field dependence of 11B NMR in CeB6

The ¹¹B nuclear magnetic resonance in a dense Kondo system CeB₆ has been observed by the spin echo technique below 4.2 K at fixed frequencies of 2.5, 6.5, 13.33 and 18.00 MHz, which correspond to magnetic fields of 1.83, 4.76, 9.76 and 13.18 KOe for the free ¹¹B nucleus, respectively. The spectra in the phase II appeared to have two peaks in the magnetic field applied in the [111] direction, the spacing of which was found to be very small in zero external field and increased monotonically (up to 0.11 kOe at 2.6 K) with increasing field. On the other hand, the spectra in the phase III were complex. Especially, the spectra observed for [111] at 6.5 MHz were found to spread over 1.9 KOe and to have several peaks. From comparison between the experiments and the dipolar field calculation based on the recent neutron diffraction measurements, possible magnetic structures were examined for the phases II and III.
