Determination of l-lactate by differential pulse polarography with covalently immobilized enzyme on Chitopearl

Summary The covalent bonding of l-lactate oxidase (no E.C.) to cross-linked copolymers of chitosan (Chitopearl) using the glutaraldehyde method is described and applied to the determination of l-lactate in serums of diseased and normal animals. The bioreactor packing of the immobilized enzyme is stable for at least 4 months and can be continuously used for the rapid and simple determination of l-lactate. The reduction current of pyruvate, corresponding to the product of enzymatic reaction, is determined by differential pulse polarography. The reproducibility (RSD) for 10 mol/l l-lactate is 0.78% (n=6) and the detection limit is 0.62 mol/l (k=2, confidence level 97.72%).     

Li ion diffusion in Li4Ti5O12 thin film electrode prepared by PVP sol-gel method

Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ thin films for rechargeable lithium batteries were prepared by a sol-gel method with poly(vinylpyrrolidone). Interfacial properties of lithium insertion into Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ thin film were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT). Redox peaks in CV were very sharp even at a fast scan rate of 50 mV s⁻¹, indicating that Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ thin film had a fast electrochemical response, and that an apparent chemical diffusion coefficient of Li⁺ ion was estimated to be 6.8×10⁻¹¹ cm² s⁻¹ from a dependence of peak current on sweep rates. From EIS, it can be seen that Li⁺ ions become more mobile at 1.55 V vs. Li/Li⁺, corresponding to a two-phase region, and the chemical diffusion coefficients of Li⁺ ion ranged from 10⁻¹⁰ to 10⁻¹² cm² s⁻¹ at various potentials. The chemical diffusion coefficients of Li⁺ ion in Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ were also estimated from PITT. They were in a range of 10⁻¹¹-10⁻¹² cm² s⁻¹.     

Synthesis of 6-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-oxides

Four 6-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-oxides were synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aniline with thionyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine.     

Lannotinidines A-G, new alkaloids from two species of Lycopodium

Seven new Lycopodium alkaloids, lannotinidines A-G (1-7), have been isolated from the club moss Lycopodium annotinum and L. annotinum var. acrifolium. Stereochemistry of 1-7 was elucidated by combination of NOESY correlations and chemical transformation. Lannotinidines B-E (2-5) elevated NGF mRNA expression.     

ALL-trans β-CAROTENE-5,6-EPOXIDE IN THYLAKOID MEMBRANES

All- trans β-carotene-5,6-epoxide has been found in the thylakoid membranes of spinach and of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus vulcanus Copeland. The epoxide was extracted from the thylakoid membranes with acetone, and was isolated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The structure of the epoxide was identified by means of mass, Raman, and electronic absorption spectroscopy. Changes in the amount of the epoxide, as a result of epoxidation and (apparent) de-epoxidation reactions in the membranes, were traced by analysis of extracts on HPLC. In isolated thylakoid membranes, only the epoxidation reaction took place. The reaction was caused by irradiation or by the addition of ferricyanide, suggesting that electron transport reactions in the membranes are involved in the epoxidation. In intact spinach leaves, however, both epoxidation and de-epoxidation took place; the extent of epoxidation correlated with the intensity of light incident on the leaves. The epoxidation and de-epoxidation of all- trans β-carotene are contrasted with those of xanthophylls (in the violaxanthin cycle).     

Benzyne-induced ring opening reaction of thiiranes. Efficient synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfides

A series of thiiranes react with benzyne to provide an efficient synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfides. The reaction is stereospecific, thus producing cis-(phenylthio)-stilbene from cis-2,3-diphenylthiirane and trans-(phenylthio)stilbene from trans-2,3-diphenylthiirane.     

Mass spectrometric studies on gibberellins

Based on the element maps of twenty-two gibberellin methyl esters fragmentations are discussed, which are characteristic of the common structural features as well as structural modification in gibberellin homologues.     

Separation selectivity of anionic metal complexes of N,N'-bis(hydroxybenzyl)ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid in ion and ion electrokinetic chromatography

The complexes of Fe(III), Co(III), Mn(III), Al(III), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) with N,N'-bis(hydroxybenzyl)ethylenediamine-N,N'-diacetic acid (HBED) were separated by ion exchange in different modes: ion chromatography (IC) and ion electrokinetic chromatography (IEKC). In column IC these complexes were separated on an IonPac AS4a anion-exchange column (Dionex, USA). Parameters of the background electrolyte that were examined in IEKC mode include polymer, competing ion concentration and pH. The use of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMACl) as a modifier in IEKC provides separation selectivity only slightly different from that observed in IC on the IonPac AS4a column. Optimal separation conditions were found to be: 0.1 mM HBED, 50 mM PDADMAOH, 10 mM Na2 B4 O7, pH adjusted to 10 with acetic acid. The use of an aromatic ligand allowed a 10-fold decrease in detection limits of metal ions in comparison with previously studied EDTA. A separation efficiency up to 400,000 theoretical plates was demonstrated for IEKC.     

Compressed Corannulene in a Molecular Cage

Self‐assembled coordination cages can be employed as a molecular press, where the bowl‐shaped guest corannulene (C₂₀H₁₀) is significantly flattened upon inclusion within the hydrophobic cavity. This is demonstrated by the pairwise inclusion of corannulene with naphthalene diimide as well as by the dimer inclusion of bromocorannulene inside the box‐like host. The compressed corannulene structures are unambiguously revealed by single‐crystal X‐ray analysis.     

Optical switching and alignment of antiferroelectric liquid crystals containing an azo group

The optical properties of two kinds of photochromic antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) containing an azo group have been examined. Depending on the substituting group at the chiral centre, these AFLCs showed different photoinduced phase transitions by Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. This phase transition has led to a new form of optical switching controlled by a bias voltage. In addition, it was found that these AFLCs caused an azimuthal photoalignment effect regulated by linearly polarized Ar⁺ laser light irradiation. These phenomena were applied to image storage.
