Internal energy content of n-butylbenzene, bromobenzene, iodobenzene and aniline molecular ions generated by two-photon ionization at 266 nm. A photodissociation study

A technique to investigate photodissociation kinetics on a nanosecond time scale has been devised for molecular ions generated by multiphoton ionization (MPI) using mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry. The branching ratio or rate constant has been determined for the photodissociation of the n-butylbenzene, bromobenzene, iodobenzene, and aniline molecular ions generated by MPI at 266 nm. The ion internal energies have been estimated by comparing the measured kinetic data with the previous energy dependence data. The analysis has shown that only those molecular ions generated by two-photon ionization contribute to the photodissociation signals. Around half of the available energy has been found to remain as molecular ion internal energy in the two-photon ionization process. Copyright 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Investigation of the effects of cooling after laser desorption before post-ionization

To evaluate the necessity for cooling laser-desorbed molecules to obtain molecular ions and minimal fragmentation, mass spectra of a series of methoxybenzenes were measured in two different experimental configurations. In one geometry, laser-desorbed molecules were entrained in a pulsed supersonic jet before ionization. In the other, the molecules were ionized directly after laser desorption. The samples were ionized with laser-generated vacuum ultraviolet radiation in a single-photon process or ultraviolet radiation in a multi-photon process.     

Experimental Investigation of the 2D Ion Beam Profile Generated by an ESI Octopole-QMS System

In this paper, we have employed an ion imaging approach to investigate the behavior of ions exiting from a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) system that employs a radio frequency octopole ion guide before the QMS. An in-vacuum active pixel detector (Timepix) is employed at the exit of the QMS to image the ion patterns. The detector assembly simultaneously records the ion impact position and number of ions per pixel in every measurement frame. The transmission characteristics of the ion beam exiting the QMS are studied using this imaging detector under different operating conditions. Experimental results confirm that the ion spatial distribution exiting the QMS is heavily influenced by ion injection conditions. Furthermore, ion images from Timepix measurements of protein standards demonstrate the capability to enhance the quality of the mass spectral information and provide a detailed insight in the spatial distribution of different charge states (and hence different m/z) ions exiting the QMS.
