Black and white local invariants of mappings from surfaces into three-space

Goryunov proved that the space of local invariants of Vassiliev type for generic maps from surfaces to three-space is three-dimensional. The basic invariants were the number of pinch points, the number of triple points and one linked to a Rokhlin type invariant. In this paper we show that, by colouring the complement of the image of the map with a chess board pattern, we can produce a six-dimensional space of local invariants. These are essentially black and white versions of the above. Simple examples show how these are more effective. Phase shift moiré studies of processing-induced residual strains in Nickel 200 spot welds

Processing-induced residual strains in solid cylinders of Nickel 200 were investigated using phase shifting moiré interferometry. Two different experimental approaches were used to study the strains produced during Tungsten-inert gas spot welding. A comparison of results for a ‘hot/fast’ and a ‘cool/slow’ weld demonstrate the capabilities of the general approach. Both experimental methods revealed distinct differences in the residual displacement and strain fields between the two types of welds.     

Bouquet and join theorems for disentanglements

The disentanglement of certain augmentations is shown to be the topological join of a disentanglement and a Milnor fibre. The kth disentanglement of a finite map is defined and for corank 1 maps from ℂ ⁿ to ℂ ^{n +1} it is shown that they are homotopically equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Neighborhood Complexes and Generating Functions for Affine Semigroups

Given a₁,a₂,...,a_n ∈ ℤ^d$, we examine the set, G, of all non-negative integer combinations of these a_i. In particular, we examine the generating function f(z) = ∑_{b ∈ G}z_b. We prove that one can write this generating function as a rational function using the neighborhood complex (sometimes called the complex of maximal lattice-free bodies or the Scarf complex) on a particular lattice in ℤ_n. In the generic case, this follows from algebraic results of Bayer and Sturmfels. Here we prove it geometrically in all cases, and we examine a generalization involving the neighborhood complex on an arbitrary lattice.     

Mode beating in spot-size converter lasers

An anomalous modulation in the wavelength spectrum has been observed in lasers with spot-size converters. This intensity modulation is shown to be caused by beating between the fundamental lasing mode and radiation modes in the taper. This results in a periodic modulation in the net gain spectrum, which causes wavelength jumps between adjacent net gain maxima, and a drive current dependent spectral width that is expected to affect system performance. The amplitude of this spectral modulation is reduced significantly by either using an angled rear-facet which reflects the beating radiation modes away from the laser axis, or by using a nonlinear, adiabatic taper.     

Activation profiles of opioid ligands in HEK cells expressing δ opioid receptors

Background  

The aim of the present study was to characterize the activation profiles of 15 opioid ligands in transfected human embryonic kidney cells expressing only δ opioid receptors. Activation profiles of most of these ligands at δ opioid receptors had not been previously characterized in vitro. Receptor activation was assessed by measuring the inhibition of forskolin-stimulated cAMP production.     

Corn stover fractions and bioenergy

Information is presented on structure, composition, and response to enzymes of corn stover related to barriers for bioconversion to ethanol. Aromatic compounds occurred in most tissue cell walls. Ferulic acid esterase treatment before cellulase treatment significantly improved dry weight loss and release of phenolic acids and sugars in most fractions over cellulase alone. Leaf fractions were considerably higher in dry weight loss and released sugars with esterase treatment, but stem pith cells gave up the most phenolic acids. Results help identify plant fractions more appropriate for coproducts and bioconversion and those more suitable as residues for soil erosion control.     

A graphical approach to computing Selmer groups of congruent number curves

Let E _n:y ²=x ³−n ² x denote the family of congruent number elliptic curves. Feng and Xiong (2004) equate the nontriviality of the Selmer groups associated with E _n to the presence of certain types of partitions of graphs associated with the prime factorization of n.
