Synthesis of chiral [5]helicenes using aromatic oxy-Cope rearrangement as a key step

Both enantiomers of (P)-(+)-2- and (M)-(−)-2-acetoxy-11,14-dimethyl[5]helicenes 8 were synthesized by asymmetric aromatic oxy-Cope rearrangement of the corresponding chiral bridged bicyclic compounds, which were obtained by enzymatic resolution. The absolute configurations of 8 were assigned by their circular dichroism spectra.     

A new synthesis of 1,3-dienes from allyl sulfides and allyl sulfones using tri-n-butylstannylmethyl iodide

Allyl 2-pyridyl sulfide $\text{6}$ or allyl phenyl sulfone $\text{7}$ on treatment with n-butyllithium in tetrahyrofuran followed by tri-n-butylstannylmethyl iodide ($\text{4}$) afforded directly the 1,3-diene $\text{8}$ in good yield.     

A new stereoselective synthesis of 2-subsdtituted 1,3-bis(trimethylsilyl)propene derivatives and their conversion to cyclopentane and cyclohexane derivatives

Ester $\text{2}$ on treatment with sodium salt of sulfone or sulfoxide afforded 2-substituted 1,3-bis(trimethylsily)propene $\text{3}$ in good yield, from which cyclopentane and cyclohexane derivatives bearing a trimethylsilyl group in the molecules were synthesized.     

PTX phase equilibrium study of new solid solution systems,Cd1−xMxS (M = Mg,Ca, Sr)

Pressure, temperature, and composition phase equilibrium diagrams of new solid solution systems of the Cd_1?xM_xS (M = Mg, Ca, Sr) type were investigated using the quenching method. The stable region for the rock-salt-type phase is widely extended toward the high-temperature/low-pressure region by substituting 10–20 mole% of Cd with Ca or Sr. Temperature and composition phase diagrams for each solid solution system were obtained at 2 GPa. The rock-salt-type phase stability is discussed in view of these phase relations.     

Shallow surface etching of organic and inorganic compounds by electrospray droplet impact

The electrospray droplet impact (EDI) was applied to bradykinin, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), SiO₂/Si, and indium phosphide (InP). It was found that bradykinin deposited on the stainless steel substrate was ionized/desorbed without the accumulation of radiation products. The film thickness desorbed by a single collisional event was found to be less than 10 monolayers. In the EDI mass spectra for PET, several fragment ions were observed but the XPS spectra did not change with prolonged cluster irradiation. The etching rate for SiO₂ by EDI was measured to be ∼0.2 nm/min. The surface roughness of InP etched by EDI was found to be one order of magnitude smaller than that etched by 3 keV Ar⁺ for about the same etching depths. EDI is capable of shallow surface etching with little damage left on the etched surface.     

Selective absorption

Summary Some organic acids, alcohol and amine which have an asymmetric carbon atom were used for an investigation of asymmetric absorption on wool. Racemic mixture of hydratropic acid, mandelic acid andα-phenethylamine have shown the selective absorption on wool from their aqueous and alcoholic aqueous solutions and S-form of their diastereoisomers preferentially absorbed on wool. According to the results we obtained so far, it is concluded that the preferential absorption strongly depends on the configuration of the substance of which wool is composed.     

Observation of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate–myoglobin binding reaction using laser spray mass spectrometry

Covalent bonds are often created by a reaction between chemicals and protein before causing various adverse effects in a cell. Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), which has moderate toxicity, causes skin inflammation and throat irritation. For this study, we investigated a reaction mechanism between myoglobin and (DMAEMA) using a new analytical tool developed at our laboratory: laser spray mass spectrometry technique. It was found that initially DMAEMA was added to the amino group of protein by the Michael addition mechanism; the added DMAEMA was hydrolyzed to methacrylic acid using an autocatalytic system. The results of this study indicate the feasibility of the laser spray technique in analyses of reaction dynamics. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
