Photoluminescent Ferroelastic Molecular Crystals

Ferroelasticity has been reported for several types of molecular crystals, which show mechanical‐stress‐induced shape change under twinning and/or spontaneous formation of strain. Aiming to create materials that exhibit both ferroelasticity and light‐emission characteristics, we discovered the first examples of ferroelastic luminescent organometallic crystals. Crystals of arylgold(I)(N‐heterocyclic carbene)(NHC) complexes bend upon exposure to anisotropic mechanical stress. X‐ray diffraction analyses and stress‐strain measurements on these ferroelastic crystals confirmed typical ferroelastic behavior, mechanical twinning, and the spontaneous build‐up of strain. A comparison with single‐crystal structures of related gold‐NHC complexes that do not show ferroelasticity shed light on the structural origins of the ferroelastic behavior.

An Ultrastable,Small {Ag7}5+ Nanocluster within a Triangular Hollow Polyoxometalate Framework

Small Ag_n nanoclusters (n<10) have been emerging as promising materials as sensing, biolabeling, and catalysis because of their unique electronic states and optical properties. However, studying synthesis, structure determination, and exploration of their properties remain major challenges as a result of the low stability of small Ag nanoclusters. Herein, we synthesized an atomically precise face‐centered‐cubic‐type small {Ag₇}⁵⁺ nanocluster supported by a novel triangular hollow polyoxometalate (POM) framework [Si₃W₂₇O₉₆]^18?. The cluster showed unique {Ag₇}⁵⁺‐to‐POM charge transfer bands in both visible and UV light regions. Furthermore, this small {Ag₇}⁵⁺ nanocluster exhibited an unprecedented ultrastability in solution, despite having exposed Ag sites that can be accessed by small molecules, such as O₂, water, and solvents.     

Total synthesis of makaluvamine A/D, damirone B, batzelline C, makaluvone, and isobatzelline C featuring one-pot benzyne-mediated cyclization-functionalization

Total synthesis of pyrroloquinoline alkaloids, such as makaluvamine A/D, damirone B, batzelline C, makaluvone, and isobatzelline C, was achieved featuring a one-pot benzyne-mediated cyclization-functionalization reaction. The synthetic utility was demonstrated by the construction of the common pyrrolo[4,3,2-de]quinoline skeleton.     

Singularities of Blaschke normal maps of convex surfaces

We prove that the difference between the numbers of positive swallowtails and negative swallowtails of the Blaschke normal map for a given convex surface in affine space is equal to the Euler number of the subset where the affine shape operator has negative determinant.     

An intense terahertz radiation source at the Compact ERL

The Compact ERL is an energy recovery LINAC (ERL) test facility that is planned for KEK. The circumference of the recirculation path will be 70 m. Initially, the beam energy will be about 65 MeV and the current about 10 mA. Although the primary purpose of the machine is to aid the development of the key technologies that are essential for building an ultra-brilliant new synchrotron light source based on an ERL, the Compact ERL itself has great potential as an intense source of terahertz radiation. To generate the intense terahertz radiation, an electron bunch of a very short bunch length is required and bunch compression is inevitable. We discuss the parameters of the Compact ERL, present the results of a simulation of bunch compression, and make an estimate of the generated coherent synchrotron radiation.     

Dithienylethenes with a novel photochromic performance

Dithienylethenes with low decoloration quantum yields and thermal reversibility at high temperature above 100 degrees C were prepared. Introduction of bulky alkoxy substituents at 2- and 2'-positions of the thiophene rings strongly suppressed the cycloreversion quantum yields. The quantum yields were lower than 10(-3), and the photogenerated color remained stable enough under room light. On the other hand, the bulky alkoxy substituent decreased the thermal stability of the colored closed-ring isomers at high temperature. The color of the dithienylethene with cyclohexyloxy substituents faded out in less than 1 min at 160 degrees C.     

A novel [60]fullerene receptor with a Pd(II)-switched bisporphyrin cleft

Porphyrin dimer 1, which does not have an inside cavity and cannot interact with [60]fullerene (C60), becomes an excellent C60-acceptor with a large cavity in the presence of a Pd(II) complex.     

Catalytic Pauson-Khand-type reaction using aldehydes as a CO source

[reaction: see text]. Rhodium complex-catalyzed carbonylative alkene-alkyne coupling proceeds using aldehydes as a CO source. Cinnamaldehyde is the best CO donor, and various cyclopentenones were provided in high isolated yields by a solvent-free system.
