Critical behavior of electric field gradient in MnSi studied by muon level-crossing resonance

The electric quadrupole interaction of⁵⁵Mn nuclei was studied in the weakly ferromagnetic system MnSi using muon level-crossing resonance (LCR) technique. The temperature dependence of the electric field gradient (EFG) shows a critical behavior near the ferromagnetic transition temperature, indicating that the EFG due to the conduction electron is strongly correlated with the magnetic susceptibility in the itinerant electron magnetism. The temperature dependence of EFG is in reasonable agreement with the self-consistent renormalization theory developed by Moriya and coworkers.We gratefully acknowledge helpful discussion with Dr. N. NAD(P)+-NAD(P)H models. 90. Stereoselection controlled by electronic effect of a carbonyl group in oxidation of NAD(P)H analog

4-Monodeuterated NAD(P)H model compounds (1,4,6,7-tetrahydro-1,6,11-trimethyl-5-oxo-5H-benzo[c]pyrido[2,3-e]az epin; 11Me-MMPAH) have been oxidized with a series of p-benzoquinone and its derivatives in the presence of Mg2+. The models have an axial chirality with respect to the orientation of carbonyl dipole, the dihedral angle of which is larger than 55 degrees out of the plane of dihydropyridine ring. Without Mg2+, the anti- (with respect to the carbonyl dipole) hydrogen is 3 to 32 times more reactive than the corresponding syn-hydrogen, whereas, when Mg2+ is present in the system, the selectivity is shifted toward the syn-preferency. Mg2+ plays the role of a Lewis acid catalyst to control the stereochemistry at the same time as it catalyzes the reaction.     

Synthesis of 4-fluorinated UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide as an inhibitor of bacterial growth

4-Fluorinated UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide, 2, has been synthesized. In our previous study, UDP-MurNAc pentapeptide analogue 1 was found to be incorporated into the bacterial cell wall through biosynthesis. Compound 2 showed growth-inhibition activity against Gram-positive bacteria when it was added to growth media at 0.01 mg/mL. [structure--see text]     

Ceric-ion-initiated grafting of methyl methacrylate onto (1 → 5)-α-D-ribofuranan and (1 → 5)-α-D-xylofuranan

We report herein studies of grafting of MMA onto (1 → 5)-α-D -ribofuranan and (1 → 5)-α-D -xylofuranan by ceric ion initiation both in water and in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). In aqueous medium, the graft polymer having high grafting (%) can be obtained easily without adding any nitric acid. The degradation of polysaccharide by the acidic ceric ion solution is not serious; 73–82% of its original molecular weight remained after the polymerization. In DMSO, graft polymers having lower grafting (%) and lower molecular weight of grafts were obtained.     

Synthesis of polyamides by the polyaddition of bisimidazoline with dicarboxylic acids

N,N′-Dipropionylethylenediamine was synthesized by the ring-opening addition reaction of 2-ethyl-2-imidazoline with propionic acid at 220°C. By applying this reaction to polymerization, polyamides were synthesized by the ring-opening polyaddition reaction at 220°C. of 1,4-bis(imidazoline-2-yl)butane with adipic acid, succinic acid, sebacic acid, and terephthalic acid. The reaction product of 1,4-bis(imidazoline-2-yl)butane with adipic acid, which was proposed to be nylon 26, was compared with an authentic sample of nylon 26 and shown to possess a very similar infrared spectrum and melting point.
