Sorption and diffusion of water vapor in polyimide films

Sorption and diffusion of water vapor are investigated gravimetrically for polyimide films. The activity dependence of the solubility and diffusion coefficients, S and D, respectively, is classified under four types: (1) constant S and D type, (2) dual-mode sorption and transport type, (3) dual-mode type followed by a deviation due to a plasticization effect at high vapor activity, and (4) constant S and D type followed by a deviation due to water cluster formation at high activity. For the dual-mode type, the Henry's law component is much larger than the Langmuir component except at low activity, and therefore deviation in behavior from the first type is small. S is larger for polyimides with higher content of polar groups such as carbonyl, carboxyl, and sulfonyl. D is larger for polyimides with a higher fraction of free space, with some exceptions. The polyimide from 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and dimethyl-3,7-diaminodibenzothiophene-5, 5-dioxide belongs to the third type and displays both large S and large D. The polyimide from 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride and 4,4′-oxydianiline belongs to the fourth type, and has the largest D but rather small S because of the hydrophobic C(CF₃)₂ groups. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Age-dependent plasticity in the superior temporal sulcus in deaf humans: a functional MRI study

Background  

Sign-language comprehension activates the auditory cortex in deaf subjects. It is not known whether this functional plasticity in the temporal cortex is age dependent. We conducted functional magnetic-resonance imaging in six deaf signers who lost their hearing before the age of 2 years, five deaf signers who were >5 years of age at the time of hearing loss and six signers with normal hearing. The task was sentence comprehension in Japanese sign language.     

Construction of arene-fused-piperidine motifs by asymmetric addition of 2-trityloxymethylaryllithiums to nitroalkenes: the asymmetric synthesis of a dopamine D1 full agonist, A-86929

The straightforward methodology for the construction of chiral arene-fused-piperidine motifs using a highly enantioselective addition of 2-trityloxymethylaryllithiums to cyclic and acyclic nitroalkenes has been developed. The versatility of the process was highlighted by the first asymmetric synthesis of a dopamine D1 full agonist, A-86929.     

Unprecedented low Cu-N(azide)-Cu angles in end-on double azido bridged copper(II) complex

A rare asymmetric end-on double azido-bridged copper(II) complex has been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The Cu-N(azide)-Cu angle in this complex is calculated to be 89.1 degrees. This is unusually low in comparison to the same angle in other end-on azido-bridged binuclear complexes reported so far. Though a strong ferromagnetic interaction between the metal centers is expected in the complex, the coupling has actually been found to be antiferromagnetic, instead.     

Dissociation mechanism of 2-propanol on a Si(111)-(7x7) surface studied by scanning tunneling microscopy

Adsorption of 2-propanol, (CH3)2CHOH, on a Si(111)-7x7 surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy. (CH3)2CHOH adsorbs equally on the faulted and unfaulted half unit cells by forming Si-OCH(CH3)2 and Si-H on an adatom and rest atom pair. Si-OCH(CH3)2 is consecutively increased in each half unit cell, and the adsorption is saturated when every half unit cell has three Si-OCH(CH3)2, which corresponds to 0.5 of the adatom coverage. The sticking probability for the dissociation of (CH3)2CHOH is independent of the adatom coverage from 0 to 0.4, but it depends on coverage at higher than 0.4. By counting the darkened adatoms, Si-OCH(CH3)2 on the center adatom (m) and that on the corner adatom (n), it was found the m/n ratio is ca. 4 for the first dissociation of (CH3)2CHOH in virgin half unit cell, but it becomes ca. 1.9 and 1.8 when two and three Si-OCH(CH3)2 are contained in a half unit cell. This result reveals that the dissociation probability of (CH3)2CHOH at the adatom-rest atom pair site is influenced by the nearest Si-OCH(CH3)2 in the half unit cell.     

Broad-spectrum frequency comb generation and carrier-envelope offset frequency measurement by second-harmonic generation of a mode-locked fiber laser

A frequency comb spanning more than one octave has been achieved by injecting the second-harmonic generation (780 nm) of a mode-locked fiber laser (1.56 microm) into a photonic crystal fiber. We propose and realize a novel interferometric scheme for observing the carrier-envelope offset frequency of the frequency comb. Frequency noise has been observed on the measured carrier-envelope offset frequency, which has been confirmed to be generated in the photonic crystal fiber by comparing the measured beat frequencies between cw lasers and frequency combs before and after the photonic crystal fiber. The mode-locked fiber laser is considered to be an important candidate for the light source used in realizing a compact optical frequency measurement system including applications in the telecommunication bands.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.
