The electron- and hole-trapping and optical properties of a wide variety of interfaces between MgO nanocrystallites are investigated for the first time using a quantum-mechanical embedded-cluster method and time-dependent density functional theory. We conclude that delocalized holes can be transiently trapped at a large number of places within a powder. However, it is more energetically favorable for holes to trap on low-coordinated anions on the nanocrystallite surface, forming O- species. Electrons are trapped at few interfaces but are readily trapped by surface kink and corner sites. Contrary to common perception, our calculations of optical absorption spectra indicate that a variety of features buried within a powder can be exited with photon energies less than 5 eV, usually used to selectively excite low-coordinated surface sites.  相似文献

S K-edge XAS for a low-spin NiII-thiolate complex shows a 0.2 eV shift to higher pre-edge energy but no change in Ni-S bond covalency upon H-bonding. This is different from the H-bonding effect we observed in high-spin FeIII-thiolate complexes where there is a significant decrease in Fe-S bond covalency but no change in energy due to H-bonding (Dey, A.; Okamura, T.-A.; Ueyama, N.; Hedman, B.; Hodgson, K. O.; Solomon, E. I. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 12046-12053). These differences were analyzed using DFT calculations, and the results indicate that two different types of H-bonding interactions are possible in metal-thiolate systems. In the high-spin FeIII-thiolate case, the H-bonding involves a thiolate donor orbital which is also involved in bonding with the metal (active), while in the low-spin NiII-thiolate, the orbital involved in H-bonding is nonbonding with respect to the M-S bonding (passive). The contributions of active and passive H-bonds to the reduction potential and Lewis acid properties of a metal center are evaluated.  相似文献

The octanuclear complex [Eu8L4(1,4-BDC)2Cl8(MeOH)12].4Cl.2MeOH.18H2O (2) was obtained from the reaction of the tetranuclear Eu(III) species [Eu4L2Cl2(OH)4(H2O)4(MeOH)2].2Cl.7MeOH.2H2O (1) and 1,4-H2BDC (H2L = bis(5-bromo-3-methoxysalicylidene)ethylene-1,2-phenylenediamine, 1,4-H2BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid). Both 1 and 2 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, and their luminescence properties were determined. The cagelike structure of 2 encapsulates two chloride anions via MeOH...Cl hydrogen bonding. In the solid state, 2 has an open three-dimensional network with extended channels and is capable of reversible MeOH adsorption.  相似文献

The reaction between either MgI2 or CaI2 and 2 equiv of [(Me3Si)2{Me2(H3B)P}C]K (2) in toluene gives the corresponding organo-alkaline earth metal compounds [(Me3Si)2{Me2(H3B)P}C]2M in moderate to good yields [M = Mg (3), Ca (4)]. Compound 3 crystallizes solvent-free, whereas X-ray quality crystals of 4 could not be obtained in the absence of coordinating solvents; crystallization of 4 from cold methylcyclohexane/THF gives the solvate [(Me3Si)2{Me2(H3B)P}C]2Ca(THF)4 (4a). The corresponding heavier alkaline earth metal complexes [(Me3Si)2{Me2(H3B)P}C]2M(THF)5 [M = Sr (7), Ba (8)] are obtained from the reaction between MI2 and 2 equiv of 2 in THF, followed by recrystallization from cold methylcyclohexane/THF. Compound 3 degrades over a period of several weeks at room-temperature both in the solid state and in toluene solution to give the free phosphine-borane (Me3Si)2{Me2(H3B)P}CH (5) as the sole phosphorus-containing product. In addition, compounds 3, 4, and 4a react rapidly with THF in toluene solution, yielding 5 as the sole phosphorus-containing product; in contrast, compounds 7 and 8 are stable toward this solvent.  相似文献

Five mononuclear spin crossover iron(II) bis-meridional ligand complexes of the general formula [Fe(L)(2)](X)(2).solvent, have been synthesized, where X = BF(4)- or ClO(4)-; L = 2-(1-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-pyrazine (picpzpz) or 2-(3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine) (picpypz); solvent = MeOH or EtOH. The magnetic and structural consequences of systematic variation of meridional ligand, solvent, and anion, including a desolvated species, have been investigated. The complex [Fe(picpzpz)(2)](BF(4))(2).MeOH, 1.MeOH, displays several unique properties including a two-step spin transition with a gradual higher-temperature step ((1)T(1/2) = 197 K) and an abrupt low-temperature step with hysteresis ((2)T(1/2) = 91/98 K) and a metastable intermediate spin state below 70 K with quench-cooling. Removal of the solvent methanol results in the loss of the abrupt step and associated hysteresis (T(1/2) = 150 K). The complexes [Fe(picpzpz)(2)](BF(4))(2).EtOH (1.EtOH), [Fe(picpzpz)(2)](ClO(4))(2).MeOH (2.MeOH), [Fe(picpzpz)(2)](ClO(4))(2).EtOH (2.EtOH), and [Fe(picpypz)(2)](BF(4))(2).MeOH (3.MeOH) all show gradual one-step spin transitions with T(1/2) values in the range 210-250 K. Photomagnetic LIESST measurements on 1.MeOH reveal a near-quantitative excitation of high-spin sites and a unique two-step relaxation process related to the two-step thermal spin transition ((1)T(LIESST) = 49 K and (2)T(LIESST) = 70 K). The structural consequences of the unusual spin transition displayed by 1.MeOH have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction structural analyses between 25 and 293 K. Detailed characterization of the unit cell parameter evolution vs temperature reflects both the gradual high-temperature step and abrupt low-temperature step, including the thermal hysteresis, observed magnetically.  相似文献

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT‐ICR/MS) offers the opportunity for gas phase cluster formation reactions at very low pressures and at temperatures that are different from room temperature. Reactions take place with single positive‐charge metal ions that are normally +2, +3, +4, etc., charged in solution. The ions formed are detected by measuring the current induced by their cyclotron rotation, but they cannot be physically separated and collected. Collision‐induced dissociation (CID) is widely used for ion‐structure determination via the fragmentation of the excited ions. CID study aims to determine the relationship between the Vpp [peak‐to‐peak voltage of the radiofrequency (rf) pulse] and the mass‐to‐charge (m/z) ratio, which will be used for the calculation of the center‐of‐mass translational kinetic energy (Ekcm) of the excited ion under investigation. CID studies are restricted to stable ions with relatively high abundance. Nevertheless, with the evolution of computational chemistry, such problems can be overcome whereby CID calculations will be used to provide the substantial parameters for computer software, such as the Gaussian 03 program, for the structure determination of the less stable NixS anions. We show that it is possible to both directly measure and directly calculate Fermi resonance couplings in benzene. The measurement method used was a particular form of two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) known as doubly vibrationally enhanced four wave mixing. By using different pulse orderings, vibrational cross peaks could be measured either purely at the frequencies of the base vibrational states or split by the coupling energy. This capability is a feature currently unique to this particular form of 2D-IR and can be helpful in the decongestion of complex spectra. Five cross peaks of the ring breathing mode nu13 with a range of combination bands were observed spanning a region of 1500-4550 cm(-1). The coupling energy was measured for two dominant states of the nu13+nu16 Fermi resonance tetrad. Dephasing rates were measured in the time domain for nu13 and the two (nu13+nu16) Fermi resonance states. The electronic and mechanical vibrational anharmonic coefficients were calculated to second and third orders, respectively, giving information on relative intensities of the cross peaks and enabling the Fermi resonance states of the combination band nu13+nu16 at 3050-3100 cm(-1) to be calculated. The excellent agreement between calculated and measured spectral intensities and line shapes suggests that assignment of spectral features from ab initio calculations is both viable and practicable for this form of spectroscopy.  相似文献

The approximate representation of a quantum solid as an equivalent composite semiclassical solid is considered for insulating materials. The composite is comprised of point ions moving on a potential energy surface. In the classical bulk domain this potential energy is represented by potentials constructed to give the same structure and elastic properties as the underlying quantum solid. In a small local quantum domain the potential is determined from a detailed quantum calculation of the electronic structure. The new features of this well-studied problem are (1) a clearly stated theoretical context in which approximations leading to the model are introduced, (2) the representation of the classical domain by potentials focused on reproducing the specific quantum response being studied, (3) development of "pseudoatoms" for a realistic treatment of charge densities where bonds have been broken to define the environment of the quantum domain, and (4) inclusion of polarization effects on the quantum domain due to its distant bulk environment. This formal structure is illustrated in detail for a SiO(2) nanorod. More importantly, each component of the proposed modeling is tested quantitatively for this case, verifying its accuracy as a faithful multiscale model of the original quantum solid. To do so, the charge density of the entire nanorod is calculated quantum mechanically to provide the reference by which to judge the accuracy of the modeling. The construction of the classical potentials, the rod, the pseudoatoms, and the multipoles is discussed and tested in detail. It is then shown that the quantum rod, the rod constructed from the classical potentials, and the composite classical/quantum rod all have the same equilibrium structure and response to elastic strain. In more detail, the charge density and forces in the quantum subdomain are accurately reproduced by the proposed modeling of the environmental effects even for strains beyond the linear domain. The accuracy of the modeling is shown to apply for two quite different choices for the underlying quantum chemical method: transfer Hamiltonian and density functional methods.  相似文献

This paper reports a series of chloride anion receptors containing two catechol head groups connected through their ortho-positions via a spacer chain. The linking group chosen to attach the spacer chain to the catechol units has a major impact on the anion-binding potential of the receptor. Linking groups that are capable of forming stable six-membered intramolecular hydrogen-bonded rings with the catechol O-H groups significantly inhibit the ability of the catechol units to hydrogen bond to chloride anions. However, where the linking groups are only capable of forming five- or seven-membered intramolecular hydrogen-bonded rings, then anion binding via hydrogen bonding through the catechol O-H groups becomes a possibility. This process is solvent dependent; the presence of competitive solvent (e.g., DMSO-d6) disrupts the intramolecular hydrogen-bonding pattern and enhances anion binding relative to simple unfunctionalized catechol. The most effective receptor is that in which the hydrogen-bonding linker (-CH2CONH-) is most distant from the catechol units and can only form a seven-membered intramolecular hydrogen-bonded ring. In this case, the receptor, which contains two catechol units, is a more effective chloride anion binder than simple unfunctionalized catechol, demonstrating that the two head groups, in combination with the N-H groups in the linker, act cooperatively and enhance the degree of anion binding. In summary, this paper provides insight into the hydrogen-bonding patterns in ortho-functionalized catechols and the impact these have on the potential of the catechol O-H groups to hydrogen bond to a chloride anion.  相似文献

A novel universal support for deoxyribo- and ribonucleic acid synthesis has been developed. The support, constructed from 1,4-dimethoxycatechol, represents an improvement over existing universal supports because of its ability to cleave and deprotect under mild conditions in standard reagents. Because no nonvolatile additives are required for cleavage and deprotection, the synthesized oligonucleotides do not require purification prior to use in biochemical assays. Using reverse phase HPLC and electrospray mass spectroscopy, it was determined that oligonucleotides synthesized on the universal support (UL1) 3'-dephosphorylate quickly (9 h in 28-30% ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) at 55 degrees C, 2 h in 28-30% NH4OH at 80 degrees C, or <1 h in ammonium hydroxide/methylamine (1:1) (AMA) at 80 degrees C). Oligonucleotides used as primers for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay were found to perform identically to control primers, demonstrating full biological compatibility. In addition, a method was developed for sintering the universal support directly into a filter plug which can be pressure fit into the synthesis column of a commercial synthesizer. The universal support plugs allow the synthesis of high-quality oligonucleotides at least 120 nucleotides in length, with purity comparable to non-universal commercial supports and approximately 50% lower reagent consumption. The universal support plugs are routinely used to synthesize deoxyribo-, ribo-, 3'-modified, 5'-modified, and thioated oligonucleotides. The flexibility of the universal support and the efficiency of 3'-dephosphorylation are expected to increase the use of universal supports in oligonucleotide synthesis.  相似文献
