Synthesis and Odor Evaluation of Stereoisomers of Imine Derivatives in Roasted Spotted Shrimp

All possible stereoisomers of imine derivatives 1 – 4 , which have the characteristic roast odor of seafood, were synthesized. As a result of odor evaluation of all isomers, we found that each isomer has a different and characteristic odor of roasted seafood.     

Synthesis of monodispersed silica nanoparticles with high concentration by the Stöber process

Silica nanoparticles with high concentration were prepared by the sol–gel process based on the Stöber method using tetraethoxysilane as a starting material. It was found that silica sol with about 4 wt% in concentration and with a diameter of about 10 nm was obtained by controlling the reaction conditions in the Stöber process. By removing the solvent under a reduced pressure, the particle concentration was increased up to 15 wt% without aggregation.     

Excess enthalpies of binary mixtures of butylamines + propanols at 298.15 K

The molar excess enthalpies of eight systems of butylamines + propanols were determined at 298.15 K using a twin-microcalorimeter. All excess enthalpies were exothermic and large. An equilibrium constant K ₁ expressed in terms of mole fractions and standard thermodynamic properties of formation (Δ_f H, Δ_f G, Δ_f S) of 1:1 complex were evaluated by ideal mixtures of monomeric molecules and their associated complexes. Concentration dependence of the FT-Raman spectrum showed systematic changes of bands. Spectroscopic considerations based on this and ab initio calculations on molecules were performed at the Mp2/6-311G(d,p) level of theory. Interaction energies between butylamine and propanol were calculated by the supermolecular and NBO methods. The results were discussed with previous results to clarify the steric and positional effect of the amino and hydroxyl group.     

Total synthesis and structure revision of deacetylravidomycin M

Total synthesis of the unnatural enantiomer of deacetylravidomycin M was accomplished. The key steps include, (1) aryl C-glycosidation of the azido-bearing fucosyl acetate 2 by using catalytic Sc(OTf)₃, (2) the [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of alkoxybenzyne bearing an azido sugar to ketene silyl acetal, and (3) the ring expansion reaction of alkoxybenzocyclobutenone. The synthesis revealed that the natural product is not the proposed amine, but the corresponding N-oxide.     

Inhibitory effects of 3-O-acyl-(+)-catechins on Epstein-Barr virus activation

In the course of an exploratory investigation of antitumor-promoting catechins, 3-O-acyl-(+)-catechins of varying carbon lengths from C(4) to C(18) were assessed for inhibitory effects on the activation of the Epstein-Barr virus early antigen. Like 3-O-acyl-(-)-epigallocatechins, the (+)-catechin derivatives showed promising effects with the C-3 acyl chain of C(8)-C(11) carbon atoms.     

Formal catalytic asymmetric total synthesis of fostriecin

The common synthetic intermediate of a potent and promising anticancer agent, fostriecin, was synthesized using a unique method that combines four catalytic asymmetric reactions as shown above.     

Photoredox‐Catalyzed Alkenylation of Benzylsulfonium Salts

Visible light‐mediated radical alkenylation of benzylsulfonium salts was achieved by means of fac‐Ir(ppy)₃ as a photocatalyst, giving allylbenzenes as products. A variety of functional groups, such as halogen, ester, and cyano, were well tolerated in this transformation. Starting benzylsulfonium salts could be readily prepared from benzyl alcohols by an acid‐mediated substitution, increasing the synthetic utility of this transformation.     

Metal-assisted stabilization and probing of collagenous triple helices

Collagen model peptides that contain 2,2'-bipyridyl (bpy) ligands were designed and synthesized. The thermal stability of the collagenous triple helix was increased by forming an Fe(II)(bpy-peptide)(3) complex. The chirality of the metal center was shifted to form right-handed Delta-isomers induced by the supercoiling of the peptide moiety. Moreover, the refolding rate of the triple helix was increased in the presence of Fe(II). This metal-coordinating system possesses potential to be used to stabilize the triple-helical conformation as well as to probe the folding status of collagen model peptides.     

One-step analysis of testis steroidogenesis from neonatal exposure to synthetic estrogen by normal-phase HPLC

Neonatal exposure to synthetic estrogen endocrine disruptors or estrogen-receptor inhibitors induces developmental abnormalities in the male reproductive system. To investigate whether neonatal exposure affects spermatogenesis in juvenile and pubertal testis, Sprague-Dawley rat pups were given synthetic estrogen endocrine disruptors or estrogen-receptor inhibitors by a single injection on the day of birth at concentrations ranging between 2 to 40 mm, and sacrificed on day 21 (juvenile), 35 (prepuberty) or 50 (puberty). The testes were weighed and examined histologically at each stage. Further, the metabolites of steroidogenesis were analyzed using normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Neonatal exposure significantly reduced testis weights and steroidogenesis to one- fifth to one-half of that of the juvenile control, and further suppressed irreversible steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis during puberty.
