Evaluation of low-molecular gelatin as a pharmaceutical additive for rapidly absorbed oral dosage formulation

The dissolution behavior of ibuprofen from a kneaded mixture with low-molecular gelatin (LM gelatin) has been studied in comparison to kneaded mixtures prepared with other additives. Their in vivo absorption behaviors were also examined. The LM gelatin markedly enhanced the dissolution rate of ibuprofen compared to that with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000, dextran T10 or pullulan. Oral administrations of the kneaded mixture to beagle dogs showed the LM gelatin to be most effective in accelerating the absorption rate of ibuprofen among the additives used.     

Formal catalytic asymmetric total synthesis of fostriecin

The common synthetic intermediate of a potent and promising anticancer agent, fostriecin, was synthesized using a unique method that combines four catalytic asymmetric reactions as shown above.     

Inclusion-water-cluster in a three-dimensional superlattice of gold nanoparticles

Three-dimensional particle crystals made of dicarboxylic thiolate (MSA)-stabilized gold nanoparticles were formed at an air/water interface. FTIR spectra of this supracrystal showed that three well-resolved peaks existed from 3400 to 3550 cm-1 just falling in a region of OH stretching vibrational mode. Precise analysis showed that all these peaks originated from the water cluster included in the interstice of a particle crystal.     

On the correlation of the glass transition temperature of a copolymer with its comonomer sequences

The glass transition temperature of a copolymer depends not only on chemical composition but also on its comonomer sequences. This experimental fact is explained by Barton's and Johnston's equations. Their equations, though complicated, become simple, if a suitable parameter is used to describe the comonomer sequences. It is shown that with these new expressions, their equations can be used to understand glass transition temperatures of two additional types of copolymers, compatible multiblock copolymers and homopolymers with various tacticities treated as steric copolymers.Dedicated to Professor Bernhard Wunderlich on the occasion of his 65th birthdayWe wish to thank the reviewer for his/her kind linguistic improvement of this article.

Synthesis and Odor Evaluation of Stereoisomers of Imine Derivatives in Roasted Spotted Shrimp

All possible stereoisomers of imine derivatives 1 – 4 , which have the characteristic roast odor of seafood, were synthesized. As a result of odor evaluation of all isomers, we found that each isomer has a different and characteristic odor of roasted seafood.     

Novel real-time sensors to quantitatively assess in vivo inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate production in intact cells

Real-time observation of messenger molecules in individual intact cells is essential for physiological studies of signaling mechanisms. We have developed a novel inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP(3)) sensor based on the pleckstrin homology (PH) domain from phospholipase C (PLC) delta. The environmentally sensitive fluorophore 6-bromoacetyl-2-dimethyl-aminonaphtalene was conjugated to the genetically introduced cysteine at the mouth of the IP(3) binding pocket for enhanced IP(3) selectivity and for rapid and direct visualization of intracellular IP(3) > or = 0.5 microM as fluorescence emission decreased. The probe, tagged with arginine-rich sequences for efficient translocation into various cell types, revealed a major contribution of Ca2+ influx to PLC-mediated IP(3) production that boosts Ca2+ release from endoplasmic reticulum. Thus, our IP(3) probe was extremely effective to quantitatively assess real-time physiological IP(3) production via those pathways formed only in the intact cellular configuration.     

A new synthesis of δ-lactones from oxetanes

Oxetanes were reacted with lithium enolates generated from esters or amides in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate to give δ-hydroxyesters or amides in high yield, which were hydrolyzed and converted to δ-lactones.
