The origin of enhanced photocatalytic decomposition of ATP on TiO2 powders as induced by surface modification with lanthanide ions: important roles of ATP adsorption to the modified surface

Surface modification of TiO₂ powders with lanthanide salts (EuCl₃ or YbCl₃) enhanced photocatalytic decomposition of ATP. In comparison with the unmodified catalyst, a 3-fold increase in the ATP decay rate was observed with TiO₂ powders as prepared in 5 mM EuCl₃ (or YbCl₃) solution. The reason was ascribed to enrichment of ATP to TiO₂ powder with the lanthanide ions. Evidence was obtained by adsorption experiments where ATP concentration was monitored after dispersing TiO₂ powders into the solution. The ATP molecules adsorbed faster to TiO₂ powder and strongly stabilized there in the presence of Yb³⁺ than otherwise.     

METHODS OF PREPARING CHLOROPHYLL a MULTILAYERS ON GLASS PLATES

Abstract— Preparative methods for forming chlorophyll a multilayers on glass plates were re-investigated in relation to deposition ratios, and by checking the stability of chlorophyll u in the multilayers spectrophotometrically and by thin-layer chromatography. The methods for measuring deposition ratios were also re-examined and the best conditions selected.     

Mechanochemical Complexation between Deoxycholic Acid and Salicylic Acid

A complex between deoxycholic acid (DCA) and salicylic acid (SA) was prepared by grinding and coprecipitation methods. The resultant complex was characterized by means of powder X-ray diffractometry, IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. The stoichiometry (DCA : SA 1 : 1) of the complex obtained by grinding was identical to that obtained by coprecipitation. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the DCA–SA complex differed from the typical pattern of DCA–guest complexes such as DCA–camphor and DCA–phenanthrene complexes. IR spectra suggested that a different kind of hydrogen bonding was formed in the crystal of the DCA–SA complex, compared with the other DCA–guest complexes. This was in good agreement with data from the crystal structure.     

Vascular dilatory action of the Chinese crude drug. II. Effects of scoparone on calcium mobilization

Further experiments were conducted to examine the effect of scoparone (6,7-dimethoxycoumarin), a coumarin derivative found in the Chinese crude drug "Capillaris Flos," on calcium mobilization. Scoparone does not affect Ca2+ influx through the voltage-dependent channel due to membrane depolarization. Its inhibitory action may be dependent not only on the inhibition of Ca2+ release from sarcoplasmic reticulum but also on the inhibition of extracellular Ca2+ influx through the receptor-operated channel.     

Own N-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics study of the reaction of OH<Superscript>−</Superscript> with polychlorinated hydrocarbons CH<Subscript>(4−n)</Subscript>Cl<Subscript>n</Subscript> (n=2–4)

The reliability of the two-layer own N-layered integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics (ONIOM) method was examined for the S_N2 reaction CH_(4–n)Cl_n+OH^–. In the ONIOM calculation, only the methyl chloride and OH^–were treated at a high level and the effect of polychlorination was taken into account only at a low level. The ONIOM results were compared with the target CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ results obtained by Borisov etal. [(2001) J. Phys. Chem. A 105:7724]. The ONIOM[MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ:B3LYP/6-31+G(d)] was found to reproduce well the target geometry and energy at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The single-point improved energetics at the ONIOM[CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ:MP2/6-31+G(d)] is found to give results nearly as accurate as the target CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ results. The substantially reduced cost, 20% for optimization and 5% for single-point improved energy of the target cost for n=4, as well as small errors suggest that ONIOM is a powerful tool for accurate potential-energy surfaces of the reaction of large polyhalohydrocarbons.     

Synthesis and antiallergy activity of [1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-9(3H)-one derivatives. II. 6-Alkyl- and 6-cycloalkylalkyl derivatives.

A series of 6-alkyl- or 6-(cycloalkylalkyl)-[1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2- a]-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-9(3H)-ones 1b--o was synthesized from the corresponding 1,3,4-thiadiazol-5-amines 3b--o and the antiallergic activities of the products were evaluated. Among the compounds 6-(2-cyclohexylethyl)- [1,3,4]thiadiazolo[3,2-a]-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-9(3H)-one 1h, whose X-ray crystallographic stereostructure is shown, was found to be a promising new antiallergic agent, which has low toxicity and dual activity as a leukotriene D4 receptor antagonist and as an orally active mast cell stabilizer.     

Copper(II) diamino acid complexes: quantum chemical computations regarding diastereomeric effects on the energy of complexation

[reaction: see text] Quantum chemical calculations were used to rationalize the observed enantiodifferentiation in the complexation of alpha-amino acids to chiral Cu(II) complexes. Apart from Cu(II)[bond]pi interactions and steric repulsions between the anchoring cholesteryl-Glu moiety and an aromatic amino acid R group, hydrogen bonding also plays a role. In fact, in the case of tryptophan, C[double bond]O...H[bond]N hydrogen bonding between the glutamate moiety and the tryptophan N[bond]H group compensates for the loss of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding and diminished Cu(II)[bond]pi interactions.     

Asymmetric skeletal rearrangement of symmetrically alpha,alpha-disubstituted alpha-amino aldehydes: a new entry to optically active alpha-hydroxy ketones

A unique asymmetric skeletal rearrangement of symmetrically alpha,alpha-disubstituted alpha-amino aldehydes has been accomplished for the first time using a chiral organoaluminum Lewis acid 1. For instance, treatment of (S)-2,2'-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylamino)-1,1'-binaphthyl with Me3Al (1.0 equiv) in toluene at room temperature for 15 min and at 110 degrees C for an additional 15 min produced (S)-1, and a subsequent reaction with alpha -amino aldehyde 2a (R = CH2Ph) at -78 degrees C for 4 h and at -40 degrees C for 12 h resulted in the smooth rearrangement to the zwitterionic iminium intermediate A, which furnished the alpha-hydroxy ketone 3a (R = CH2Ph) in 93% isolated yield with 95% ee (S) after acidic hydrolysis. This result, together with other representative examples, clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the present method for the hitherto difficult asymmetric synthesis of acyloins. Furthermore, we found that the treatment of the in situ generated A with DIBAH afforded the corresponding anti amino alcohol exclusively without loss of enantiomeric excess. Our approach casts light on the previously unexplored yet potential utility of alpha-amino aldehydes as synthetic building blocks and also provides a new entry to optically active alpha-hydroxy ketones and 1,2-amino alcohols.     

Interactions between temperature-sensitive hydrogel microspheres and granulocytes

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) has a low critical solution temperature (LCST) at 32°C in water and the hydrophilicity changes through the LCST. The microspheres whose surface was composed of PNIPAM exhibited phase transition behavior around 32°C. Therefore, the interactions between PNIPAM micropheres and granulocytes depended on the temperature. That is, the oxygen consumption and active oxygen production by cells in contact with PNIPAM-containing microspheres and adhesion of the microspheres to the cell surface were more enhanced above the LCST of PNIPAM than below it, whereas no significant temperature dependence of cell–microspheres interaction was observed in nonthermosensitive microsphere systems. It was suggested that the function of cells could be controlled with temperature using the temperature-sensitive microspheres.
