Spin effects on oscillatory magnetoresistances in n-Pb1−xSnxTe

Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in n-Pb_1?xSn_xTe have been measured in the magnetic field parallel to the [100] crystal direction at 1.5 K. In the longitudinal magnetoresistances, the one-side peaks of spin-splitting pair series are completely missing. This anomaly is well explained by the selection rules, theoretically derived in the study on a similar effect in Hg_1?xCd_xTe. Landau sublevel-crossings are also discussed.

The first success of an X-ray analysis of a thiabenzene derivative, 1-benzoyl-2-methyl-2-thianaphthalene is described.     

Caesium-selective PVC membrane electrodes based on bis(crown ether)s

Caesium-selective PVC membrane electrodes based on bis(crown ether)s containing benzo-18-crown-6 moieties were prepared using two kinds of plasticizers. Selectivity coefficients for various interfering monovalent ions were determined by the mixed solution method, and were found to relfect the complexing property and extractability of the bis-(benzo-18-crown-6)s. The electrochemical selectivity was also compared with that of the corresponding monocyclic analog and valinomycin.     

Gas chromatographic determination of lower fatty acids in gaseous samples via conventional in situ derivatization of the strontium salts catalysed by poly(crow ether)

Poly(crown ether)-catalysed derivatization of lower fatty acids with p-bromophenacyl bromide or pentafluorobenzyl bromide has been used for their determination in gaseous samples by gas chromatography (employing either flame-ionization or electron-capture detection). Stontium hydroxide was employed as a base for the derivatization, taking advantage of the fact that a column packed with strontium hydroxide-coated glass beads is very suitable for preconcentration of the fatty acids from ambient air. In situ derivatization of lower fatty acids, preconcentrated on the glass beads as their strontium salts, proceeded nearly quantitatively in acetonitrile. Traces of lower fatty acids in artificial sample gases could be determined successfully using this conventional derivatization followd by direct injection of the reaction mixture into a gas chromatograph.     

Composite lattice pattern formation in a wide-aperture thin-slice solid-state laser with imperfect reflective ends

We observed self-formations of multiple lasing channels and two-dimensional lasing patterns consisting of composite local modes having different lasing frequencies in a laser-diode-pumped wide-aperture thin-slice solid-state laser with imperfect reflective end surfaces. Global patterns resembling higher-order Hermite-Gaussian modes or possessing N-fold rotational symmetries were experimentally shown to appear due to the standard polished surface roughness of closely spaced reflective ends and nonlinear modal interactions.     

Wave-number spectra and intermittency in the terrestrial foreshock region

Wave-number spectra of magnetic field fluctuations are directly determined in the terrestrial foreshock region (upstream of a quasiparallel collisionless shock wave) using four-point Cluster spacecraft measurements. The spectral curve is characterized by three ranges reminiscent of turbulence: energy injection, inertial, and dissipation range. The spectral index for the inertial range spectrum is close to Kolmogorov's slope, -5/3. On the other hand, the fluctuations are highly anisotropic and intermittent perpendicular to the mean magnetic field direction. These results suggest that the foreshock is in a weakly turbulent and intermittent state in which parallel propagating Alfvén waves interact with one another, resulting in the phase coherence or the intermittency.     

Enantioselective Synthesis of Tetra-ortho-Substituted Axially Chiral Biaryls through Rhodium-Catalyzed Double [2 + 2 + 2] Cycloaddition

[reaction: see text] We have established an enantioselective synthesis of both C2 symmetric and unsymmetric tetra-ortho-substituted axially chiral biaryls through rhodium-catalyzed double [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition (up to >99% ee). This method serves as an attractive new route to enantioenriched tetra-ortho-substituted axially chiral biaryls in view of the one-step access to substrate diynes and tetraynes starting from readily available alkynes.     

A steep one-step [HS-HS] to [LS-LS] spin transition in a 4,4'-bipyridine linked one-dimensional coordination polymer constructed from a pyrazolato bridged Fe(II) dimer

The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility, X-ray crystallography, and M?ssbauer and Raman spectra of a new dinuclear complex-based one-dimensional coordination polymer [[Fe(II)2(NCS)2(mu-bpypz)2](micro-4,4'-bpy)].MeOH demonstrated a steep one-step [HS-HS] to [LS-LS] spin transition.     

Syntheses and Mesomorphic Properties of New Liquid Crystalline Materials Involving Piperazine Skeleton

Some mesogenic materials involving a piperazine skeleton were prepared and the thermal properties were examined by DSC and microscopic analyses. Although the piperazines have a thermal flexibility similar to cyclohexyl ring, a lateral interaction due to lone pair electrons of nitrogens largely enhances the thermal stability of the mesophase. The piperazine compounds tend to preserve a smectic arrangement.
