Synthesis of polymers in aqueous solutions: Synthesis of polysulfide by reaction of bis(4‐mercaptophenyl) sulfide with bis(4‐chloro‐3‐nitrophenyl) sulfone using various bases in aqueous solutions

The polycondensation of bis(4‐mercaptophenyl) sulfide (BMPS) with bis(4‐chloro‐3‐nitrophenyl) sulfone (BCNPS) was examined using various organic or inorganic bases in mixed solvents of N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) with water or in plain water. The reaction of BMPS with BCNPS proceeded smoothly to give the corresponding polysulfide in mixed solvents of NMP with water at 60 °C using 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecene‐7 as a base, although the rate of the reaction decreased gradually as the water in the solvent increased. Polysulfide can also be obtained by reaction in plain water using appropriate organic bases such as tripropylamine (TPA) or quinoline. The polysulfide with a number‐average molecular weight of 45,100 was synthesized in 62% yield when the reaction of BMPS with BCNPS was performed using TPA as a base at 60 °C for 48 h in plain water. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Total Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of (+)‐Neopeltolide and Its Analogues

The stereocontrolled total synthesis of the originally proposed ( 1 ) and correct ( 2 ) structures of (+)‐neopeltolide, a novel marine macrolide natural product with highly potent antiproliferative activity against several cancer cell lines as well as potent antifungal activity, has been achieved by exploiting a newly developed Suzuki–Miyaura coupling/ring‐closing metathesis strategy. Alkylborate 44 , which was generated in situ from iodide 34 , was coupled with enol phosphate 8 by a Suzuki–Miyaura coupling. Ring‐closing metathesis of the derived diene 45 followed by stereoselective hydrogenation afforded tetrahydropyran 47 as a single stereoisomer in high overall yield from 34 . Our convergent strategy enabled us to construct the 14‐membered macrolactone core structure of 2 in a rapid and efficient manner. Total synthesis and biological evaluation of synthetic intermediates and designed synthetic analogues, performed to establish the structure–activity relationships of 2 , led to the discovery of a structurally simple yet potent cytotoxic analogue, 9‐demethylneopeltolide ( 54 ).     

Liquid-liquid extraction of silver ion with benzothiacrown ether derivatives

The extraction behavior of mono-, poly-, anal bis-(benzothiacrown ether)s is studied for alkali, alkaline-earth, heavy, and transition metal ions in the presence of picrate. These ethers show high selectivity for silver ion. Silver extractions from binary and quaternary mixtures of silver with heavy or transition metal ions were successful, except for mixtures with mercury(II) ion. Silver was extracted from a copper ore with ca. 80% recovery.

Quark mixings in a subquark model

Quark mixings and theor momentum dependences are discussed in a subquark model in which the weak current is made of the iso-doublet spinor subquarks. The Cabibbo angle is predicted to become larger as momentum transfer between quarks grows up.     

Infrared spectra of 1-phosphapropyne,CH3CP,and its perdeuteride,CD3CP

The infrared spectra of 1-phosphapropyne, CH₃CP, and its perdeuteride, CD₃CP, have been measured in the gaseous and solid states. The Q_K branches of perpendicular bands have been analyzed in terms of the usual quadratic expression in K. Fermi resonances were identified for the ν₁, ν₂ + ν₃, 2ν₃, 2ν₆⁰; and ν₅, 2ν₃ + ν₈ band systems of CH₃CP and the ν₁, 2ν₃, 2ν₆⁰; ν₆, ν₇ + ν₈; and ν₇, 3ν₈¹ band systems of CD₃CP. The xy Coriolis interaction was also identified between the ν₃ and ν₆ bands of the two species. All the fundamentals were assigned and the normal coordinate treatment was carried out along with the Coriolis constants, ζ^z.
