Alkaline salt-catalyzed aza Diels-Alder reactions of Danishefsky's diene with imines in water under neutral conditions

Two- or three-component aza Diels-Alder reactions of Danishefsky's diene with imines or aldehydes and amines in water took place smoothly under neutral conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of an alkaline salt such as sodium triflate to afford dihydro-4-pyridones in high yields.     

A new strategy for construction of eight-membered carbocycles by Brook rearrangement mediated [6 + 2] annulation

[reaction: see text] A newly developed strategy for construction of eight-membered carbocycles via [6 + 2] annulation that involves the combination of beta-alkenoyl acylsilanes and a vinyllithium derivative is described. A unique feature of this annulative approach is that it enables in one operation and a stereoselective manner construction of eight-membered ring systems containing useful functionalities for further synthetic elaboration from readily available six- and two-carbon components.     

Ultramicro determination of organic halogens using sealed tube dry combustion method

A sealed tube dry combustion method that is simple, accurate, and precise for ultramicro determination of halogens in organic compounds has been developed. Samples below 1 mg are heated at 580 °C for 1 h in an electric furnace. After the combustion and absorption of the gaseous halogen, the interior of the tube is rinsed. Subsequent titration is carried out potentiometrically with silver nitrate and yielded standard deviations of 0.21% for chlorine, 0.17% for bromine, and 0.25% for iodine.     

Response Characteristics of a Glucose Electrode with a Sensing Membrane Prepared by Plasma Polymerization

A glucose electrode was composed of a dissolved oxygen electrode and an immobilized glucose oxidase membrane prepared by plasma polymerization of propargyl alcohol as a monomer. Fairly good precision of the electrode response to sample solutions was obtained by measurements using the steady-state method or the reaction rate method. Activity of the glucose oxidase immobilized within the membrane and mounted on the electrode lasted for 50 consecutive measurements over 5 days, and, if the membrane was stored in a buffer solution of pH 7.0 at a temperature of 0°C, the activity was preserved for more than 2 months. Such immobilization of the glucose oxidase with the plasma polymer effectively suppressed interference from Cu²⁺ions, which would seriously interrupt oxidation of the glucose in homogeneous solutions, in the sample solutions.     

Visualization of Heterogeneous Oxygen Storage Behavior in Platinum‐Supported Cerium‐Zirconium Oxide Three‐Way Catalyst Particles by Hard X‐ray Spectro‐Ptychography

The cerium density and valence in micrometer‐size platinum‐supported cerium–zirconium oxide Pt/Ce₂Zr₂O_x (x=7–8) three‐way catalyst particles were successfully mapped by hard X‐ray spectro‐ptychography (ptychographic‐X‐ray absorption fine structure, XAFS). The analysis of correlation between the Ce density and valence in ptychographic‐XAFS images suggested the existence of several oxidation behaviors in the oxygen storage process in the Ce₂Zr₂O_x particles. Ptychographic‐XAFS will open up the nanoscale chemical imaging and structural analysis of heterogeneous catalysts.     

Brézis-Gallouët-Wainger type inequality with a double logarithmic term in the Hölder space: Its sharp constants and extremal functions

We investigate the sharp constants in a Brézis-Gallouët-Wainger type inequality with a double logarithmic term in the Hölder space in a bounded domain in Rⁿ. Ibrahim, Majdoub and Masmoudi gave the sharp constant in the two-dimensional case. We make precise estimates to give the sharp constants, and pass to the case of higher dimensions n≥2. We can also show that the inequality with fixed constants including the sharp ones admits an extremal function under a suitable condition when the domain is a ball.     

Topological Structure of the Space of Weighted Composition Operators Between Different Hardy Spaces

We consider properties related to weighted composition operators boundedly acting from the classical Hardy space H ^p to H ^q for \({1 \leq q < p < \infty}\) . Especially, we shall completely determine path connected components in the set of weighted composition operators and explicitly characterize by function-theoretic properties of analytic self-maps.

Stereochemistry in cationic polymerization of alkenyl ethers. V. Stereochemistry of acetal additions as model reactions for the polymerization of alkenyl ethers

Acetal additions to β-substituted vinyl ethers having a variety of substituents (alkenyl ethers) were stereochemically investigated as model reactions for their cationic polymerization. The reactions catalyzed by BF₃O(C₂H₅)₂ in CH₂Cl₂ at O°C gave 1:1 adducts, the steric structure of which was determined by means of ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy. trans-Alkenyl ethers always gave adducts with a single structure stereospecifically, indicating that the intermediate carbocation attacks a trans-alkenyl ether from a definite direction independent of the bulkiness of substituents. On the other hand, cis-alkenyl ethers formed adducts with two steric structures, and the direction of cation addition was found to depend on the bulkiness of the alkoxy group involved. The above trends were in agreement with the results for poly(alkenyl ether)s and allowed detailed discussion of the stereochemistry of the propagation processes in alkenyl ether polymerizations.
