Beta-replacement reaction of serine-O-carbonate derivatives with thiols catalyzed by a pyridoxal model having an ionophore side-chain

Serine-O-carbonate derivatives, including peptides having a serine-O-carbonate residue at the N-terminal position, are catalytically transformed into S-substituted cysteine derivatives employing the pyridoxal model having an ionophore function in the presence of Li+; this is the first artificial model mimicking cystathionine Beta-synthase.     

Tandem Cyclization of Alkynylmetals Bearing a Remote Leaving Group via Cycloalkylidene Carbenes

Treatment of terminal alkynes bearing a remote leaving group with MNR(2) (M = Li, Na, K) gives bicyclo[n.3.0]-1-alkenes (n = 3, 4). The tandem cyclization proceeds through a mechanism involving exo-cyclization of an alkynylmetal intermediate and intramolecular C-H insertion of the resulting carbenoid.     

Synthetic studies leading to DE-ring analogs of camptothecin

A synthetic scheme leading to an isomeric DE ring ( 14 ) of the anti-tumor alkaloid, camptothecin, has been achieved. However, the method failed to give the correct pyridone lactone ( 2 ) found in this alkaloid.     

Electronic transport in fullerene C20 bridge assisted by molecular vibrations

The effect of molecular vibrations on electronic transport is investigated with the smallest fullerene C20 bridge, utilizing the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function techniques combined with the tight-binding molecular-dynamics method. Large discontinuous steps appear in the differential conductance when the applied bias voltage matches particular vibrational energies. The magnitude of the step is found to vary considerably with the vibrational mode and to depend on the local electronic states besides the strength of electron-vibration coupling. On the basis of this finding, a novel way to control the molecular motion by adjusting the gate voltage is proposed.     

Continuous chemoselective methylation of functionalized amines and diols with supercritical methanol over solid acid and acid-base bifunctional catalysts

The selective N-methylation of bifunctionalized amines with supercritical methanol (scCH(3)OH) promoted by the conventional solid acids (H-mordenite, beta-zeolite, amorphous silica-alumina) and acid-base bifunctional catalysts (Cs-P-Si mixed oxide and gamma-alumina) was investigated in a continuous-flow, fixed-bed reactor. The use of scCH(3)OH in the reaction of 2-aminoethanol with methanol (amine/CH(3)OH = 1/10.8) over the solid catalysts led to a significant improvement in the chemoselectivity of the N-methylation. Among the catalysts examined, the Cs-P-Si mixed oxide provided the most efficient catalyst performance in terms of selectivity and reactivity at 300 degrees C and 8.2 MPa; the N-methylation selectivity in the products reaching up to 94% at 86% conversion. The present selective methylation was successfully applied to the synthesis of N-methylated amino alcohols and diamines as well as O-methylated ethylene glycol. Noticeably, ethoxyethylamine was less reactive, suggesting that the hydroxy group of the amino alcohols is a crucial structural factor in determining high reactivity and selectivity, possibly because of the tethering effect of another terminus, a hydroxo group, to the catalyst surface. The magic-angle-spinning NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis of the Cs-P-Si mixed oxide catalyst revealed that the acidic and basic sites originate from P(2)O(5)/SiO(2) and Cs/SiO(2), respectively, and the weak acid-base paired sites are attributed to three kinds of cesium phosphates on SiO(2). The weak acid-base sites on the catalyst surface might be responsible for the selective dehydrative methylation.     

Photodecarbonylation of ruthenium carbonyl octaethylporphyrin via stepwise two-photon absorption of visible light

The photoinduced decarbonylation of a ruthenium(II) carbonyl octaethylporphyrin (RuOEP(CO)(Py)) complex has been shown to occur upon nanosecond pulse laser irradiation as a visible light excitation source, which is reasonably interpreted by a stepwise two-photon absorption process.     

The Total Absolute Curvature of Nonclosed Curves in S 2, (II)

Extending the results in [1], we determine the shape of the curve in S ² which minimize the total absolute curvature in the set of nonclosed curves with fixed endpoints, end-directions and length. We deal with a more general class of curves than in [1].
