Spontaneous racemization and epimerization behavior in solution of chiral nitroxides

[reaction: see text] Enantiomerically enriched samples of chiral cyclic nitroxides with a 4-hydroxyphenyl group on the stereogenic center bearing the NO radical group undergo unprecedented spontaneous racemization and/or epimerization in aprotic solvents, which can be well accounted for by the multistep equilibrations involving planar quinoid intermediates.     

Asymmetric total synthesis of (-)-spirofungin A and (+)-spirofungin B

[chemical reaction: see text]. The stereocontrolled total synthesis of (-)-spirofungin A (1) and (+)-spirofungin B (2a), polyketide-type antibiotics having various antifungal activities, has been achieved employing the Weinreb amide 8, the alkyne 9, and the vinyl boronate 5 readily available from the common intermediate 10. The first synthesis proceeded with a longest linear sequence of 31 steps, affording (-)-1 and (+)-2a in 7.9% and 5.2% overall yields, respectively.     

Ultrafast manipulation of antiferromagnetism of NiO

Photoexcitation of antiferromagnetic NiO leads to ultrafast reorientation of Ni2+ spins due to change of the magnetic anisotropy. Recovery of the magnetic ground state occurs as coherent oscillation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter between hard- and easy-axis states manifesting itself as quantum beating. The coherence time is approximately 1 ns with the beating frequency being determined by the anisotropy energy.     

Hydrophobic scale: a second parameter to elucidating various specific ligand-protein interactions

In the sequence Fourier analysis (SFA) of specific interactions such as those between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs)/FGF receptors (FGFRs), bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)/BMP receptors (BMPRs), or tumor repressor protein p53/mouse double minute 2 homolog (MDM2), the characteristic frequency peak(s) could be observed with the hydrophobic scale for 20 amino acids as well as 4 nucleotides as the physicochemical parameter, but not successfully with the absolute electronegativity scale. This result implies that these two independent scales should be appropriately selected in various specific ligand-protein interactions, though the critical difference has to be determined.     

Compact Almost Kähler Manifolds with Divergence-Free Weyl Conformal Tensor

We prove that a compact almost Kähler manifold satisfying that a certain part of thedivergence W of the Weyl conformal tensor W vanishes isKähler.     

Resonance-enhanced two-photon sum-frequency generation in NiO and KNiF<Subscript>3</Subscript>

Resonance-enhanced sum-frequency generation is introduced as a novel tool for investigation of magnetically ordered compounds. A tunable laser at frequency ₁ is used to excite an intermediate electronic transition resonantly while a second laser at frequency ₂ is used to scan the nonlinear spectrum at ₁+₂. The technique is particularly useful for investigation of centrosymmetric compounds since resonance enhancement at ₁ leads to large nonlinear signals even in the case of weakly allowed nonlinear processes. The technique is demonstrated on antiferromagnetic NiO and KNiF₃ and also shown to be useful for investigation of samples with large thickness or absorption. Catalytic intermolecular Pauson-Khand-type reaction: strong directing effect of pyridylsilyl and pyrimidylsilyl groups and isolation of Ru complexes relevant to catalytic reaction

Some circumstantial evidence for the directing effect of the 2-pyridylsilyl group in the Ru-catalyzed intermolecular Pauson-Khand-type reaction (PKR) of alkenyl(2-pyridyl)silane, alkyne, and carbon monoxide has been provided. Most importantly, we have succeeded in isolating several monometallic Ru complexes relevant to the catalytic reaction: Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complexes and ruthenacyclopentene. While the stoichimetric reaction of the Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complex with an alkyne led to the formation of the corresponding cyclopentenone (PKR product) at 100 degrees C, the ruthenacyclopentene intermediate was quantitatively produced at 50 degrees C. This complex was also converted to a cyclopentenone upon heating at 100 degrees C. Moreover, it was also found that the Ru(vinylsilane)(CO)(3) complex and ruthenacyclopentene serve as catalysts in intermolecular PKR.     

A simplified measurement of hydrated crystal densities of low melting points (low transition points) by solidifications of aqueous solutions

A volume change method for measuring crystal densities is described. It allows the densities of unstable hydrated crystals at room temperature to be determined, by measurements of volume changes during the solidification of aqueous solutions. NaCl x 2H2O, KCl, MgSO4 x 12H2O and K2HPO4 x 6H2O were measured by the method and their densities (SE) are 1.61+/-0.02, 1.99+/-0.05, 1.45+/-0.01 and 1.75+/-0.02 g ml(-1) respectively. Data of NaCl x 2H2O and KCl are in good agreement with the previously reported values.     

The first example of alpha-thiomagnesiums generated from dithioacetal monoxides with Grignard reagent; their properties and some synthetic applications

Dithioacetal monoxides were synthesized from aldehydes and cyclohexanone, and reaction of the dithioacetal monoxides with Grignard reagents was investigated. The dithioacetal monoxide synthesized from alkylaldehyde and 4-chlorobenzenethiol reacted with i-PrMgCl to afford the desired alpha-thiomagnesium in high yield. The generated alpha-thiomagnesium was found to be stable at room temperature and to be useful in organic synthesis. In contrast to this, the dithioacetal monoxides derived from benzaldehyde and cyclohexanone did not give satisfactory results.
